I had similar problems, thought it was just me before I read this. I probably spent more time trying to join a game than I did actually playing one last night.
Origin is the biggest pile of of shite.
LensmanParticipantIt’s not just that I’m tight in not buying Karkand – it’s mainly that I only just got BF3. Wanted to just jump in and play that for a bit before worrying about expansion packs. I was already pissed off with a 4Gb download needed as part of the DVD install, and really didn’t want to arse about waiting for more stuff to stream down.
It’s only £12, so I’ll probably grab it when I can be bothered. I get little enough time to play as it is, so may as well get set up so when I can play I at least up my chances of doing so with a decent mob.
LensmanParticipantTried to join, but I don’t have Karkand pack yet.
Got slaughtered on the SAS server instead.
LensmanParticipantI should be on later too, hopefully, so you guys will have some cannon fodder.
Or, if I’m on Max’s side I’ll do what I did last time: follow him around, shoot what he shoots at, and hope to pick up the kill by firing second…
LensmanParticipantMy biggest beef is the complete nightmare of installation and the crapness of getting onto a game.
The 2xDVD install took long enough, and then launched automatically to get a 3.8Gb update. No choice. No chance of at least playing for a few minutes, getting things set up, and waiting until late at night before doing the update. Oh no, just leap right in and take all fucking evening to install what is effectively a third missing DVD. I went to bed and left it going.
And then when it is finally done, bloody Origin refuses to run, and you get a meaningless error message that even Google can’t help with. After much buggering about, I eventually sussed that you had to run that as administrator – what kind of half arsed shite software is that which is so shoddily written it can’t even run a simple sign on process without needing admin rights to my PC?
Then you hit ‘Play’, and expect the sodding game to start. Does it? Does it bollocks. Instead it launches a web browser. Or at least tries to. Looks like it was untested with Chrome, as it only launches half the time, if that. And when you finally get it, then you use a shitty web interface to do everything that you used to be able to do from within the game. And only after downloading a plugin or two, just to clutter up your until then nice clean lean-and-mean Chrome install.
Utter tosh. I really lost my rag with it.
However, when, after several attempts, I finally got into a game, I was pretty impressed. But still can’t believe the hassle involved in getting started – 24 hours from first disk insert to 1st successful connection to a game.

Lensman!!! where the hell you been? Welcome back to the fold 🙂
Once BF2142 passed out of popular play, I’ve not really done much gaming. Don’t have an Xbox or PS3, so not much around for a bit of casual multiplayer killing. Real-life also been busy – young son, change of jobs, yada yada. I’ve lurked here occasionally just to keep up to date, but once I picked up BF3 a couple of days ago I thought I would jump back in properly & say hi. It’s a lame attempt at reliving my youth 🙂
Gotta be said, my shooting skills are rusty as hell, so if you see me on the server, choose the opposite side if you want to make some easy kills. I am utterly wank right now.
Now, off to install Teamspeak…

Yeah, baby, I’m back! BF3 has returned me to gaming.
It’s been a few years, can I still stick XDC in front of my tag?
LensmanParticipantI’m still around. Go through spells of playing BF2142 – normally on squadplay server (forget name, but a search of squad should get there).
But in truth, very little time for playing games. Real life is a bitch at times….
LensmanParticipantHell of a shame. Hell of a player.
LensmanParticipantMany congratulations Pharty.

now I’m annoying myself again trying to remember who wrote those damn lensman books again, and what the story was again!
EE “Doc” Smith was the chap. Usual story of good vs evil – 2 bunches of super beings with mental powers, one lot helping the good guys, the others your stereotypical bad guys. A good yarn, but it’s got to have been over 20 years since I read them. I’m almost afraid to read them again in case they tun out to be a pile of crap after all this time.
And Silvers – harsh, but true mate 😉
LensmanParticipantHairdresser’s car, if ever I saw one. Particularly in that colour 🙂
LensmanParticipantI neither live nor work in London, so don’t really give a flying fuck. Pissed off with all the media focus on this, simply because they are all based in London too. If it was the Mayor of Manchester there wouldn’t be 10% of the fuss. Feckin’ shandy drinkers….
Saying that, Boris rocks!
