Badges do, however, have the advantage of making you play or at least try all the classes.
Now where’s my Brasso….
June 5, 2006 at 9:38 am #26675sickofitallParticipantThe day they release a game where your level/badges/score gets you access to decent quality bongo sites on the interweb then that’s the day bollocks like this will matter to me.
Either that or beer vouchers in the post, of course. Or maybe both, but that’s just a pipe dream “Got my snioper badge last night and celebrated it with an Old Pec and a wank, marvellous stuff” etc…
June 5, 2006 at 9:59 am #26676XDCNeonSamuraiParticipantUh oh. This has now become a semi-serious debate…
I agree that these stats make people act like ‘tards, but so do people in other games that don’t have stats. I think the problem with BF2 is the way that they issue you points and what you have to do to get them.
e.g. Chopper whores and how everybody wants to be their co-pilot. People rake up massive numbers of kills raping bases in choppers, and that ain’t much fun for the rest of us.
In my opinion they should make the way you get ranks, badges and points slightly more opaque. I know I have to shoot x number of the enemy to get x badge, so that’s what I play for. But if instead to get my basic infantry badge I needed 5 kills, 1 flag grab, 1 flag defend etc then it becomes slightly less obvious. Plus if you take away the kill count during the game it makes it harder to know how you’re doing.
Plus they should have other points awarded for better team play. Here are a few ideas:
Following orders:
You capture/defend a flag as requested by the commander – 1 extra point.
You blow up/repair a target as requested by the commander – 1 extra point.
Teamwork:
51% of your team are present during capture/defence of a flag – 1 extra point.
End of game player has no TK or team vehicle damage – 1 extra point
Basically they need to reduce the awards for getting kills or and increase them for not playing like a ‘tard.

Same thing, especially as your stats can be viewed and there’s a leaderboard of sorts. Get rid of that and you’ll reduce the kudos of having a high score.
But at the moment the highest rewards go to people who can kill the most, which skews the game.

I’m not a stat whore, but if being rewarded for my online comittment to EAs trough of swill gets me bigger and better guns then, hey, where do I plug my cockness in?

I’d have to disagree on that I’m afraid.
If I’d have spent more time running about as a medic and not bothered to put in the time and effort to get to vetran on the other classes I’d imagine that I’d be 2-3 ranks higher now.

read original post…….and the words ‘stat WHORE’
Done and done… no wiser though??? Id call a few of XDC stat whores… but wouldnt call them cocks.
Anyway – this whole stats thing is interesting. it definately has led to some crap aspects of play… but lets think back to the old days of BF. There was NO incentive to play as medic or engineer (apart from medics who went the class to heal themselves.) Put down the stats as you want… but when I play BF2 medics try and heal me!!! support guys try to give me ammo! People try and join squads so they get mobile spawns and score more points!
I reckon people look back on BF42 with rose tinted glasses. We were lucky in XDC to have a good group of guys who would occasionally go out of their way to help others (nom as engineer and Vic as medic spring immediately to mind) despite the fact they would often be at the bottom of leader boards.
Like it or not EAs blunt instrument of stats linked to in game actions has actually made a difference to the amount of team pl;ay on servers? No??
June 5, 2006 at 10:57 am #26682RonathonParticipantThink you’re right Doc in an unfortunate way. In that in this day and age to get the average player to play as a team you have to reward them.
Me, I just like the aspect of helping others and played mostly as engy/medic in BF42 too. (play support classes in WoW too)
Although playing as an engy in BF2 is far less rewarding points wise than a medic. I mean in the time it takes to drop a full load of medpacks and revive half your team, I’ve fixed one tank and probably got nothing for it apart from normaly being run over or killed by tank/AT/TOW. But it’s enough of a reward to watch that tank trundle off and cut a scythe through the enemy, oh and taking out full APC/Transports with mines is nice 🙂
June 5, 2006 at 11:06 am #26683von smallhousenParticipantremembers fondly Bocage, being hit by a tankshell and sent flying getting out the medi-kit and healing myself in mid air landing at the right angle so as not to die just loose some life, healing again, running into the sawmill and nading it back to times before the war, healing myself some more, MP40’ing some dudes face off that had just spawned. etc etc. capping the flag, killing another guy, healing myself, pistol! healing gun healing.
just like in real ww2.

Think you might be on to a winner here… just put some “Im a soldier and I drink diet coke” adverts in at opportune moments, and you will have instant revenue for that sort of thing!
If only it was Vietnam… you could airdrop in some poooooooonetang!!

Doesn’t look like that to me:
In an attempt to bring some sanity back to the world of Internet gaming, I decided to start a clan myself, but in XDC the emphasis would be on having a good time, rather than on serious gameplay. We only invite someone to join if we like them, and if they’re good fun to have around. We have no ranks, so no one is ordered to do anything, and the only condition of membership is that you’re not a wanker. How good someone is at the games we play isn’t even a consideration when they’re asked to join, so us actually being good is purely coincidental 😉
In XDC we take games they way they should be taken as, i.e. just a bit of fun. We play for the entertainment of a challenge, but never get so carried away that we can’t have a laugh with the people we’re playing against. Nobody in XDC is expected to give up any free time towards the game; we can do what we want, when we want. That means we don’t have any bullshit like ‘meetings’, and we certainly don’t care how often members appear online. So basically, XDC gives us the opportunity to play in a team of friends when we want, but at the same time not letting the game become our life.
Now surely that all depends on what you define as fun?
If I’m having fun playing as X class whilst working towards X medal/badge and still helping my team and making their game enjoyable, then what’s the issue?
I don’t see any comparison with what’s on the front page, personaly I’m not a ‘all waking hours’ type and have never been in any clans of a serious nature.
I don’t think any of XDC currently playing has lost sight of what XDC stands for from what I’ve seen and heard on the servers. Everyone still appears to be playing for the fun and love of the game.
The stats and medals are just a side show to the actual game really.
