Having spent the last two nights up until 3am playing BF2, it’s clear I’m addicted to it again, the problem is I’ve become shockingly bad at it. Now I was always slightly behind the curve with this as I missed the first 6 months or so of release, and still haven’t even got all the unlocks, but I used to be at least able to shoot people! The last few nights have, for the most part, shown me up as unable to hit a barn door at 6 yards, and it’s doing my nut in trying to figure out why. First, I normally play medic, so those are the guns I’m most concerned about, though I have the same problem with the assault, and sniper classes, but the main thing I’m wondering is; what the fuck is the trick to aiming in this game?!?!
I’ve had opponents lined up in my sights, I’m lying prone, I’m zoomed in on the opponents body, they’re lying prone or crouched a distance away (i.e. not moving), and I’m firing but not hitting. This happens with all weapons, but particularly frustrating is the L3blahdeblah unlockable weapon which has the steel pointy device in the gun sight, giving the impression it should be a very accurate weapon. Sometimes I kill them in one shot, and I’m very impressed with myself, but most of the time I’m pulling my hair out in frustration as I’m barely even registering hits, they then have time to locate where I’m shooting from (and painfully this sometimes takes them forever, yet I still can’t kill them) and shoot me dead in one burst. I’ve had some joy readjusting what I thought were short bursts of fire, to shorter bursts, and also by using the normal crosshairs at close range, but it really doesn’t make a great deal of difference.
I appreciate I’m rusty, and also that the people I’m playing against have mostly likely been playing the game from release, and are therefore ridiculously good at it by now, but still I should surely be able to pick up kills at a better rate than I am currently. Please please help me discover what the problem is here, and share any other little nuggets of information you may have which made you the player you were back in the day 😉
The BF2 aiming has always been weird. From experience the L85A1 (the pointy metal thing – SUSAT) is best used on single shot mode. doesn’t matter if you are prone or not it will fire and hit roughly where you are aiming. Also since the latest and last patch the hitboxes are alot better, headshots seem to register better and I’ve found people dropping when I’m only taking half arsed pot shots at them. Try using the spec ops guns, they are quite good for headshots 😉
Sounds like you are being a proper spacker though 😆
Heres a tip… pressing caps lock lets you get to the join squad screen.

We did indeed, several times. You seemed to be having problems being heard over TS at the time, as well as clearly not hearing us, but it’s maybe worth your while enabling mic boost within BF2 as for some reason the program likes to mess with microphone settings…in case you haven’t already.
Also speaking of squads, I was trying to send you a squad invite, but I couldn’t find the option to. Can anyone remember how to do it?
And Turks, jump on IRC if you fancy a game, type in my name as you see it to ping me, and I’ll eventually pick up on you being there. If I’m actually playng BF2, or anything, I’ll most likely be on TS at the time, but if not I’ll see your message on IRC when I get back to computer. on the squad screen at the bottom there is a “manage squad” button, click it and it gives a list of players on your team. tick the box next to who you want to invite and click ok. job done.
Yea good games last night, even if I was a bit shit 🙂 Slowly getting back into the way of things though, and the single shot mode for the pointy device medic gun is working a treat, so cheers for that tip Tooth. I just need a bit more practice now, and find a way to throttle the bandwidth my flatmate is using watching fucking iplayer every evening.
I suspect tonight will be a L4D2 night, but in between games, or when I get bored, I’ll be up for more bf2 🙂 Anyone interested jump on IRC and let us know, as I’m sometimes on other TS/vent servers.
Good games last night Turks, and later Paddy, I really am completely hooked on this again. 5 minutes into the first game I found myself on the middle point in Taraba Quarry, trying to figure out where I was going, when I ntoiced a 3 man squad moving in from the east. I didn’t want to give away my position just yet as they were still quite far away, and by the line they’d chosen to take to the flag, they’d clearly not seen me, so I lay in wait a minute or two, then popped up at a medium distance when they were on the flag, and fired off 3 consecutive and quickfire headshots 🙂 That was me satisfied for the rest of the evening, and even a 0.5 kd ratio on Sharqi at one point couldn’t dampen my spirits 🙂
Overall my KD ratio is still pretty shit actually, but there were signs last night of significant improvement at last 🙂
It’s also worth noting at least 7 of us have this setup again now and are likely to be playing regularly over the next few days/weeks, and a few others have expressed an interest. Feel free to join in, if you’re not already, and remember IRC’s the best place to come looking.
