I was shown a picture of a man and woman in Africa walking down the road. The woman has a bloody great bundle of sticks on her back and is trudging along, her back bent under the strain. Her husband walks along side with only his walking stick.

Somebody said the guy was an oppressor for making his wife do the heavy work, but someone else said that it was for her own safety, because wild animals wouldn’t attack her. Is that right or is it BS? (the wild animals bit at least).

    Shit.

I’ve got to come up with another reason to make Nathalie carry the shopping home. Looks like my ‘dangerous squirrels’ excuse isn’t going to hold water much longer.

Cheers for the info Lord Von Phartsbury

just say that its so you are free to defend her should anyone or anything attack. becaues if you were laden down with shopping then she could be ravaged and you would be powerless to help unless you drop the shopping and break the contents :p

Good point Hippo. I reckon that’ll be my next excuse.

in most tribal communities the men and women have specific roles to play.
Women’s duties include collectig firewood or building materials or harvesting crops. The men’s include hunting wild animals, construction and general defence of the tribe. I doubt they see it as inequality 😉

I guess the inequality comes on when the women are considered to be posessions of the men, rather than partners of them.

In Uganda, the typical married (peasant) womans day lasts 16 or so hours… including cooking, cleaning, washing, collecting water, fishing etc… the mans is much shorter – often spent socialising in the afternoons… and sleeping around!

Its just the way it is.
