…. not to forget the mods coming out for BF2 like Forgotten Hope or BG:Frontlines (advertise 😉 )
Forgotten Hope – yawn…..it’s so many months late it has completely missed the boat. The same is true of any BF2 mod now – there may be a handful of fanatics players, but that will be it.
I predict that FH will soon make an announcement that it is porting to the BF2142 engine, and there’ll be another 18 months of waiting for nothing.
Anyway, I think some people are getting a bit too religious on the question of to get BF2142/RO/Quake/the-next-game-to-be-hyped-by-anybody. All of these are simply something you play £20-£30 on for a few hours entertainment. That’s a few trips to the cinema or a couple of nights down the pub. It’s really not that big a deal.

ParticipantI’m not ashamed to admit I like crosshairs. I’m a crap shot at the best of times and need all the help I can get.
But having said that I still enjoyed the RO demo, But that had nothing to do with the presence or otherwise of crosshairs. It’s simply not that important to me.
With 2142 I like the squads. I don’t like the weapon names (see thread elsewhere) but I guess I’ll get used to them. I like the Titan mode, but find it frustrating that many people ignore Titan defense. I guess that will come in time, and is what will help make the teamplay aspects of this game work.
But I think the Titans are too easy to take down. They are also exactly the same designs, and so I think Titan combat will get plain boring.
The walkers are OK, and I like it that they are not uber-machines – a tank can slug it out with them with a reasonable chance of victory.
I think the red diamonds make it too easy to spot the enemy, and make a mockery out of trying to find a sneaky hiding place. That’s the one thing I think EA have got very wrong in this game.
I like the electronic disruptor weapons – it means you have to team up with somebody to take advantage of the temporary weakness of the enemy. It also makes for some interesting decisions when you are flying a plane and get hit by one of these – do you bail, or hope the effect wears off before you crash?
I like the graphics – it’s come on boat loads since the beta.
I also like the potential of the kit choices – it’s not something really seen in the demo, but was a part of the beta and made for some great variations. One thing you can do with the demo is to trade-off speed and stamina against armour. Try selecting Customise when choosing your role, and turning off the extra armour option. You can run farther and faster jump higher, with the slight downside that a mosquito bite will knock a chunk off your health 🙂

ParticipantI’ll buy it too.
It’s a shame I don’t work for EA anymore – I would have got it free :(. Still, £20 from PCWorld sounds reasonable.

ParticipantI don’t know if this will help, but you can have multiple soldier names associated with your EA login account. So you can try just creating a new soldier name and hope it has not gone yet.
For example, my EA DL name is “Lensman1942”. When I logged into BF2 with that I created a soldier called just “Lensman”. When I play, I have the option of adding the clan tags of =XDC=. The ‘=’ can be used for clan tags, but not for names themselves. Don’t know why – maybe it’s an attempt to get rid of those tits who go by names like “a$3%%^*sqrgut!@@~”.
When the game starts, just choose which soldier name you want to play as.
BTW, I didn’t go for the Vet thing either – couldn’t make the bastard thing work.

ParticipantI agree with what Wipers said.
The one thing that really gets me is the weapon names. I have no idea weather a “Lensman killed by XXX [KY-3142]” means I was shot by an infantry guy, a sniper, a tank, a Titan turret, or some bender with a jar of KY Jelly.

ParticipantI can’t believe our entire offensive strike force is just 60 aircraft strong.
Jesus – I remember when the Tornadoes first arrived we actually had over 300 of the things.
Many years ago, when joining the RAF was a serious career option, I use to know the strength of the whole service. I find it relly sad how years of defense cuts have completely decimated air force – more so that an all out attack by the Eastern Bloc ever would have done.

ParticipantMy God – you’re all desperate for a shag aren’t you!

ParticipantI found a couple of links that may help:
http://bf2.fun-o-matic.org/index.php/Bandwidth_Requirements
http://www.bfnation.net/bf2/sysreq/
They donlt tell you how to measure it, merely state what the requirements are. Could be a good starting point though.
