Got a mate who's thinking about getting a console and for the life of me I'm finding it extremely difficult to recommend he get a 360.

Can anyone with a PS3 tell me about it?

Is it quieter than the 360? I assume it must be, the only way you could make a 360 noisier would be to put a bastard outboard motor on it, but I'd like to know.

Can you install games to a hard drive on the PS3?

Is there any kind of region coding on games/DVD player on the PS3? (Is there on the 360??).

Given that the whole PS3 online thing is free, are you stuck on some sort of PS3 network equivalent to the utterly pointless Xbox Live (ooh look, I can buy a new hat for my avatar for 10 quid, that's amazing! - Fuck off) or can you somehow get onto the internet?

Most importantly, can you play avi's/wmv's etc on the PS3 without having to convert them to DVD format? (This is the one useful function on my Xbox).

I have not heard an Xbox, but I presums so. I have only heard my fan a couple of times, and that was during the summer after prolonged use

Not sure what you mean here, but the Net and store are completely seperate. Internet works like the internet usually works... and you can connect bluetooth keyboard/mouse so you dont have to fuck about with the controller. PS3 store sells avatar hats for a tenner (along with a HUGE amount of other stuff - games, demos, previews, videos etc)... you can also rent or buy movies from it. Iplayer has been intergrated, and you can turn the whole system in to a freeview recorder which is ace!

You can also stream movies to it over a wireless network. Azureus is awesome for this - download over bit torrent, drag in to PS3 bit, and it magically pops up on the media server. You can also play from USB Key or recorded DVD.

HOWEVER! The be all and end all is what his mates play on... most of mine have PS3's so I am happy with it, however, most of XDC have Xbox's, so may end up getting one of those to get back in to competitive game play...

Not having an Xbox you might think that I was asking a lot of stupid questions, but it's worth mentioning that you can't get onto the internet on the 360 at all (as far as I know anyway), only the Xbox Live service which you've got to pay through the nose for and it really isn't worth going on it's that poor.

Only reason I can make a case for the 360 at the mo is the back catalogue of games and the fact that it's generally the development platform for a lot of games. But as far as I can see the PS3 has more more exclusives these days and my mate has a decent PC anyway so he'll get a better version of a 360 game on that 9 times out of 10.

At least with a PS3 he's got a choice of games that he won't make it to PC.

I am surprised Tooth and Insane haven't seen this thread - they are massive fanboys of the Xbox. I have barely ever played on one, so really know nothing about its pro's and con's.

The media capabilities alone make the PS3 worth while for me - just make sure he gets a decent surround sound set up too!

I have both, 360 is a gaming console and a shit hot one at that, however it too can stream just as well as the PS3, I've not tried it though, PS3 has a Bluray

You might find the odd exclusive game come out on the latter, GOWIII, Unchartered etc but 360 gets more I'd say, or possibly the same

They all come out on the same unless acctually developed by Msoft/Sony Interactive

Oh and you have to pay for games/themes/avatars on the PS3 like you do with 360, no difference there, although on the 360 you can at least try the game beforehand, woth PS3 its buy or dont.. no Trial game at all, unless its a big game.. and they will be making the online bit chargeable in the near future, pay as you play I hear

Oh and PS3 controller is shit, unless you have girls hands.. 360 you cant argue is the dominant factor there nuff said brah

Nah, not wanting to sound overly negative on the 360. I currently think that if you've got a decent PC then you'd be better off with a PS3. If you haven't the 360 is a better bet.

My mate has a decent PC, so I think he'd be better off with a PS3.
