That was actually set to Easy Mode last night on “Seize the Base”, but WTF how strong were the enemy! Hordes of ’em over-running our spawn within 10 minutes.

tried this online last night, what a pile of crap! first off I have NEVER seen a less intuitive game, spawning as a seagull, I had to be talked through how to actually spawn by Dazzer (I think) and then sometimes it will respawn you normally, other times it will respawn you as a seagull and you have to disconnect and reconnect to play again.

The point of it is that respawning is against the spirit of the game. Being able to respawn is a fiddle of the game system.

WAs respawned in the middle of a river at one point, without a gun, had to run half a mile to get a gun, and got shot whilst I was picking one up.

When you respawned in the river, what you actually did was a body-snatch, stealing the body of an AI soldier. I have a theory about how the spawnability works in the game, and I’ll start another thread on it, if I still remember. You can’t play this game thinking about frags and respawns: you have to think about self-preservation first and then execution of a plan. It’s all about staying alive. When 2-4 of you have infiltrated a target zone and everything’s starting to rock ‘n’ roll, it’s genuinely sad when one of the group gets killed.

There’s a funny story behind why he was in the water . You’ll laugh when you hear it. I was the squad-leader at the start of that game and I ordered the whole squad of AI’s to run backwards away from the spawn and take cover. The actual destination I gave them was kind of on a steep slope into the water… One of the cool things about this game is that soldiers will drop pieces of kit if they think they’re too heavy to swim or think they’re about to drown. After the guy had been there for 10+ minutes, he obviously felt the need to ditch his gear.

No offence, but I have never seen a game more in need of a massive amount of work on it’s interface, the only advantage/change over OpFlash is the browser for online play.

This game is a definite shock to the system, and I would have liked to have been more helpful to you but I’ve lost my voice (re: Ventrilo) and I was the only one who knew wtf about everything.

The teamwork last night was atrocious, for several reasons. First there was the patch which made all the AI into uber-soldiers. Same mission, same AI spawns, but with additional AI on top of them. Such different behaviours and results! Everyone who was used to the mission was getting blown away. Vehicles on normally safe routes, 700+ metres (up to 1.6km!) away from the target were getting destroyed by amazing converging fire and there seemed to be long-range foot patrols all over the map.

Second was the poor communication which was my fault. Between losing my voice and trying to get Line to understand what me, Wolf, Dazzer and ViperGra had arranged, it fell apart. Line was in hilarious, murderous rage against the AI and was a bit blinkered with respect to teamwork. It was very lolly nevertheless. Me and Line managed to get a couple of decent rounds in, in uber-cautious mode. It was frightening!

Third was the number of noobs on the server. ViperGra, you should be ashamed of yourself 😉 with those suicidal drive-up-to-the-enemy’s-front-door-in-a-truck-and-loook-at-my-clan-badge plans that you fooled Dazzer into coming along on. I tried to warn you but my voice…. I remember you shouting out about how loud it all was seconds before your inevitable slaughter. So that was you and Dazzer fucked.

The number of times I just kicked-back and watched your heroic last moments (that’s last moments witht he clock only just begun ticking from spawn :P). Laughter prolly made my throat worse. It certainly isn’t better today. Wolf I saw you get taken out by a sniper as you left the spawn in a truck on the road. Sorry I couldn’t help ya!

Wolf, basically about the interface, I’d say who cares? In a game with the team all playing together, it’s often the case that the admin will restart when a couple of ppl have died.

The game is not the menu interface. It’s about treating the objectives with major respect and finding a way to get to them without dying. It’s about taking the right amount of time to make a decision and enact the plan. It’s extremely rewarding if you give yourself a little time to understand the logic of the game.

Plz give it another go. It really is the business!

As i’ve said to others on vent im struggling to see what improvements there are over the original OFP besides improved textures and reskinned models (which you have to drop down to normal/low settings anyway to get a playable fps 🙄 ). The openness/realism still provides the ‘wow’ factor but all the old annoyances are still there. Nothing seems to have been done to improve the command interface which was clunky to say the least. Lots of it just seems to have been lifted wholesale from ofp (which came out 6 years ago ffs) – the same dodgy animations, the same bad soundstage (which makes it difficult to judge sources and distances). The AI isn’t really intelligent – its just overly accurate which makes the single player experience frustrating.

It seems this game has existed in a vacuum over the past 6 years – and as a result appears not to have evolved or taken advantage of the massive improvements in processing power/graphics/sound hardware. I understand the troubled history of this follow up to OFP but it seems such a shame that more couldnt be made of it.

And before anyway moans about me being a BF fanboy – OFP was THE only game i played for about 2 years. It was just awesome for its time which explains the high expectations i had for this. I just hope there’s a OFP 2 out there in development which will be a more worthy successor.

Having said all that i am keen to try out the MP with the rest of you. 😉

that only thing i’m very frustrated about is the AI, makes teamwork impossible in single player, i haven’t yet played multiplayer yet, so can’t comment.

