And cheers for having me guys, it was a very nice day out 🙂

Thanks also for putting Greg the “cable salesman” at our table 😆 and of course for surrounding me with lesbains but failing to encourage mud wrestling 🙁

Pity no other XDC were able to make it, but it did get me thinking that if we ever did plan a massive XDC meet, Belfast isn’t actually all that bad a choice for a location. You can fly there from a ton of airports across the UK, and for next to nothing (it only cost me 20 quid from Edinburgh and was 25 minutes in the air – same price and an hour in the air from London). Accommodation is, for a major city, probably amongst the cheapest in the UK, the nightlife’s good, and there’s plenty of touristy things to do if anyone wanted to make a weekend out of it. Probably should’ve made more of all this before, but it’s worth mentioning in case someday we can be arsed organising a geek meet 🙂

found a cracking bunch to play with, shame other xdc dont dig it….ah well

I’ll be trying it again once I sort out my net connection.

COD5 I’ll try if it slips into a christmas stocking, otherwise it might be a while, but I might enjoy COD games more now as my new net connection should be a lot better than the one I had at home with the fantastic 100-150+ pings.

    You playing still alzir?

I am mate but with moving to scotland and losing the power supply on my pc (which has only just been fixed) I’ve not been about much over the last couple of months. I think I’m finally sorted now though, and assuming I can fix the problem I’m having connecting to the wireless router in my new flat (which keeps disconnecting me every 10 seconds – any ideas?), then i should be back online tonight. I’m trying to save a bit of money up now as well so you should be seeing a lot of me over the next few months.

As for eve updates, the walking in stations thing’s a waste of time, but they might have actually made an improvement recently with the module stacking thing. I’ve not had a chance to play the game yet since this was introduced but I’ve heard it’s made a significant difference to the lag you get in massive fights, which I hope is true because eve’s been doing my tits in recently with the lag, and me losing practically all my isk to it 🙁

Well if it’s a scam it’s a damn good one and I’ll get home tonight to find all my stuff cleared out and the locks changed 😉 I was encouraged a bit on Friday by an offical letting agency (whose details I could check) following up on all my references, and felt a lot better when I met the landlord in person. All the paperwork was sorted and he even accepted a cheque for the rent and deposit, having originally asked for cash. It all looks good, and it’s such a relief to finally have a place sorted!

Oh and if anyone’s ever passing through Edinburgh, feel free to give me a shout and we can go for a pint or something. Where I am is very close to the centre (about 20 min walk), and 5 minutes walk from Haymarket station which is 1 stop before the end of the line if arriving in the city by train, and also on the airport bus route. Couple of nice bars in the area too 🙂

posting at the same time ftw

but meh, console version, can’t even think how that would work as I imagine a RTS on a console would be even worse than a FPS.

You can actually turn images off through your control panel, just incase of dodgy images turning up in a random thread about here 🙂

And Turks, what do you think of Civ Revs?

Well I put this thread up because I really wasn’t getting anything useful from the citizens advice people, except for a landlord registry website (which the guy is on) and I was starting to wonder were my concerns paranoid since cab didn’t seem to think there was anything too strange going on. I also spoke with someone at shelter who advised the information the landlord was asking for wasn’t always asked for, but they wouldn’t consider it unusual (they did appreciate my concern at least). I also contacted my bank who said there was little the guy could do with my bank details as far as verification goes or anything else for that matter, since they’d have to have my signature provided along with any request from a landlord to check my account was valid, and same for anything else (essentially I’m covered if the bank authorise any payments without my written signature). Finally I’m between a rock and a hard place atm, so I took Insanes advice on this and threw a deliberate typo into my bank details, gambling that my bank are correct and he’ll not have anyway to pick it up. It’ll be interesting if he does pick up on it though as I’ll be asking how he managed to do this, and that’ll be the sign to walkaway.

As far as applying for credit in my name goes, good luck to him, I can’t even manage that atm, but this was my main concern. I decided proceed though based on the lack of alarm bells being rung at CAB and Shelter.

