KeymasterWas having a look at the setup for map voting today trying to tweak it a bit, and ended up talking with Recon from -=CRAZY=- who handles their server. I’ve been wanting to allow map voting for anyone on the server when no admins are about, as I didn’t want to see “rtv” being abused while we were online, but wanted to leave it on so people didn’t get bored when we’re offline (taking a long term view here). Recon was saying though that with anyone allowed to vote on their server they found it caused some ping issues, and so they disabled it. What they have now is an automatic vote a few minutes near the end of each map and the server then switches to the winning map at the end of round, although admins can run @votemaps at any time if they want. To get around the map being stuck on unpopular maps while admins are offline he suggested giving regulars on server the ability to start a vote themselves. You’d do this by adding them to the admin list but only giving them the votemap flag, and I think there’s also a way to restrict this so their admin status only comes into effect when “master” admins are offline – and in that way we’d maintain control of the system while on the server ourselves.
I’m going to set this up because I think their system works quite well, and we’ll see how well it suits us. If anyone has any objections to it or can think of better way of configuring votes, post away 🙂
The config will look like this:
//*******************************************************************
////////////////////MapVotes
//********************************************************************
//values (0,1)//automatic map votes (mp_timelimit)
AutoMapVotes 1
//Amount of time for mp_timelimit hit to start a mapvote
AutoVoteMapTime 29.0
//values (0,1,2,3,4,5) Allow Voting 1 Admin Only,2 Anyone When No Admin ,3 Anyone, 4 same as 2 but uses numberofrockers to initate if no admins present,5 admins use rtv same as players (can change howmany they get as an admin)
Allowvoting 1
//VoteFrequency seconds after a vote someone can @votemap(s) again
VoteFrequency 180
//"Percentage of players needed for mapvoteS");
VoteMapsPercent "0.3"
//"Percentage of players needed for single mapvote");
VoteMapPercent "0.3"
//values 0,1 Picks a random map from mapcycle for nextmap
bm_randommapcycle 0
//DontIncludeLastMaps (values 0,positive number of the last maps played not to include in votemaps
DontIncludeLastMaps 2
//ExtendTimeLimit 20 NUMBER or minutes to extend map if extend wins map vote
ExtendTimeLimit 20
//values (0,number of ppl needed to nominate a amp) 0 disabled.1 or more to require that many ppl to nominate a map
//admin_nominate admin level overrides this if enabled
NumberOfNominationsToAddMap 0
//value number of seconds to wait to count votes
bm_TimeToCountVotes 60
//values (0,numberofsecs) number of seconds to change map after a manual rockthevote or votemaps vote (if won)
//for use with custom maps that dont have round_end events..leave 0 and manual rtv's will use next round_end to change map
bm_ChangeMapTimer 0
//values (0, Number of rtv's an admins rtv counts as if allowvoting 4)
bm_AdminVoteRockers 1
//values (0, decimal percentage of number of players to use for rtv .25 =25%, or positive value to be that Many)
bm_NumberOfRockersNeeded 1A global setting ‘mp_timelimit 30’ and ‘mp_maxrounds 10’ will also be in effect.

KeymasterThis is odd, I’ve just had a look at the dustbowl settings and they’re the same as I left them before Gonzo did anything, and I tested they work as they should and they do. Has anyone else been playing with the config last night or today, because otherwise I’m at a complete loss as to why the map changed when it did last night 😕

KeymasterBig thanks to everyone tonight on the tf2 server, great effort! That was the most we’ve managed to get on our server since before Easter, just a pity the server settings probably ruined it. There was a problem with Steam update during the week causing our server to go down, and to fix it Gonzo used an image of some other server to reinstall tf2 on ours. He must’ve also used an old backup for beetlesmod as we ended up using a very old “noob” config which had been fixed. Luckily I made backups of recent server settings, so it’ll be fixed as soon as I get up tomorrow.
Again though, great turnout for an off the cuff session, and hopefully we can keep this momentum going 🙂

KeymasterWent for a deathadder in the end, as they were all much the same price, but finding a sensitivity I can actual handle is proving difficult, these things are crazy.

KeymasterWell ok you can wear sunglasses to help see in bright light (and they only help with ability to see comfortably rather than quality), but polarised lenses won’t improve vision in normal light. Still not HD though as you say, and if anything those standard glasses in the video have polarised lenses.
Aw I really wanted those glasses
Ahh well just wait until they develop one of these tess

Thought that was a bit of inuendu from Mags, but I’d say it’s hard to resist 😉

KeymasterI don’t know the legal ins and outs of it, but I’d say Judge is pretty much spot on there with that advice. With the credit crunch and all there’ll hardly be a long que of buyers, which you should bear in mind if they start being difficult.

KeymasterIf they even did film through a lens filtered by the glasses, all it shows is that the test/standard glasses are crap (or dirty). You saw nothing there on the video in what they imply is HD, you saw it in your normal vision, which is the highest definition you’ll ever see in. Nothing you put in front of your own eyes apart from prescribed corrective lenses will improve the definition of the light they receive. If you have perfect vision then no glasses will ever make an improvement at all, as you’re already at the highest level your biology will allow. Those boys are just trying to cash in on the notion of HDTV which we’re all aware off as a brand, but HDTV is only about improving the picture emitted from a TV set, not about improving your eyes. Eventually even HDTV will reach a limit that we can’t see beyond, as the limiting factor will become what our eyes can receive and interpret, which is hardwired into our biology.

KeymasterLet me know who are you though when I accept your invite, as I keep losing track of who’s who on my msn xdc list 😳

Keymaster😆 oh dear tess
I’ll give you a hand though, can you see the difference it makes on the video with your own eyes at the moment? Are you wearing the glasses?

