I’m hoping someone can help me out.
I’ve had BF2 running fine for a while. Yesterday I decided to uninstall BF1942, DC, BFV Vietnam, & Sky-by-broadband to clear up my disk a bit. But when I now try to play BF2, whenever I click on a server to join it, I just get an immediate crash to desktop.
Anyone got any suggestions on what to do to fix this, outside of a complete reinstall of BF2 + SF + patches + AF? I really want to avoid that if I can.
In theory uninstalling the earlier games should not have made any difference, but I swear that is the only thing I have done between BF2 working fine and it not.
My gut feeling is that it is something to do with Punkbuster, as part of the BFV uninstall asked to remove “Punkbuster for BFV”. I don’t know how to just install PB to test this out. But that is just a theory. It just seems to me that PB probably invades the system a bit more than a regular game in order to prevent hacking. Perhaps the uninstall of PB for BFV has killed part of the PB for BF2?
Any hints gratefully recieved.
June 27, 2006 at 9:59 pm #28341Captain_ChronicParticipantI get it every now and then , but so far have connected to the server on the second attempt.
June 28, 2006 at 7:08 am #28342LensmanParticipantIt’s every time for me, no matter how many times I try. 🙁
June 28, 2006 at 7:59 am #28343XDCiNSANEParticipantHave you tried reinstalling Red Orchestra?
😆
June 28, 2006 at 8:19 am #28344RonathonParticipantTry pressing Escape instead of Join Game.
If that doesn’t work there are some post over at totalbf2 about this.
June 28, 2006 at 8:31 am #28345WipersParticipantCrashing shortly after joining a server is a classic punkbuster problem. Probably means PB is out of date on your system and for some reason it can’t update automatically. Go to
http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php
follow the instructions and download pbsetup.exe to do a manual update.
btw – you may need to run it a couple of times before it works!

Ffs are you on commission or something? You’ll be moving down to Devon next… 😉
June 28, 2006 at 9:10 am #28346LensmanParticipantThanks guys. Tried the PB thing – no joy. Currently working my way through this post:-
http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75427
from TotalBF2. I have to wait a while to fetch the full 1.3 patch, however.
June 28, 2006 at 9:56 am #28347WipersParticipantReinstalling the entire game is probably the next step tbh. Here’s what i’d do….
Uninstall it, making sure you whack your bf2 graphics cache while you’re at it.. (if it hasn’t already been removed by the uninstall process)
Documents and Settings[username]My DocumentsBattlefield 2modsbf2cache (i think)
Delete the folders in there, then run a defrag to tidy up your disk.
Reinstall everything, run another defrag, then create a local game so the graphics optimization process runs populating the cache directory again. Run a final defrag.
Try and join an online game.
June 28, 2006 at 11:36 am #28348sebgrosParticipanttry regcleaner before reinstall to be sure to clear the registry of bf/pb keys…
make sure to save the folder called profile in my documents/BF2 so that you dont have to configure your keyboard and sensitivity stuffs….June 28, 2006 at 1:41 pm #28349XDCiNSANEParticipantFfs are you on commission or something? You’ll be moving down to Devon next…

he’s got a point 😉
June 28, 2006 at 5:52 pm #28351LensmanParticipantStill not sorted this 🙁
It now looks like the uninstalls I did have screwed BF2 uninstall info – I cannot either uninstall BF2 or even reapply the 1.3 patch. If I try to do either, then I get a message saying unable to locate BF2 install location.
This is really crap. Uninstalling other apps should not affect anything else. Bloody crappy installation programmers – I used to do this for a living and it is really not hard. Grrrrrr 😡
June 28, 2006 at 7:06 pm #28352nOmParticipantlook around the net and find out what registrey files you need to remove…ie bf2 shitz…then reinstall
June 28, 2006 at 9:23 pm #28353XDC_WolfParticipantHKEY_LOCAL MACHINESOFTWAREElectronic ArtsEA gamesBattlefield 2
June 29, 2006 at 5:57 pm #28354LensmanParticipantUp and running again, now, although I still have not reinstalled SF.
Can someone remind me of the trick to stop the videos playing on startup?
