Well I did a faitr bit of research into this when buying my new processor – a lot of the data seems to suggest that quad cores are actually slower than equivelent dual cores because they dont work very efficiently except in specialised tasks. Alan Wake is highly unusual in that it is being optimised for 4 cores – but its a gamble as to how many other games will do that in the future.
Personally i reckon if you spent the money on a top of the range dual core you would be better off… and buy a quad core in a year or two if it looks like the technical issues with doing multi core processing are ironed out. But I’m no expert.
or get a quad core and overclock it to dual core speeds 🙂 best of both worlds
