Last night, we had an issue where a player on the server complained about RPG on infantry and a discussion was had about the legality of this tactic. It’s not against the server rules as stated but I just fancied a quick discussion on it.
Now I don’t mind the odd RPG on infantry, it’s part of an engineers arsenal and if needs be, they should use it against infantry. I did however get annoyed at a player on the server a few nights ago who ran around (on a map with no vehicles) exclusively with his RPG out, using it on infantry.
What should our policy be on this. Like I said, I understand the need to RPG infantry when you are caught out, or need to get a player in an entrenched position or even a cheecky shot for a laugh, but I beleive roaming the map and using RPG against every player (didn’t see him with SMG once) is a nono.
What do you guys think?
February 25, 2011 at 11:01 am #78503xdcmaniacParticipantI disagree, a weapon is a weapon. The RPG moves really slow, and unlike a round from a smg it can be avoided, plus the RPG has a long reload time, limited ammo capacity. Easy solution? Stab the fucker. But on a similar vein, this goes back to my argument last night that the server is there to let the members of XDC have a place to game by our preferred method, and as such, the Admins should not have any doubts about kicking people for any reason. It’s a public server, but not a public service. If the Admins don’t like the use of RPG’s and its spoiling the game, Kick.
February 25, 2011 at 12:30 pm #78504XDCErratic-SpaceParticipantI’m with Maniac except it can’t be one rule for us and one rule for others.
Personally I can’t stand servers that restrict what you can play with. I think RPGs on infantry are fine as main weapon or not. I don’t actually try and use it as my main weapon though, that guy last night stressed at me over the kill but he forgot that I’d taken out 5 tanks and one chopper too! I’ve been on servers that stress at me sometimes for the RPG but to be honest why should I have to change quickly to my uzi to take out someone when they come into view whilst I’m lining up a tank? Tis madness!
I think you guys discussed last night about limiting classes?! I really hope we don’t go down that route either. if a team loses becauses they’ve all gone snipers then they lose because they’ve all gone snipers. The choice is there so teams can form winning tactics, I think we should never look to reduce choice.
But attacking spawn base is one we are good to keep, that map last was spoilt by a whole load of uncap rapers.
One other thing, are we allowed into the other base to steal their tanks? Wasn’t sure.

I’m in complete agreement with you, you shouldn’t have to change from RPG to SMG to kill someone, in my eyes, that’s totally acceptable. I just think it was a special case of someone not even using the SMG, RPG only and a map with no vehicles (think he was doing it for 3 maps before I kicked him).
I’m with you on the limiting classes too, shouldn’t be done. I think we should be able to steal vehicles though, so long as you take the vehicles out of their spawn before you start killing them with it.
February 25, 2011 at 1:22 pm #78506xdc the docParticipantWell everyone has different takes on this but my personal opinion for what it is worth is that all these proposed rules are arbitrary, will be used inconsistently, and lead to us alienating possibly good players.
The game mechanics are robust enough… I would like anything to go… and have problems even with the sawn raping rule to be honest.
I cant be arsed writing all the examples where this kind of rule is open to misinterpretation – but trust me there are lots of potential issues.
COI – been kicked from servers before for stupid reasons and never went back to them.
February 25, 2011 at 1:58 pm #78507XDC_WolfParticipantCOI? not sure on that abbreviation!
I have a very firm stance on this, rpg on infantry is fine, as gay as the noob tube for cheap kills but it IS part of the game mechanics and as Doc says, the rules will be inconsistent. Ultimately it will be down to whoever is admining but what we do want is fairness in the admining and a case by case approach.
For example spawn raping has been massively reduced in this version of battlefield, gone are the days of people standing next to your spawn and killing you as you spawn (although it is legitimate to do this anywhere outside the uncap, there are normally a few places to spawn as you can spawn on your team mates). However there are times when it is impossible to spawn anywhere because of the spawn raping. Last night was a good example on Cao San temple (conquest). It was decided to kick those players that were doing it and we did. I informed the server that I had kicked two people for base raping and the problem went away (kind off). Later on though on a rush map we got grief from someone for spawn raping. As far as I am concerned there is no possible way to defend and win without spawn raping, likewise there really is no way to win attacking without spawn raping, that is the nature of rush, it puts the two teams very close to each other and the defenders spawn practically on the objectives.
Here is the problem though, everyone admins to their own standards and these are always going to be inconsistent, as a rule I will ask on TS and discuss with whoever is on as to whether there is reason to kick (kicking is what I usually do, not banning, more of that later) and follow the advice of others, but I normally warn privately by yelling directly at people through RCON and watch them for a bit (even Doc occasionally agrees with me about kicking people). The sever is ours but it is nothing without other players on, we could never fill the server if it was private!
We want the server to be a good place to play, with good players, it’s the only way we improve by watching what the rank 50’s do and working out ways to beat them (Antananarivo for example), we don’t get a decent reputation for being someone who kicks for the slightest of reasons, and especially not for someone who is just bloody good at the game and is kicking your ass. Just because we rent the server out does not mean we have to be the best players on the server. Some of the best games have been as a result of fighting back from an almost unwinnable situation against really good guys, what we should be doing is getting into squads and using teamwork to overcome the obstacles, be that someone going sniper for a wee while to clear the entrenched positions, having a medic doing his job and talking clearly about positions (not any of this “on the hill adjacent to B” when there are TWO hills adjacent to B, one north/ north east, the other west).
We also want the teams to be balanced so if there are three rank 50’s on one side, move one to the other team using RCON, although I did that last night and it didn’t really work because the other rank 50 left and we had two rank 50’s against us on Cao San who did the spawn raping! /there is more to say on the admining side of things, but I want to keep the rest private so I am going to do a post in the Admin section later this afternoon.

