KeymasterA second hand PC – £250 – £300
First of all, only the gfx card I’m buying is second hand, and that’s only because I can’t be bothered to wait for a new one to appear at the same price again, which will happen within a few days. I hesitated yesterday and missed one on ebay brand new for less money than I paid for the one I got today, and I also missed that I could’ve got one on overclockers today for about a fiver more than I paid. The components I quoted earlier, in response to your first post, were all new as well.
No contest! Its each to their own! I like consoles because they are more social, easier to use the way I want to use it, and less intense
Of course it’s each to their own, for example in my own experience PC’s have been much the more socialable platform, but I’ll accept more people have a console in their living room than a PC and so they’re used more often socially. Generally speaking I find console games, which don’t have some novelty WII type factor, just as unsociable as most PC games, and I try to avoid anything computer related when out somewhere or have people round. There are certain types of games which lend themselves better to social situations, but even these are mostly best played with 4 or less people in the room. Champ Man, GTA, trackmania, poker, are a few PC examples from my uni days which were popular over a few smokes.
I completely disagree that PC games are more intense than console games, except maybe FPS which are more forgiving on consoles, though even then intensity’s relative to what you’re used to. Maybe it’s just the wrong word you chose, but it’s not an intense experience I’m after when it comes to games, it’s a challenge, and one problem I have with certain genres on consoles is that it’s like looking back 5 -10 years to what PC games were once like in terms of AI. If I’d started off playing consoles these days, I’d probably love them, and laugh at the PC geeks with their word processing prowess, but in starting with PC’s I’ve seen the best computers have to offer, and can’t take a step down from it. For these reasons I have always wondered how PC gamers here have drifted over to consoles, but having said that, the only people who’ve not drifted back to PC’s for FPS, have cited cost as the main barrier.
the original post was mentioning that PCs are the same price as consoles and this simply isnt true
In the OP I said that my outlay on this was in the region of what I’d expect to spend on a console. My outlay is going to be at most £210 but hopefully under 200 if I can find a buyer for anything other than my GFX card, which is more or less sold already. Regardless of that though, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think even £250 is an unrealistic figure for the cost of a console, and I’m sure that a console would be recommended to anyone with that kind of budget.
Take the XBox arcade for example –
£100 for the console fine, but what else are you probably going to need?
– Will it work wirelessly if you’ve not run a cable directly into it? Nope, and I believe that’ll cost you £70 to fix, although correct me if I’m wrong.– Will it be any good socially? Nope, only one controller, which will cost £30-40 to fix.
That’s you already up to £200, and you’ve not even bought any games, each of which you can buy £10-20 cheaper on the PC, so any cost advantage is lost in 2 or 3 purchases.
Given that the Xbox Arcade is a budget model, the cost argument isn’t looking too strong here.
I don’t know enough about the PS3 to comment on figures for second hand consoles, but even at £110 you’re 6-10 game purchases away from catching up with my current outlay, and I’m sure that at £110 it wouldn’t come with many controllers.

Keymasterwoohoo I can start paying attention to threads like this again 🙂
For me personally, I think I’ll wait until I’ve got used to BC2 before worrying about a beta for BF3, but would be interested in hearing some feedback if anyone’s on it.

KeymasterMonitor working again, and it’s better than before 🙂

KeymasterI’m not saying that consoles are evil, or that they don’t have their audience, I’m saying that a PC can be tailored to fit almost any budget and still be capable of wiping the floor with a console. Something Matt proved with this post. There is no need to remortgauge your house to purchase that.
This.
There’s no point in arguing all the other stuff re consoles, because when it comes down to it, there’s no contest. The number one thing people complain about on these forums regarding PC’s is the cost, and I’m simply pointing out it doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s also not some bargain basement crap I’m getting here, I’m expecting to score quite well running some benchmarks when it’s up and running.