I’m gambling a bit but we’ll see what happens in the next couple of days.

The business practice was a bit dodgy, and while I’m not completely convinced this was why he quit, I’m glad I missed out on it after hearing what they do.

It took 7 or 8 years before I got one, and even then it came from one of the Rats 😆

Hope you had a good one Mike!

There are still more than enough of us playing on the pc, the problem is the same as why there’s no console section in xdc yet, nobody can be arsed organising stuff. At the end of August there, before I eased off on the TF2 drive, we had a time when you could get a game with another XDC member quite easily, on weekends we were beginning to fill the server for periods, and I was confident arranging friendlies for us. RL intervened for me and that’s been a setback for TF2, but we can get back to it hopefully once my computers fixed. Considering at the start of the summer we struggled to get even a couple of us together on a public, it just serves as an example of what can be done with a bit of time and effort.

The same could easily be done for COD4 and, to a lesser extent, for consoles, or for any game anyone plays. All it takes is for someone to step forward and do something about it. You’ll not get all of XDC participating but all you need is a small XDC playerbase, and together you can find new members who fit in with your own ideas and the XDC ethos etc. This is something we need to organise and discuss elsewhere though.

At present there is interest in having our own server but not enough people able to make them work, whether that be due to lack of will or lack of time, but both certainly apply. I haven’t checked the stats for a month or so but last I looked there was no activity worth talking about on any of the servers, and the TF2 one had the only significant spikes of activity since our last renewal date. We’ll have the same problem with a smaller server, and actually if we couldn’t get it to work on our current setup, where we have complete control of an entire machine and have been able to create an active server for practically any game we want, then we’re not going to do any better with restricted options on a downgraded setup.

We need to get back to playing alongside each other before anything else, get together on public servers and use our TS while we’re there, work as a team, and generally get back to enjoying games with each other again. Only once we reach the stage of having too many XDC regularly queuing to get onto the same public server(s), or when we have a team willing to organise and participate in regular matches (something which is maybe still possible with TF2), should we reconsider the server question.

heh cheers for the efforts guys, sadly I didn’t get the chance to tell any as I spent the interview being interrogated over why the mate who’d got me the interview had quit the same morning….such is life, but at least I missed out on the chicken dance and song 🙂

There’s not enough interest within our own ranks to maintain the servers, despite attempts to encourage it with the server situation highlighted. XDC has to drag itself out of inactivity to be able to recruit, and only once we’ve started recruiting again can we consider supporting any servers, otherwise it’s a waste of resources. We were making progress on the TF2 front up until the end of August when unfortunately I had to stop organising things due to moving house, job, and everything that goes with that. I’ll be back on it very soon though, but perhaps the state of the servers has been my own focus for too long now and I should switch that attention to the needs of xdc itself. We’ve just turned nine years old as a clan, but we’re in a trough in terms of activity and I think it’s about time we had a look into how we’re organised. We don’t need to compromise xdc’s ethos to actually get a bit of structure about the place, and I’ve a few ideas as to how this could be done assuming we have a couple of people willing to help out with it. The idea of leaving things to whoever could be arsed to do something has only ever been effective on rare occasions over the years, and if we want to be around to make even our 10 year anniversary, a bit of effort’s going to have to made over the next few months.

I don’t mean to say here that XDC member’s participation will become an issue, but we should be looking at who our active membership is (in terms of the games being played), and keeping things fresh amongst them, and recruiting according to their needs.

So yea, dump the servers altogether is my opinion, as much as it pains me to say it, but be sure to praise the likes of Gonzo for all the help he gave us as he really pulled out a lot of stops for us, me in particular! I’d also suggest holding some resources in reserve should we reach a level of particpation again that would warrant having a server, but this is something people considerably richer than me can decide on as my own contribution to the server problem has only been time, as I’ve been able to afford little else 🙁

As for XDC, it’s back to the drawing board for us I think.
