here’s an idea ? Don’t try to publish half arsed releases every year, instead how about a longer development time and the full weight of resources behind a particular title in a series (BF3 ? )…..???
Nicely said WET.
“If gamers still want to have a high amount of good quality titles year in and year out, there needs to be alternate revenue streams”
No there doesn’t. Alternate revenue streams? My arse.
They’re doing it because they can, and because they want more money. Incidentally I think these guys have something to do with it:
http://www.massiveincorporated.com/
Here’s what some ‘gamerz’ had to say about the ingame advertising which has been pioneered by Massive:
GAMER REACTION
Massive has served over eleven million game sessions, and the gamer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
Extensive research conducted by Massive IncorporatedSM and play testing amongst gamers concluded that over 90% of gamers do not mind advertising in video games.
The following feedback was taken directly from our Publisher Partners’ Web sites. Gamers care about their games – and the advertising in them.
“I love the idea of having actual advertisements in a game instead of fake, made-up companies. I’ve always wondered why more games didn’t try to do this.â€ÂÂÂ
“I would like seeing a Coke machine, or a Pepsi machine, or (in this case) one that reads Diet Sprite. That’s what it looks like in real life.â€ÂÂÂ
“I think the ads are cool as long as they make sense…the soda machine looks awesome.â€ÂÂÂ
“I think the in-game advertising initiative is brilliant. I play quite often and find the billboards enhance the reality of the game, are completely unobtrusive and dynamic.â€ÂÂÂ
“An ingame campaign of this sort will appeal to the 18-34 male demographic which has been a traditionally hard market segment to monopolise. Erm… Wicked.”
Alright, I made the last quote up, but you get the idea. Brand marketing departments are literally creaming themselves over this idea of advertising in games, mainly because people like us (XDC, 1stBW, 7DR, 256, etc.) don’t watch much TV and aren’t easily swayed by advertising. Ever wondered why so many adverts and TV shows pander to women? It’s because they’re watching more TV than men. We’re more likely to buy a DVD (or download it) of the TV show or movie that we like, than sit through it on the box.
That means we’re not seeing the adverts for male mosturiser lotions or whichever razor has the most blades and (shock horror) making up our own minds as to what we should buy. Even worse, we actually read reviews of the products we’re interested in before buying 😯
However, what’s the benefit to us gamers? If it means that BF2142 retails at £25 rather than £35, then I’ll be for it but if there’s no noticeable difference with the advertising (other than lag) then I shall be displeased.

Having a sixth finger must be very useful for Medimax!
Nice find there Mugworth and if it is true then well said to the Aussie PM. Those crazy Aussies don’t mince their words, and a prime example of this is Old Phart.
But mocking fellow XDC’ers aside for a moment, this has all been brewing for the past 20 years, and what started as a trickle of critiscm has become a flash flood. People are just saying what they’ve been thinking for years, after political correctness has been stifling free speech to protect minorities.
70’s and 80’s weren’t a great time for being a minority in the UK, so programs to intergrate immigrants into our society were a good idea. To a large extent they have worked and that’s great, mainly because we’ve all met each other half way. The people of the UK have changed and don’t have the same views regarding race that we had 50 years ago.
The trouble is now that we’ve had diversity, political correctness and understanding others rammed down our throats so much that we all accept it to one degree or another, so that when a section of our society decide that they are above such behaviour we start pointing fingers.

I dunno about the whole pricing for Windows…I mean on the one hand games are often £20-£30 so I can see an OS being double the price because it does at least double as much. I dunno, I mean you might as well argue MS make so much money that by rights they should give their software away for free these days. I doubt we’d have all these Ipods and fancy MACs kicking about quite so much without the MS monster bounding on?
Well, with software all you’re really doing is paying for the license to use it. I could understand if they released it with manuals and hardware as a bundle and it came to £90, but how many millions of copies have they sold? If you’re just selling a CD ROM and a pamplet then the cost of those is next to nothing, so all you’re really paying for is the right to use their software. Basically they’re looking at about 90% profit per sale.
The bastards.

Add a security patch? I daren’t think where he’d insert the disk.

ParticipantIt is. Gone will be the days that I can try and convince old boilers that XDC is in fact a division of MI5 (without having a wife to explain my actions to). Actually, is there still going to be an XDC get together on the 11th of November, when Dropkick is back in town?
XDCNeonSamurai
ParticipantWell,
I’ll be having my wedding rehearsal (pah!) and then going for something to eat.
So I doubt I’ll be able to play much at all, let alone Battlefield 2142.
Please can one of you act like you feel sorry for me?

Fuck Bill Gates!!!
Good luck ‘sane. His house is so heavily protected you couldn’t get within 200 yards of him, let alone have sex with him. However I think if you genuinely threatened him with such an act he might lower the price of XP 😉

Yeah I agree with Max *except he’s paying far too much hehe* .. infact.. fook me Spunker.. you could buy us all a legit copy you fooking scrooge!
All that money and sellable weed plant and he wont shell out for a hassle free copy of XP :/ jebus you could give Montana a run for his money! 🙂
shame on you!!
I dont love Bill.. I just love hasslefree 🙂
Hmm…
I’ve worked for these muppets FAST as well as these jokers FACT and paying £90 for XP is an insult.
Sure, there’s a lot of development in an OS, but they can’t justify that price and nobody does anything about it because they’re too scared of Microsoft. In fact the only people who seem to genuinely stick up two fingers at Mr Gates are the people who use his software illegally.
If the government want ‘a PC in every home’ then they should do something about the outrageous price fixing that goes on (£200 for Microsoft Office?)
I’d gladly go out and buy XP if it cost half the money. I go out and buy decent PC games because I know if I don’t and people pirate their games they’ll go bust, but microsoft make more than enough from charging unjustified amounts for their software from firms who have to be using legal copies. Games manufacturers don’t have that luxury.
Bah! Anyway, the we’re conned out of money in this country is a joke anyway.

hehe turks, my doctor has me on beta blockers at the moment, I could have sneaked you a couple. They were used by snipers and snooker players; they lower your heart rate and calm your soul so your arm doesn’t move as much, giving you a better aim/more chance of hitting what you’re aiming at.
Not a good idea LeGit as it would be the end of Turks’s sex life.
I dunno. First young Turks plays BF2, then he goes to play airsoft and now he’s shooting at Bisley. At this rate he’ll be firing nukes at Korea by November.

ParticipantHeh. I used to make flick-book movies like that when I was younger. It’s good to see that somebody is keeping it real, rather than resorting to CGI 😉

Yep looks good however might just be myslightly innebriated state ofmind (3 legged pub crawl wahhaey) but wtf does this mean:
Ergonomically designed with a fibre-reinforced polymer shell, the Voss L-AR (Light Assault Rifle) is a close cousin of the Krylov FA-37, sacrificing incapacitation capabilities for increased portability and firing longevity. Used primarily in supportive, high movement scenarios, the Voss L-AR uses lower calibre ammunition allowing for higher volume cartridges, enabling prolonged suppressive assault.
😯Comfy and made of plastic, related to another gun, not as good at killing but easier to carry and can do longer bursts of fire. Not used as a main combat weapon, for support personnel (engineers, drivers and whatnot) has smaller rounds so you can fit a lot more of them in a magazine, meanining you can shoot for a good long time hehe.
Come on LeGIT, you’re talking to Divie. He needs it in simple terms:
It gun. Bit like other gun. Gun shoot little bullets a lot. It go BANG BANG BANG!
How’s that? 😉