KeymasterLike that fix to the backburner, assuming I’ve read it right, that gives you a chance to spin around and survive now yea? Probably just increase my suicide rate though, rocket splash damage is a little annoying that close 🙁

KeymasterI think the wrong end of the stick has been picked up here, my only purpose is to point out we’re trying to pimp the tf2 server now that it’s setup nicely. There’s no need for excuses why indiviuals can’t play etc, this is xdc it doesn’t matter, we all have other stuff to do. I’m just hoping to drum up a little support amongst the active tf2 players, but also remind people that anyone can pick up the gauntlet for a game, there’s no xdc overlord/hierarchy stopping it 🙂
Oh and ts has nothing to do with anything Paddy, I’ve spent hours in there counting the tumbleweed flying past, and even when there are people, TF2 has not been the game of choice. I suppose if we all used ts then you might have a point but we don’t, and steam serves the purpose better. That’s not the issue though and, again, I’m not trying to get at anyone, I just want to alert people to what I/we’re trying to do atm. So please, TF2 players, if you see me sitting on the server by myself, lend us a hand, the servers up and running and in some real need of attention 🙂
I hurried the orginal post for this thread, as I was anxious to get onto the server at the time, so I’ve probably come across wrong. I’ve hurried this post as well, as I’m omw to bed, so I hope it’s not too blunt, but just to clarify, nobody is being blamed or got at here.

KeymasterThere are actually 3 possible settings you could have there silver and I dunno which one is default (my one’s on subsilver2 which may or may not be default, I dunno). If you go into your user control panel and then click on board preferences, you’ll see an option to change your “board style”. Whatever it says in that box is the style you’re seeing currently.

KeymasterGonzo had already put Labor on our server and while I haven’t played it I did think it would play well, so it’s definately one we’ll be trying. The others there I haven’t seen so I’m putting them on now to look at, cheers 🙂 Egypt might be a bit big though, it’s a 70 meg download, though the reviews in that thread are a good sign.
I spent a lot of today looking for and installing a few other maps, and I’ve had some success. The one’s I mentioned above are all worth a go, and I’d like to see how they’ll play. Rock2 was the one I most looking forward to, but it’s not quite as polished as I’d hoped. The most annoying part of it is that the map gives you instructions to carry the intel back to “YOUR” base in order to activate the gas attack and this is actually a mistake. Just as in the original, when you took the key in their base to the gas in their base, you take the intel in their base to the gas chamber in THEIR base, so that will be confusing the first time anyone plays it. I also had a graphical glitch occur on the map which caused me to crash, but I’ve been having this issue for a while now anyway so I’d put it down to that for now. Apart from those two issues, it’s a great remake and I think we should at least try it while we wait for the second beta, due out in a few months.
Avanti’s an odd concept, and I was able to get a game of it on another a server which wasn’t bad. Blue have to pick up the intel from the start and carry it to cp 1, once it reaches there you cap the point and a new intel appears at cp1, which you then take to cp2 and so on. There are several different routes to each cp, but I would still like to see how it plays with a full server as I have a feeling it could get congested in places.
The District is another variation on ctf, with blue attacking to cap the intel, and red defending. I was a little disappointed with it when I first looked at it because the distance from the capture point to the intel is by no means great, but then I started looking at the defensive options, and then to the lines of attack and it became much more interesting. I’m slightly concerned that red could possibly camp blue into their starting position, but I’d need to see the map in action first. The creator describes the map as an offensive sniper, scout, and soldiers wetdream, and he’s right it is.
rc_overwatch I finally got working, and it’s another soldiers wet dream. Again you’d need to play test it, but I could see this map being played at quite a pace. You don’t have to cap the points in any order on this map, so it would play along the lines of a battlefield map with four areas to capture and having to simultaneously defend all areas that you hold. There’s a weird addition of two build in teleports (which appear as whisps of smoke on a wall) but I guess these will work to the maps benefit. Overall it’s well made and definately worth a try.
The classic 2fort’s a replica of the tfc version, just with an improved atmosphere outseide, it’s probably not one to bother a lot with.
Some other maps I’ve found and installed:
Well2 – the map we used to have on our old server. It’s almost an exact remake of the old well map in tfc, just has a better flag room, and it was always popular on the server in the past so it’s back.
CTF_Impact2 – I’ve seen this played on some match demo’s so it’s obviously got some proper playtesting, and it’s potentially the best map I found today.
CTF_Chaos – Looks good and well balanced, with a big area in the middle which should provide some epic fights. There’s a really short route to the intel along the top of the map though, so it’ll be important to setup defence quickly, but it could get annoying if you don’t have enough players concentrating on defence (could say that about any map though).
cp_Warpath2 – I think most of us have played this on other servers, or at least v1 of it. It can get a little bogged down on the final two points, but normally that’s just caused by that instant spawn crap.
I’ve no thoughts of putting these on the rotation but they’re good for practice and mucking about on if it’s late some night or the servers just not filling.
CTF_BBall – designed for 3v3 soldiers, it’s a basketball court with the intel placed in the middle and a basketball hoop at either end of the court. You rocket jump the soldiers to land on top of the hoop to score by slamdunking the intel. Quite good fun, and it’s brilliant practice for a soldier, especially rocket jumps and mid air shots.
Duel_duel2 – An arena to fight 1v1 in, used for 1v1 tournaments on various sites.
Duel_parallel – Same as above but has 3 arenas cut off from each other, so you could have three 1v1’s going at once.