I wish the AI in your team on SP mode were as bright as the AI in enemy.. i’ve had to restart a map about 20gazillion times because the driver of a stryker is a right fucking pleb.. he thinks driving around the map for an hour is fun, when I restarted it, he drove pretty much the way he should have.. I think the patch has included a TomTom to aid this! 😀

also the numbwits keep getting lost, “Where are you, Where are you” .. “I;m stood infront of you ya fookin nobber!”

    jebus…

anyhoos I’ll still give it a chance if/when you guys are on.. I’ve only seen Gra on recently 😀

GRAW2 is out so am gonna have a dabble on that 😀

P.s Wipers.. wouldnt high end GFX mean more trouble for yourself, I mean if you have to drop your GFX mode in this to get a decent FPS, I fear you’d be playing a first gen Gameboy advance game if the GFX were better :/

Guys I had this problem with the first one, but honestly when’s it crap it’s crap but when it’s good it’s feckin brilliant.
Yes it’s hard great hopefully when all the nobbers who are around 4 or 5 cant figure it out they will bugger off. I mean yesterday ~I was with Fenix and I could’nt walk I asked why not? It’s because I was injured and had to be healed at the medic tent, feckin brillant.
Yes it’s a pain in the arse right now but give it 6 months and it should be like the first and really good.
I must admit I was pissed off( not like me) yesterday because I spent 2 hours playing and still haven’t got a clue what was going on or what I was supposed to be doing but then again I am from Birmingham so no suprises there.

EDIT ….Gotta say thx to Fenix for all the help, much appreciated cheers mate

Way I see it you’ve got 2 options for multiplayer.

First is to play the Sector Control map – which is like the BF games. Spawn, run to flag, die, respawn. Easy to get into and dying doesn’t matter so much.

Other is to accept the fact that every mission bar maybe 2 or 3 on the entire DVD (including campaign missions, multiplayer missions and single missions) vary from being utter gash to just a bit pony and therefore do what absolutely everyone who got anything out of ofp did – make up your own missions which are better. If you all go on ts it should be easy enough for 4 or 5 of you to get on someones comp and for them to host a decently designed co-op mission.

This game was on a hiding to nothing to start with. It was gonna be criticised for being just a flash OFP with better graphics and bigger draw distance if they did it as they have. If they’d have made it “next gen” or whatever hell else they call it these days and done it differently people would have said it was crap because it was nothing like OFP. I suppose you’ve got to ask yourself if you wanted the former and be happy with it, or the latter and just unintall the thing.

    Shucks, 11thSignal 😳 :).

SOIA comes in, revealing more of his mighty intellect to us mortals. The Sector Control (look for ‘SC’) is pretty cool and the mishmakers have made some excellent scenarios. Find a good game (how? lol) and it’s a joy. It’s BF-friendly.

Apart from a couple of real corkers, it should be custom missions all the way. Which is what it’s all about, right?

I liked Wipers’ comments which nearly made me want to install OFP until everything calms down :D.

I’m playing around with a little dedicated server of my own this evening. Check out ‘=XDC= Limited Test #1 v1.05’. Catch me on Ventrilo if I have my headphones on my ears. It’s running on my flatemate’s PC. i don’t know if I’m being cautious or optimistic by setting it to 6 players. Right after this post, I’m going to alter the available maps (including custom ones (god knows if eternity will be long enough for anyone to d/l them but I’ll try to keep it to smaller missions…). Uber-admin password is the one that =XDC= admins should know. The command ‘#login ‘ does the trick.

[vent]The game appaerntly crashes my network so I have been banned from playing it by the Nazi housemate who thinks Hitler was alright but a bit soft. Of course I could probably fix the problem with the router but her and her boyf have decided that they are in charge of the internet connection and have decided not to igive out the bastard password and so I have to get one of them to type it in every time I need it. Of course the router is locked in their room and they are utter cunts about everything, but what can you expect from fervent UKIP supporters.[/vent]

Housemates sound as xenophobic about games as they do about people. Moreover, it sounds like a case for the legitimate use of a key-logger! 😉

If I knew much about routers, I’d be interested to know how ArmA messes with it.

I’m thinking that the router is fucked, and that every time I try and reconnect either ArmA or Ventrilo scans some ports (which brings up a security warning on the evil bitches computer) and as a result I am no longer allowed to play ArmA. Although I have no idea why ArmA disconnects more than BF2142, which is just laggy as hell. It wouldn’t suprise me if they were limiting the amount of bandwith I have and disconnect me randomly for shits and giggles. Also fully expecting to find a key logger on my computer at some point.

After tonight’s little experiment with running a dedicated server, I think that most servers out there simply aren’t specced high enough to cope with the load they take on.

Had a nice session with 6 of us on my server. No CTD’s, no freaky server behaviour; just plenty of laughs and action. Of course, it was impossible to stop Dazzer driving around the maps like he was in an ice-cream van. Don’t get him wrong though: under that suicidal exterior beats the heart of a true bullet-magnet .

If I’m running the server, I’ll be in Ventrilo advertising the fact next to my name. Tomorrow, I’m going to try running wth 8, 9 or 10 player slots. I’m not leaving it on 24/7 or anything, and if my flatmate wants her PC, then it can’t run then, either.

There’s another thing I did which may have kept my client up (I do get lots of crashes normally). It was installing the latest Windows drivers from http://www.openal.org – I saw it mentioned in the ArmA troubleshooting wiki. OpenAL isn’t somethng I’ve ever encountered before but ArmA uses it, apparently.

Right, it’s bedtime for this bonzo, so g’night.
