KeymasterGood job guys, was that 100km non stop basically over 33 hours straight? That’s some effort, although I’m sure it helped having those flags to run to Max 😉
Oh and nice Mohawk 🙂

KeymasterOh and also very important…. loss has to hurt. No pvp, lose a ship, get the same one back because you unlocked access to it…i.e. the main problem with freelancer.

KeymasterI better clarify then. I expect a game to allow territory control, and territory development, or at least some sort of monetary gain, in game terms, from holding territory. Pvp has to also be the most prevalent and lucrative past time in the game, with lucrative areas not policed by npcs.

KeymasterYea i’ve been keeping an eye on both but what i’m really after is a space sim like eve but with manual flight. Atm from what i’ve been hearing, neither elite nor sc live up to my pvp aspirations.

Keymastersingle player atmospheric or multiplayer tense?
Alzir
KeymasterNot heard of it tbh, unless it’s that minecraft like thing i saw on steam the other day where the devs are allowing the community to take the lead on development or something?
Alzir
KeymasterOf you go light years off the beaten path, and then leave, will that system remain the way you found it? Also, can you drop a base or structure there and have it persist when you’re not there?
Alzir
KeymasterAwesome, i can now test whether i’ve got any better…i’ll try and ensure i am as pissed for this test.

KeymasterHow much was the beta?

KeymasterOh and finally, I’d recommend the game at this price for ANYONE who enjoyed the original. I’ve more than got my £10 out of the game after last week’s steam sale, and this is a cheaper offer.

KeymasterAlso Chris just bought it here so it’s definitely legit.

shame Rocket missed the boat big time!
Yea it’s a real shame, and I’m starting to feel a bit worried by DayZ.
Saying that he missed the boat is certainly true with regards to the game, but on the other hand he has been able to cash in on the mod’s success personally. I don’t know what position he held in the company, but in single handedly transforming a mediocre bug ridden game into a steam top seller, he was propelled to a project lead position, which I think he’s failed badly at. OK building a MMO architecture around a fps game is likely to be pretty hard, but at the very least he underestimated the task at hand by giving us what proved to be an unrealistic timeframe for release, which served only to increase the hype. It could be that the company forced this on him, in an attempt to cash in again before others moved into the same space, but to end up almost a year overdue, with only a bare bones alpha to show for it, is close to unforgivable. During that year we saw Rocket globetrotting promoting the game, as well as fucking off on an extremely expensive trip to climb Everest in the middle of the game’s development. Also in that time a member of the dev team was imprisoned in Greece for something, and this was used as an excuse for the delays experienced! Get someone else in ffs!
My worry now is that having cashed in personally, and having become a name in the gaming industry, he will now be walking off for a lucrative contract somewhere else or to start his own studio. He’s already said that he’ll be leaving his current role at the end of this year. For the rest of us what does that then leave? The game has already been released, and if it is to continue with centralised dedicated server support, it must be an expensive proposition to maintain for whoever controls the purse strings (I think that’ll be bohemmia). They don’t have any kind of subscription model and they’ve allowed 2 million sales of the game at an apparently low price (although very high for what we’ve got), so where will they receive the funds to support development of the game after this year? We might start to see DLC of some kind, but that’ll be extremely difficult to implement without becoming pay to win.
I’m starting to wonder whether this game will be the first popular “get everyone to buy an alpha to support development” game, which then fails to deliver on the developer’s promise.

KeymasterRight so after a couple of drunken games last weekend with Ben, and while this was still on offer I decided to just get it because the game felt much improved from beta. So much has been improved I’m actually quite impressed.
Paddy also got hold of it and so yesterday we had a few games against each other to try and work out how everything works, and whether or not we like it. It’s fair to say that Paddy was struggling a bit with the enjoyment part but I’m hoping that’ll change a bit when I show him a couple of replays, however I’m starting to really quite like the game.
I’m struggling at the moment to find any major differences between this current build and the original, other than changes to specific units. In terms of Micro, build orders, and teching up, each faction has it’s own unique traits, much like US vs Wehrmacht in COH1, and the way you integrate that with your play is very similar.
The command point system is slightly different, and the economy has changed a little, so that you are now quite handsomely rewarded with resources if you control a lot of territory, with the smaller munitions and fuel points removed and replaced by what were previously population control points/territory connectors, and which now provide a %age resource boost. It’s effectively the same as before I think, just with some subtle differences, but the importance of the points was not initially clear and so we had some difficulties early on. It’s good as it keeps you on your toes and rewards aggressive play.
There are some things I’ve still not seen in detail, such as commander loadouts which need to be unlocked, and we do have a concern over this as some of the commander abilities can only be unlocked via paid DLC. I’ll reserve judgement on that until I see how powerful it is. I did also have some concerns over the matchmaking in the game, as you seem to progress through XP driven levels (COD/BF style) quite quickly, and I wondered was this how the determine your skill level (in other words did they make the mistake of assuming high ranking player = good player?). It would seem that this is not the case though, as I found this article, which sounds pretty good http://www.coh2.org/topic/5485/coh-2-matchmaking.
Anyway that’s just a quick overview of what I’ve seen so far, the game was definitely worth my £10 investment, but I’m not sure whether I’d recommend it at the normal price. The game is a graphical upgrade on the original, and at first glance seems to offer the same kind of playstyle, but there are some concerns re paid DLC, and I suppose it’s fair to caution that the overall game balance is hard to assess at the noob level. If you liked the original though, and maybe just like some 2v2’s or comp stomping, then you should like this.

KeymasterRight Steve, here’s what I think of this game. It looks promising but I’m not allowing myself to get too excited about it, because this could just be another quickly developed pile of crap in an attempt to cash in on the DayZ phenomena. I’ve not had a chance to watch that video yet because I’m currently stuck with the crappy net connection here and it’s buffering like fuck, however I’ve seen a few others previously.
I’m glad it’s free to play because I’d not give it a second look otherwise, so when it’s released I’ll be right in there to see for myself how it feels. Having vehicles in it is a plus, and while being able to make your own base is interesting, it does make me a little nervous as I thought that would be good in rust, but then didn’t like they way it was implemented there. I also don’t like how in a previous video I watched, the devs focused a lot on fire, which is a bit meh. If they consider that some kind of selling point, what’s the rest of the game going to be like?
Alzir
Keymasterlol steve, I made this thread not to hijack yours, so don’t hijack this!
Anyway, what’s the combat like so far Beer, and how to you rate the potential for clan based pvp? In particular is there space which can be conquered, or can you establish your own bases about the place? Also can you land on planets like in the original series (at least you could in Elite Final Frontier), and do they have jump drives like the original where you plot you destination with the distance you can jump being controlled by the type of jump drive you have and the amount of fuel you carry, or are the systems gated like in Eve or Freelancer? Also do you travel around solar systems freely and is there much to explore in a system? Oh and how big do the systems feel?