KeymasterWell on the £50 second hand option, that sounds ridiculously cheap, but it’s not really the point. You’ve already stated you paid around £285 for the PS3 at one point, and that’s within the normal budget range of someone seeking a console. It’s certainly cheaper to find stuff second hand, however the point I’m making re the PC cost is that it’s easy to build a good machine within the same budget range.
Couple of other points to make, but got a train to catch….

KeymasterHow much was the HD, PSU, Case, Cables?
Nothing, because they’re recycled from my old setup.
I actually edited out the line I wrote in the OP regarding this, as it’s really a moot point. Everyone here has most likely still got a PC with each of the above, however if you needed to fork out for them:
Case – £20 ebay
PSU – £10-20 ebay, £50 overclockers
HD – £25-30 per 500gb sata drive, from numerous sources. Possible to get cheaper I’m sure.
Cables – not sure if you’d need to buy any, but dirt cheap if required.ebay prices quoted after very quick scan, and from top rated sellers only.

KeymasterYea I bought BC2 around prerelease, but have never been able to get more than 30 frames a second running it, and normally it plays at around 15 fps.
My monitor’s repaired, so I’ll be back online tonight, but I’ll probably not have the components for this upgrade until next week. Unless either of you want to learn TF2, a game will have to wait until then.

Keymaster😆 looking good Max

KeymasterAn off the cuff remark from someone at one of 5 electronic stores I visited on Sunday, directed me to the a store just around the corner from me, which specialises in monitor repairs. This store is so tiny I’d never even noticed it, walking past each day for 2 years, so counting myself quite lucky I was directed to it. They offered me a free quote, and while I’m sure they must be making a large profit, they identified a faulty power supply in my monitor and are replacing it today for £35. Given that’s quite a saving on the 150-200 I was preparing to fork out for a new one, I’m wondering whether I can stretch to a full pc upgrade (est £250)…hmmm

KeymasterOh and Doc, you’ll not believe this, but this problem occured shortly after reinstalling COH 🙁 Still got about an hours worth of patching to do mind you.

KeymasterActually wtf has the theme got to do with the way a game plays, and why it’s such an issue for people? Guns shoot just as straight nowadays as they did in WW2, and anything vehicle related doesn’t apply to this game. If I’m diving for cover in COD, I’m feeling exactly the same thing I’d feel in BF1942, i.e. how the fuck am I going to get out of this and kill that bastard shooting at me. The only difference between the games is in the options I have to kill said bastard, as 1942 was a bit more forgiving in terms of giving you a health bar, and having less accurate weapons. That’s nothing to do with the era the game’s set in, it’s all down to the balance in the game’s build.
/rant over 🙂

KeymasterThe theme doesn’t bother me because to be honest it feels cool as fuck in single player. Multiplayer has never been anything special though, as it heavily favours a lone wolf style of play, and of course the lack of dedicated server support for MW2 and subsequent invasion of cheating bastards completely killed it for me. I’ve heard they have server support now though, and would be interested in getting this if multiplayer is considered any good?

KeymasterI think we tried to get all the Xdc-er’s in a corp but it just went uggggghhhh
Aye, the problem with starting a corp for XDC at this stage is that it would be a relegation of sorts for most of us considering our positions within our current corps. It’s also a lot of work that requires a CEO with more than just casual gaming time on their hands, unless we were happy with a mediocre standard of pvp etc, which we wouldn’t be.
Corp management is one side of the game I’ve not bothered with though, so if I ever find myself with time for eve again, I will come back and start one for XDC. That ambition is probably the only thing preventing me from selling my characters at the moment, but in truth I can’t see myself ever having the motivation to build it up to a level where other XDCer’s would actually want to join it. Stranger things have happened though.
Alzir
KeymasterHe’s been on eve Wet, where we really should start an XDC corp, except none of us can be arsed. Max, get COH loaded up, and message us on steam some night. You could even jump on ts with me and doc for some tf2 action 🙂
