What do you think of that article?

It is interesting seeing the reactions on battleface to that article, where the usual naysayers feel obliged to vent their spleen.

I think that you have to remember that when BF2 was being developed, they were only developing it for the PC. That was never going to happen with BF3 so we have (by necessity) an attempt to find a happy medium between the nirvanna that was full-scale BF2 and the immediate action that console players expect.

Generally they seem to have pulled it off and BF3 is a pretty incredible game and incredible experience, however it does have some flaws.
    I would list these as:
Disconnects – the single biggest problem most players experience is the random disconnects from EA online that plague the online game.
Maps – Some maps are clearly aimed at specific game modes or sizes and they aren’t always a happy fit elsewhere.
Weapon Unlocks – my personal bugbear (as stated elsewhere) is the fact that the only way to unlock weapon and vehicle attachments is to get kills with them.

My biggest beef is the complete nightmare of installation and the crapness of getting onto a game.

The 2xDVD install took long enough, and then launched automatically to get a 3.8Gb update. No choice. No chance of at least playing for a few minutes, getting things set up, and waiting until late at night before doing the update. Oh no, just leap right in and take all fucking evening to install what is effectively a third missing DVD. I went to bed and left it going.

And then when it is finally done, bloody Origin refuses to run, and you get a meaningless error message that even Google can’t help with. After much buggering about, I eventually sussed that you had to run that as administrator – what kind of half arsed shite software is that which is so shoddily written it can’t even run a simple sign on process without needing admin rights to my PC?

Then you hit ‘Play’, and expect the sodding game to start. Does it? Does it bollocks. Instead it launches a web browser. Or at least tries to. Looks like it was untested with Chrome, as it only launches half the time, if that. And when you finally get it, then you use a shitty web interface to do everything that you used to be able to do from within the game. And only after downloading a plugin or two, just to clutter up your until then nice clean lean-and-mean Chrome install.

Utter tosh. I really lost my rag with it.

However, when, after several attempts, I finally got into a game, I was pretty impressed. But still can’t believe the hassle involved in getting started – 24 hours from first disk insert to 1st successful connection to a game.

that was an incredibly poor post mortem, dont get me wrong i know what goes into industry post mortems and a lot of it they wouldnt be willing to talk about. however the complete lack of any sort of issues that occurred during development were mentioned and there were a shed load.

i love the game, but it could have been so much more had they not used the same design system for the consoles for the pc. a lot of things were a step back from bf2, lack of commander, lack of being able to edit setting outside of being in game. i really like the battlelog process and can see a lot more games using a similar system in the future but it does need a little more thought into how it functions.

Yeah but BF2 wasnt the finished article, think it took 5 patches.

    All in good time 😉

That’s true max, but the core gameplay wasn’t altered. They aren’t going to change the flag layout on the maps for example or add commander. They will add tweaks and hangs weapon/vehicle stats but nothing core gamePlay wise

ahhh Max ,at least EA still have your devoted loyalty.

What about something as simple as getting squads right in the squad teamplay modes. It’s beggers belief that they can’t even get tis right.

Fair enough, it’s a small matter, but it completely makes the whole squad mode redundant if you can’t join a squad. It’s this kind of thing that makes me realise, at the end of the day, EA/Dice/whoever just couldn’t give a monkey’s chuff.

    The Good, Bad n’ Ugly

    The Good –

    Gorgeous, well thought out maps.
    Amazin attention to details graphicaly
Sound design is spot on (first thing I really noticed in the Beta as being top notch)
    Team play rewarded well.
Progression and learning curve steep enough to keep away most goons (see “the bad”)
Almost limitless scop for expansion (I’d love to see some BFBC2 Vietnam maps using this engine)
    Lovely knife animation

    The Bad..

Squad problem in Squad Rush/Deathmatch. Not a fucking brain tickler to fix I imagine.
Jet learning curve is far far too steep unless playing from day one.
Tanks gun is way underpowered. You ever seen a 120mm Abrahams shell? I have. If it hits you, your sticky jam.
    Heli’s way overpowered against tanks.
Recon class is important, but not reflected in scoring, I think higher points for spot assists.
Flashlights are the gayest thing since Dale Winton and should have been nerfed from Beta.
Battlelog. Origin. and EA online are the work of the devil.
Softcore mode is really too soft.
Mortars should teamkill even in softcore.

    The Ugly..

    Johnny Spunker and his claymores
    MADMAX’s “red light of death”
    TeamSpeak at 2:30am

I agree with a lot of what you said Maniac. The flashlights have been reduced in brightness but how that got past even the alpha is beyond me.
I believe that the weapon damage in the beta was higher – it certainly seemed to be more effective than the retail version.

I also agree that the “post mortem” managed to avoid asking any vaguely contentious questions or (less forgiveable) to challenge any of the self-congratulatory comments that Bach gave.

Don’t get me wrong, I think overall BF3 is a fantastic and highly impressive game but there were (and still are) a lot of fairly extraordinary issues with it as well.

Still, as Max pointed out before, compared to the release issues with BC2 (and even BF2), BF3 was a lot better.

Give me my Commander role back, that chick saying “luv you long time before you die GI” and the huge open BF 1942 maps
