I don’t think seatbelt laws had been passed when I took my test (1988-89)

When I passed my test I certainly got the instructor’s attention. We were driving along and he’s waffling on about banging his clipboard on the dash to signify an emergency stop. Just as he was about to do it an old granny stepped out in the road!. Fookin stupid instructor hit the windscreen as he took his seatbelt of so he could bash the keyboard.
I still passed though 😉
