For laughs, Ive been playing Colin MCrae Rally 2 in the office with workmates recently. I’ve never played much in the way of car games before and am surprised to be enjoying this and learning some skillz.

I want advice on choosing a game – preferably with a free demo I can download.

    My requirements:
    -Only interested in multiplay
-None of that ghost car time-trial crap
    -Realistic physics

I’ve heard of Nascar but isn’t that just going round a loop 100 times?
I’ve just looked at rFactor website and it looks a bit Nascar-ish
    Toca 3?
    Others?

What’d be cool is demos/trials which allow multiplay online.

    -Fenix out

I don’t think rFactor is nascar-ish but more of a base game with an assload of mods out their, 1 of the mods being nascar, the rest being any other road racing shampionship you can think of and a fair few that you can’t. I could be wrong though, but after hearing mugs banging on about it for god knows how long that’s the impression I’m getting.

    I say rFactor

That can do just about any race series depending on what the mod makers make. There is a nascar series in the game, but I am not fussed about driving round in circles only reason i ever did that was the make spectacular crashes ๐Ÿ˜›

You can download the game and have access to the BMW F1 car and a tin top car, cant remember which one though. no mp in demo you need to unlock the game by buying a license (รƒฦ’ร†โ€™รƒยขรขโ€šยฌร…ยกรƒฦ’รขโ‚ฌลกรƒโ€šร‚ยฃ25)

Multiplayerwise I would say rfactor has the best net code for handling many players. and the graphics are good.

Well, after posting I downloaded rFactor and played it for a couple of hours.

On the whole, a very impressive game – thing’s have moved on a lot since I last checked the scene. However, there’s nothing to satisfy my morbid desire for pixel carnage and, because only carnage could make me interested in racing, I can’t buy this game.

Playing rFactor contrasted with my memories of the original Nascar game which had crash damage. I can’t remember, however, whether the rest of the physics was up to scratch.

Waiting in line to d/l Nascar SimRacing as I write…

Have remembered my driving game history: –
    1. Revs on the BBC micro
    2. Nascar
    3. Need for Speed 2 Demo
    3. Colin Mcrae Rally 2

Thanks for all the input lol

    I’ve tried demos of: –

    1. Colin MCrae Rally 3 = crashed on both PC’s I tried it on
    2. Nascar SimRacing = too boring
    3. rFactor = not quite right for me
    4. GTR 2 = I’m not sure; the demo settings are too restricted

I saw GT Legends is going cheap in Game shop. Tempted to give that a go with all 90 of it’s olde worlde cars like Cortina Mk 1 and Mini Cooper. Anyone got that?

Hey, maybe there’s a truck game; we can talk on CB radio, good buddy bring it on back.

May be worth trying Sega Rally.

Back in 1995 it was the king of console driving games and despite the graphics by todays standards ebign totally toss, as a game it has still stood the test of time and put’s current generation games to shame with it’s playability.

You can probably pick up a second-hand saturn for fuck all and the game is so common you’ll probably get it free with the saturn. There is a PC version too, but tbh I’ve never tried it and I’d probably prefer the Saturn controller anyway.

There was a Sega rally 2 for Dreamcast around 2000, it practically improved the game in every way imagineable and had a major graphical update, but for some reason I still prefer the courses and the charm of the ancient-looking original…

truck games ain’t really as interesting in some ways because of the nature of a big as heavy truck, means it’s shite to steer and slow to accelerate. But on the other hand, taking a behemoth sideways around corners flicking cars off the road in big Mutha Truckers was quite fun too ๐Ÿ˜›

One of my favourite driving games (more so on multiplayer) was Vigilante 8: 2nd Offence on the Dreamcast. The game on the whole didn’t get amazing press reviews and it was hardly a sales sucess, but a few m8s and that on the go sure did make us chuckle, only wonder why so many people missed out on the chance to appreciate it…

    I think I’ve found what I’m looking for: –

    TOCA Race Driver 3

It kicks ass. Played single player demo, then the multiplay one. It has a different feel to all the others and the crash stuff is great. Last race, I limped along with steering pulling to the left and then before the last straight, I lost a tire (or maybe a wheel lol) and scraped home on three.

Lots of laughing, lots of fun.

Will prolly buy it this week.

I like the game. But the net code is shambolic. That’s the only let down for me. Its a big let down also as once you fed up with the game the multiplayer is the only reason to play.

Oh, it was only the multiplayer that interested me…

I got a lot of CTDs until I dug down and found a Northbridge system-driver update. Even then, I had to turn off a bunch of detail. But it works now. The only netcode joke I’ve noticed on the demo is when in spectator mode, the cars just leap about like they’re all pimped-up.

I had maybe 10 races on games running off players’ own PC’s and it was fine to play.

i went from playing loads of toca to rfactor.

gt legends, gtr and gtr 2 are all based on rfactor.

multiplayer is pretty crap to be honest. toca is better if you only have a gamepad or keyboard as you really need a wheel for rfactor.

As for damage well that is completely down to the race series/mod in how far they take it.

I think the 2 cars ISI made for the Lienz tracks are the most destructable. with bits coming off all over the place.

the PCC 05 mod by GSMF is the opposite where its pretty hard to actually damage the car and is more like NFS.

The Seat Leon 2006 mod is very good for damage and has nice touches such as if you scape a wall your wing mirror gets ripped off! and thinks like punchers.

but its totally down to the modders, and rfactor is built for that. graphics wise i would say rfactor is amongst the best easily.

Also multiplayer is the best ever in rfactor due to it using the correct method of client and server like FPS games introduced.

Downloading the rfactor multiplayer demo now – didn’t realise there was one…

    Netcode is important after all.

The thing about TOCA 3 is that it handles wonderfully on keyboard.

hmm the mp demo wont work. its a tech preview of rfactor from 2004.

there wont be any servers to play on!

only way to play rfactor online is with full version i am afraid.
