The strange thing is that I have quite a few books by ben elton on my shelves (well on fluffs really as I never get them back) yet have never bought one – either people buy them or give them to me. I do enjoy them I just would never buy one out of choice
Blind Faith is eltons version of 1984 – which is ironic as I just read 1984 recently. This time he is predicting forward based on trends in our current society rather than a potential communist threat. So the future he for sees is after the great flood, privacy is illegal, everyone is famous by law, webcams are a requirement of every room, near nudity is normal, courts are now jerry springer type events and the ‘voice of the people’ make the law controlled by the temple. religion is also rampant and science is condemned by burning.
It is hard to read with out thinking 1984 at every stop and he even has a little play with this at times. So the question you are asking yourself all the way through is… will he survive!
so its a battle between humanists and religion in a world where everyone is religious.. which is well worth a read.
