ParticipantI guess the inequality comes on when the women are considered to be posessions of the men, rather than partners of them.

ParticipantIntel have been trying to do that for years, ever since the first hardware accelerators came along. I did a lot of business in the mid 90’s with people like them and Real3D (who designed what was then Intel’s branded accelerator chip, the i740 series), as well as other chip manufacturers who are no longer around. The original technology roadmap for the i740 was that its descendants would end up being part of the CPU.
It has always been a dream of the CPU vendors to have a “system on a chip”. But the problem with graphics in general, and 3D in particular, is that the *type* of things you can do (as opposed to sheer performance) has been changing so rapidly. Nobody wants to buy a machine whose capabilites are so tied in with the CPU.
Now it could be that as the graphics technology change is slowing, and the whole field maturing slightly, that the CPU guys feel it is time that they can get enough graphics power on the chip that this problem goes a way a bit.

ParticipantWow! Just as a matter of interest, what is all this data and is there any chance some could be archived to tape?
Of course, if its none of my business, just tell me 🙂

ParticipantI’ve just figured out what the problem is:

ParticipantI doubt it is extending the paging file, since once that is done it is done.
I.e. say Windows has made 1Gb page file by default. You run an app that requires more than this, so XP goes off and extends it. Typically it will add on a few hundred Mb extra, making it, say, 1.5Gb. This size is now there to stay – if you restart XP it will have a 1.5Gb page file – it is not dynamic each time you restart.
This behaviour answers Doc’s question as to why it is not done as standard. It grows automatically to a size that reflects the typical usage of the machine.

ParticipantIt sounds like something is waking up and grabbin your processor/hard disk periodically. Do you have a desktop search engine installed such as Google or Copernic? I have found Yahoo a particularly bad offender in causing periodic problems – shame, it was a good local search engine.
Disable any indexing services you have running.
Have a look at this thread. It’s more about ping spikes than what you talk about, but its a start.

Sorry – in a rush so this is a bit short. I’ll try and add more detail later.

LOL.
As a slight aside, when I was managing software engineers I often wished for a mechanism I could apply to a PC to prevent copy & paste – i.s. disable Ctrl_V or its variants. Copying source code from one location to another is such a huge source of bugs and inefficiency its untrue. If you have to type the same code twice, it’s wrong.
