The router is about a meter from my pc, and have never had an issue with the setup before, but it might be a clash with the new tech.

    will know next week!

Cheers for the heads up – I actually saved everything for a recent re install, so no big job.

Ive heard bad things about OCz SSD’s, can these be ignored? and I have a SATA II Mobo… will this limit my speed?

    Cheers

There we some reported issues with the OCZ Agility 3 SSD’s but there has been a firmware update since, which seems to has sorted it for most people. I have the OCZ Vertex 4 and I can tell you I’ve had no issues and it’s exceedingly quick.

With regards to SATA II Board limiting your speed, you can get SATA II SSD’s and compared to a mechanical HDD, you will notice a huge performace increase. If you wanted to, you could still buy a SATA III SSD and futureproof yourself if you decide to get a newer mobo/cpu later on, but it will only run a quick as the SATA II Ports on your Mobo. Again, compared to a mechnical drive it will be much faster.

So… the reason for me being a bit quiet at the moment is due to my HD failing! (Cheers Lammie!) On the plus side, they are sending me an upgrade as a replacement (Agility 3 or something) – so thanks Lammie again!

Currently writing essays on my backup drive which is on the verge of failing… hopefully not for too much longer.

Store the essays on the ssd, as well.

I save directly to dropbox, and create a back up on my flashdrive every hour – I think that has me covered.

I thought you bought an SSD? has that failed or you old mechnical one?

My hdd is on the verge of death so will need to replace that too. On a bit of a budget so considering this

I’ve had a 1.5tb for 3 years and am only up to a third full and it has 3 prior installations of windows on it, so 1tb should be fine. Does anyone have any experience with these drives? Is this the one to get in my price range (up to £70)?

Also, I would like to have Windows and BF3 on the SATA and then all my documents etc on the hdd – is there a way to set this up, or do I have to manually remap all the folders?

    Cheers

Oh and also… I have a free copy of windows 7. How can I install in from digital form on to my new drives? Can I do it via an external HD caddy?

I have been reading up on how to automatically assing downloads to my HDD rather than my SSD, but am largely getting results in line with “it cant be done”. What do you chaps with both SSD’s and HDD’s do regarding download and software management?

    Cheers

I dont get it – what cant be done?

You download stuff to wherever you like – just set it in options in your internet browser.

Whenever you install a piece of software never let it install automatically – tell it to install on your Hard drive.

Im sure you know this stuff – maybe you are asking a different question?

I was just wondering whether it can be done by default… but I think the answers are either “yes, but it might fuck up your system” or “no – you, you should just manually change the drive letter”.

I think I am going to go with the latter.

The system is now soooooooooo fast! I have a completely clean install, and just waiting for the girlfriend to fuck it up!

Would it help to create her own user without admin rights etc?

I’ve manually set fe. firefox to dl stuff to my hdd and same to other progs that I use to dl stuff…

I’ve installed all the programs needed to ssd then taken a backup on it just to be secure dunno why as I tend to do a fresh install on windows atleast once a year 8)

oh and get on duty! see you on the field of battle. 🙄

I have created her own profile and set an admin password so she will have to run it past me if she tries to install anything. We had an enormous argument early on in our relationship about me not trusting her (or women in general) on my computer… 3 months later – it was fucked!
