Anyone have a projector? any tips and tricks in getting one?

I am interested in the Optoma HD700X – I have a fucking huge lounge (with 3 lazy boys in it – Oh Yes!) and want to make it the ultimate man pad!

    Give me tips bitches!

Buy one! And I hope this is helpful… http://www.projectorcentral.com/

    I have a Panasonic AE900, wicked for films. 720p.

Have a look on pixmania, I got mine years ago from there, was good price.

That Optoma is DLP, so unless the technology has advanced alot since I last looked make sure you get a live viewing on the DLP projectors as your eyes may spaz out on them – some sort of rainbow effect to do with the colour wheels that DLPs use and some people can notice it making it painful to watch.

Go to Tottenham Court road, there are loads of shops there with viewing rooms. Pretend you are interested, arrange to see some projectors in action (hopefully you like Fifth Element) – this is what I did.

Used to use my PJ for 360 games, but find a large LCD better and less of a killer on the eyes if you are like me and play for 5 hours non-stop. Mainly use it for moviews from LoveFilm, about 4 a week

Weird – I’m looking for one too!

Tooth is right re DLP – make sure you dont see rainbows before you buy (it is a very idiosyncratic thing… you might not see rainbows but your mate will… so it’s a gamble.)

LCD projectors are a safer bet – but need regular cleaning of filters and some people think the picture isn’t as good.

I am looking at this one…

Those guys seem to be one of the better retailers around.

Just had a look at your projector – it sounds gash.

There is very little to be gained from going for a projector at this price range I understand (better off with a good LCD TV.)

You need to spend about 800 quid…. this gets good reviews on the forums and this place has a nice price on it….

    Get a 1080p projector. PS3, bluray, amazing.

When I bought my 720p projector, the 1080p ones were £3000+

Now they are only £1200, that’s near what I paid for my 720p 😛

Dont believe the hype, not much difference (If any) between 720p and 1080p, I use 720p on xbox on 50″ Pioneer TV, cant tell the difference at all, mind you most games are 720p anyhoos

Films wise, cant tell the difference at all, although I do run at 1080p because I can

Yea but if you are running a 150″ screen you will surely notice it a lot more!

Depends what you want to do with it.

I wanted good quality because I was going to watch lots of films.

If you are hooking it up to a console to drink beer and play games with your friends then it will be fine.

But remember, once you have one you will want to go further and get a better one to improve an already amazing experience, so you might as well blow all you can afford into a pretty good PJ right away.

Was on tcr today, so had a look in some places, but they kept trying to upsell me to £1k+ models. Had a look at one in a viewing room and it was pretty cool, but just way above my budget.

I am concerned about the layout of the room too – theres a massive lamp shade on the main light which would stop us from being able to use a ceiling mount, and I think a wall mount will look messy. Will take some photos of the room when I get a chance and see if we can come up with something that would work.

not sure how home friendly they are but casio have just released the 1st non-lamp projector.. as you will know the expence of a projector is in the lamps which need replacing every couple of years and can set you back 300 quid a time.. the new casio projectors use a combo of laser and led light and reckon they are good for 15 years…

    might be worth a look

I think it still has a lamp – but it only needs replaced after 20000 hours. Its not full Hidef and may be more prone to rainbows than other machines…

After 6 months of fucking about, I am aiming to get one for my birthday in September… Pretty set on The Optoma HD600X for about £460

it seems to get some pretty decent reviews, and is 3D ready… something I will never use, but may help sell it at the end of its life!

Just wondering how you guys have set yours up? Thinking I may just plonk on a table next to sofa to start off with as having it screwed on to the ceiling looks pretty ugly…

Doc/Tooth – can you post some pics of your set up?

    Cheers

It is totally amazing! So glad I didnt listen to Doc and buy something for £1k more! (I really wouldnt be able to tell the difference!)

We manage to project an image circa 120′ last night, crystal clarity… loved it! Just need to get a 8-10 meter HDMI cable and it will be all systems go!

Anyone know if I should believe the hype in regards to cables of that size? Will more money equal better image, or should I go for this?
