ParticipantSo it’s that time of year again! Where’s your money going?
I’ve downloaded both the FIFA and PES demo’s on the 360 and was wondering what you guys think?
Now I’ve always been a FIFA man myself since way back in 2001 on the PC (further back still on the Mega Drive.) Always a sucker for graphics and presentation which FIFAs have had in abundance. Then I picked up the 360 and had a bash at PES 2008. I quite liked the 2008 version but many people say it wasn’t much of an update on the one before?
FIFA DEMO
Obviously the graphics are first class. I’d be quite shocked if all of a sudden EA managed to FUBUR that part of it. But what I can’t understand is how slow it is! Seriously, I’ve seen paint dry quicker than the speed the players move at! Everything else looks all fine and such but it’s just so slow to be unplayable. Am I alone in this thinking? I just don’t get it as FIFA 2008 on the PC was quick enough.PES DEMO
From the demo (and having only played it for a few minutes just now), there doesn’t seem to be all that much difference from the 2008 360 version? But that said, it’s a lot quicker than FIFA. And they’ve thankfully made it even quicker by reducing the time taken when waiting for set-pieces and the like. The graphics look touched up, shame there’s no commentary on the demo 🙁 For these reasons alone I guess it’s going to be a PES season for me.Incidentally, do any of you guys still play PES 2008? Would be a laff to have a match.

Participanthumm well I’ve always been a PES man myself, FIFA (although I have’nt played it for a while always seemed to be a one man running all the way up the pitch and scoring affair)
Though saying that the last couple of PES games I have bought for the Xbox have been really dissapointing for me, So I’m in a quandry, Do I bother with PES again and be pissed off or do I bite the bullet and go for FIFA???
Then again I don’t have much time for anything anymore apart from a little 2142 so I might not bother with either!!

ParticipantAfter the horrific game that was pes2008 on the PC, I ended up another year playing PES 6 and was looking forward to Fifa and PES offerings.
Downloaded the Fifa09 PC demo, liked it enough to buy the full game, played almost all of saturday on it and doubt I’ll pick it up again. Why ? Same reason as all the other fifa’s before, it doesn’t feel like football, it’s a pure arcade game. There’s no strategy to your play, just pick a few quick players and good dribblers, walk around in the box with nobody challenging you and score at will. Again a game where learning how to do fancy trick combinations is going to win you a match.I downloaded PES2009 PC demo yesterday, gave it a crack and after a rushed demo game, this is the clear winner for me. The graphics are as good if not better than Fifa, but gameplay immediately feels familiar in that I can play a game of football again, it feels as good as pes6 and I’m sure with the full game all the new bits and pieces will come out and it’ll be a great game
I know the games differ on console, but clear winner for me is PES, although I do love Fifa09’s presentation and menu setup, PES’s seems like it was designed by a 10yr old

ParticipantPES2009 on the 360 for me, but then PES is always better than FIFA in my eyes.
FIFA is just so damn arcadey, annoys the hell out of me. Take a look in the options in FIFA and there all kinds of assists on, what’s the point in these really? FIFA09 is ok, but its still more show than actual football.
PES2009 looks like a nice update to 2008, it is a bit quicker but also alot slicker I found. Also the new Legends mode looks awesome.

ParticipantThere are actually 3 games here, because FIFA 09 on the PC/PS2 is a totally different build to the 360/PS3 versions.
But in short, PES is a fast, simpllistic arcade version of football.
FIFA on the PC is ok but not nothing to write home about.
FIFA09 on the 360 is the slower, deeper, more “sim” version of football.
If you’ve got time to sink into the game then you should get FIFA (on the 360/PS3 only though). If you want a football game where you can just pick up and play occasionally then you should consider PES, but you’ll still have to live with the pitch bending cheating that the CPU indulges in when it decides it wants to score.

