I woule like to say Xbox 360. Most games that are good for the Ps3 are also for the Xbox360 excluding a select few. Xbox360 has the best online gaming of any system and has an HD dvd player. Xbox live also includes an online store. There’s more options to customize your system with. Themes, trailers, skins for the system.

ok, reviving an old thread here but i’m looking at getting a console for a bit of gaming but also to stream media to my TV using my soon to be installed NAS 😉

I know most of you guys are on xbox so i’m tempted to go that way to at least have some peeps i know around as and when i want to play a game or 3 but i’m told the PS3 is far better for streaming content.

What are the front ends like for media streaming ? Do they show album art of playing MP3’s for example ? Do they have any issues when it comes to streaming heavy duty content like blu ray movies ? Are they limited with regards to the file types they can play ?

What are the pros and cons of each unit ?

    cheers all.

It’s true the PS3 is the better for streaming (I think) although Blurays in MKV format which is what I do, I’ve not tried my Xbox so cant comment although it streams well from what I’ve heard, just easier to use PS3 for that I say.. I’ll try it later for you if you like to see how it fairs. I use PS3 media server from my PC, it detects laptop and 360, I’ll try it to see how it looks

I much prefer the 360 for gaming though, to me its far superior based on controller for a start, its just more comfortable to my sized hands and theres more of us on it, yes you have to pay yearly sub but you do now to get the best or same on the PS3, plus you can trial games on 360 pre buying, you cant on PS3 (I’m not talking game demos, more Marketplace stuff

Tuff decision which is why I got both 🙂

    I use

What’s the annual subscription for xbox ?

What do you use to covert your blurays into MKV’s and what’s the quality like ? Does it retain all the menu info and if so does it work ok ?

I won’t be streaming from a pc or laptop but from a readynas duo which i’ve bought but not yet set up, i’m assuming it should stream directly from that to the console with no problems!

Is it possible to access websites on the consoles such as youtube, picassa etc ? Failing that what about internet radio either directly or through a 3rd party app ?

    Cheers for the info, if i think of anything else i want to know i’ll post it later on! ;

Youtube works on the PS3 (and iplayer)… not sure about picassa.

Even I can stream films on the PS3 (but prefer to do over usb stick).

I bought my PS3 second hand off Avforums.com for £110 and upgraded the HD to 640GB for an extra £50 (did it myself – go me!). Xbox360 Arcade can be bought for under £100.

    Buy both!

What do you use? Oh and try streaming .MKV (Bluray)? I tired it before with Clash Of The Titans, It was pants, kept stopping and wasnt in 5.1 either 🙁

    My summary after testing films

PS3 for Streaming if you want Bluray quality

360 if you want superior gaming experience

    🙂

I have a modded Xbox 360 which to be honest is virtually free and I STILL DON’T play it. PC FTW, haven’t had to upgrade my pc in nearly 2 and a bit years and I still use it all the time.

All I use the xbox for is to stream media.

That might be a good point Mike, don’t think I’ve streamed that file type yet? I’ll have to download something and then give it a go.

cheers for the feedback gents. I’m leaning more towards the xbox for gaming and may just get a standalone media streamer.

Aye space, the 360 wont support Bluray (Sony) files hence why it doesnt really work

I bought Xbox 360 3 months ago but tbh i still play way more games on the PC and i’d probably wouldnt bother getting a console again, definetly think about if you really want/ need it for other than games ie video streaming etc. I was a little disapointed in the graphics but then it is based on 5+ year old PC archetecture and it was shocking piss poor without a HDMI cable.

Bonus… press the On button and go, no fucking about.
