Yeah, any clues to identifying who a beacon belongs to gratefully received lol.
If the policy is going to be to discourage camping enemy beacons because of its similarity to regular spawn-camping, then there should be a server motd to that effect. No problemo.
If you get close to your own beacon it should appear as a green icon on the HUD.
Agreed about the message. I’ll see about fixing the server message that appears when you load maps.
um….are we going to have some discussion about this or has ‘spawn beacons are off limits even when they’re near enemy flags’ suddenly become the policy?
December 11, 2006 at 2:38 pm #41369RonathonParticipantHmmm in two minds about this.
Yes it’s a bit lame to camp a becon – but you’d have to be a sucker for punishment to spawn there again if you know it’s being camped.
If you know it’s being camped, spawn elsewhere and call in a nice orbital strike. That’ll scatter the enemy and if not will most likely destroy your becon anyway.
I don’t think there needs to be any rules about camping becons tbh.

No its not ‘policy’ yet and its still open for discussion. I’m not sure what you mean though when you say ‘spawn beacons are off limits’. Imo all enemy spawn beacons should be destroyed quickly if found and not farmed for cheap easy kills. The spawn radius round a beacon is small so it would be quite easy to cover it with an APC/walker/bandit and rack up 10+ kills before the squad tires and stops spawning on it.
I’d just be surprised if we allow this because we’ve never condoned any sort of camping on XDC servers. Zigzags situation was unique – he couldnt see the beacon and the attacking squad misinterpreted the situation. But to say its okay to stand near a beacon and shoot people as they spawn when you could easily kill the beacon is something I’d have a lot of trouble with. Having said that I will live with it if the majority decide otherwise. Time for a poll?
I still need to edit the server welcome message though. Its empty at the mo.

What did you do with the drop crates and tunnels in BFv ?

anyway…
I just think beacons are different to other spawn points purely because you can plant them behind enemy lines or anywhere you like without first securing the area. What happens if you’re guarding a flag and someone plants a beacon on the other side of the flag area? Do you leave your cunning defensive position to go and kill the beacon or do you sit there and wait for gormless squaddies to repeatedly spawn there and mow them down? What happens if someone plants a beacon somewhere that’s difficult or impossible to get to? are you allowed to shoot people dropping in there, or do you just have to back off and lose your flag?
If you plant a spawn beacon in an unsecured, ‘hot’ area you deserve everything you get, especially if you repeatedly spawn there.

No, I mean what was the server policy with regards to camping them.
December 11, 2006 at 4:14 pm #41376xdczigzagParticipantHaving thought about it over the last few days I reckon there’s no need to have rules about it as they would be far to complicated, with lots of clauses and sub clauses to try and cover every eventuality.
basically I see it this way….
Spawn camping is lame.
Mobile spawn camping is both lame and perfectly reasonable depending on the circumstances.
You can’t legislate for all eventualities.
Respawning at a compromised mobile spawn is understandable if you want to stop the guy finding it and destroying it.
Shooting people when they land is understandable if you can’t find the bloody spawn point (but are trying).
Respawning at compromised spawn is stupid unless armed with rocket launcher…know however that you may well be wiped out trying to land and hit the camper.
People do “hide” the mobile spawns as much as possible, which makes perfect sense. You can’t then reasonably complain however when the enemy is having trouble finding it.
Basically, mobile spawns are very useful, which makes them equally dangerous to the enemy. The enemy will try to wipe out this threat…the enemy will have to be near enough to wipe out the threat meaning he will be in a position to camp. What makes mobile spawns effective also makes them dangerous…Once compromised a mobile spawn becomes a very dangerous place to land…Accept the temporary nature of the spawn point and move on…
As defender, you have the right to kill all threats in an attempt to locate and destroy the beacon…locating and destroying the beacon should be your priority…This is the grey area which can never be legislated for, as a dumb fecker like me can have problems finding the beacon. Know that any delay will likely cause you to be called a snivelling spawn camper and learn to live with it…Your conscience should be clear…ignore the slings and arrows.
As attacker, accept that sometimes it is just plain dumb to keep respawning at a compromised beacon. Try to resist the urge to scream “camper”, and respawn elsewhere, making a note to find the guys own spawn and give him a taste of his own medicine at some later point in the game…preferably with a knife to the ribs.
Amen
December 11, 2006 at 5:05 pm #41377WipersParticipantLooks like you’ve answered you own question zig! 😀
I agree with everything you’ve said, including the bit about not needing a rule. We didn’t with capable flag raping on BF2 – it was just a judgement call when it happened and up to the admin. You and Dei are right – there are times when the beacon is inaccessible or it would be suicide for the defender to take it out. Thats fair. I just didnt want to see people sitting round a beacon picking off people for kill points as they spawned.

We did not have one, it was a bit lame to do, but never lasted long enough to affect a game. Anyway, how tf do you think I racked up all those sniper kills in NAM and BF42. I spawn camped, but from a fucking long way off. Just because I could hit a pubic hair accross half the map did not mean I did not camp, I did it a long way off.
As for the spawn beacon, its a legit target IMHO, as long as you will try kill it off and not camp it
December 11, 2006 at 6:16 pm #41379Mr.FenixParticipantYou guys are so wise 🙂
Those spawn crates in nam were funny. They were really hard to kill so you’d end up with loads of guys surrounding it killing spawners who got in the way of the destruction.