Some things never change !
And I hear your point bout fifa09 on PC being different to xbox360, apparently EA can’t get next gen Fifa09 on PC’s cause consoles are more powerful. When did Darling start working for EA.
EA = lazy lying bunch of female genitalia’s, or just lazy console programmers who can’t port properly to PCOctober 11, 2008 at 4:51 pm #69451XDCErratic-Space

Why is that? Now I’ve got Fifa ’08 (and all the ones prior going bac to 2004 I think?) on the PC which I’ve always loved but I was quite shocked by just how slow it is on the 360. It doesn’t really make any sense to me how come they’ve slowed it down so much? I like sim games but football is a fast paced game, that’s part of the enjoyment!
Having played both demo’s a fair bit now I’m going with PES which I’ll pick up in the next few days.

KeymasterBut in short, PES is a fast, simpllistic arcade version of football.
Never thought I’d see that said about a PES game 😯 Compared to fifa I thought it was always the more sim version of football, but then I’ve not played much of either of them since leaving uni. Have things changed that much in recent versions?

ParticipantTotally agree with SOIA.. used to love PES, ever since early console days (or ISS (Jleague) .. but now a total FIFA fan.. its much better these days. Not played PES since 2006 version.. not even played Demo of 2008.. because fifa is just good
Oh and if you think its slow, change options to Fast, or even Faster.. soon speeds up 🙂
never played a footy game on a PC, never will tbh.. 360 with your mates online is the bollox, yet to try the 10 mates verses mode, infact I’m yet to play it at all since *cough* demo.. my lounge is bare and no TV in it anymore.. still decorating etc

Nope.
FIFA is still the arcade version of football, it’s how they design it after all (for the masses). I just love the way the ball curves like ALL the time like players are unable to kick a ball straight 👿

ParticipantWas going to contemplate your comment there, until I noticed you played 16hours of warhammer, which makes you a nerd and you probably like WOW too, and EVE, and therefore the conclusion is nerds no shit about football 🙂 hehe
I like the way you cant score easily, makes for a more exciting game, in the days of old, you could score in FIFA by just looking at the goal from outside your window without the console and TV being powered on I might add, the old diagonal swerve goal.. yawn, nowadays its more difficult, to shoot in a straight line, I normally take me hands off the thumbstick.. its unpredictable, and i like it 🙂

Don’t think you can do this on the demo can you? Is it much faster on the quicker settings then? As that’s my only real issue if I could get around this I’d probably be buying FIFA. Might have to see then if I can take find somewhere that will let me take it back if I don’t like it (or at least have a tester in store).

I would be hurt, except its sort of true. Well apart from the not knowing about football part 😛
The FIFA vs PES argument has raged for millions of years, FIFA has improved hugely but its still more ‘show’ than actual football.
Mind you, nothing wrong with owning both like I will be. I just know that PES will get alot more time.

Yeah, they swapped places last year on that front, though this was down to FIFA totally changing. PES didn’t change, Pes hasn’t moved forward noticeably since about 2002 though, so no surprises there.
PES is the same game it was on the PS2, only with fancier graphics. At least you know what you’re getting I suppose.
I’m with Insane on this – it was ISS/PES all the way for me up until last year but FIFA is just a better game now. And what’s with all that shite commentary they have on these things these days? I’m still waiting for them to bring back Alan John-sonn from ISS Deluxe. He’s the best commentator there has ever been on a football game.

ParticipantPlayed Fifa09 on a PS3 at a friends over the weekend, still got console thumb today. It’s actually pretty good, much much better than the PC version.
BUT, can’t help but feel the game still has the old fifa feeling, no need to play football, get the ball to Ronaldo, do a few twists and tricks on the right hand stick and trick your way from midfield to one-on-one with the goalie and score. After the 20th time, it gets pretty boring ( and frustrating, ended up with 7 men in one game due to frustration tackles )Weirdest thing, I reckon if I had a keyboard to play on on the PS3 I would whip my friend 6-0, I just can’t get the hang of console controllers and having to do most controls with my thumbs, maybe all those rugby/cricket thumb sprains counting against me now