Agreed! Adjacent means “next to” not closest to. Although the debate provided the best 5 minuets I have ever on-line, except the time I found that Donkey Porn site.. 😳
Your all right in a way. It can be frustrating to get a hammering, and we’re all guilty of having misplaced suspicions about certain players (in particular the 50 ranks), but some folk are just that good, and spend more time than any of us playing this title. I do have my suspicions about low ranked players racking up huge KIll/Death ratios, as we all know how steep the learning curve is in BFBC2.
It’s far more satisfying to play in squads, I actually don’t really enjoy playing with folk unless there is TS involved, but we need to “play as a squad” as Paddy says, a good mix of classes, last man standing stays out of trouble etc.. There is nothing more disheartening than killing 3 enemy, missing one, and then his 3 mates all re-appear. We need more of that. In vehicle heavy maps I think we do quite well as we are all tank/chopper whores, but I will always give up my tank/chopper to a more able driver. A tanks is far more effective with 2 men, and a such should be left at base until it can be fully manned.
Snipers are essential, but must take recon as a primary duty (hence my comments about binoculars last night). It’s not a way to rack up easy kills, but a stream of info for the other classes that is invaluable particularly in conquest.Damn I’m rambling again.. 😕

What wolf said.
Think I was guilty of poor admin last night as I have never admined a server before and am new here. The guys who were spawn raping came straight back in and I gave them a temp ban to stop them doing this. Didn’t realise that’s not how it’s done, do now, lesson learned.
Again, I am the same, I would never kick without discussing it on TS, I just used the wrong process last night I think. Regarding the RPG, I guess it’s more of my pet peve than harrassment of a server, everyone doesn’t seem to mind it, I’ll try to cry less about it.
As I said, I’m new to server admin (and infact being part of a clan) so if I fuck up, let me know.
Cheers
February 25, 2011 at 3:34 pm #78510xdcmaniacParticipantThis is all fluff anyways.. I have seen the future, and it’s ZOMBIES!!
February 25, 2011 at 3:35 pm #78511XDCErratic-SpaceParticipantCool about the tanks that spawn being able to take ’em.
I think we’re all pretty much in agreement here, like Doc said the more rules the more of a pain it can be. I certainly agree with Maniac that for me the real enjoyment is when everyone’s on TS. I’ll not bother jumping on the game if people aren’t in TS because it loses so much. It’s why for the first time in forever I’ve actually been know to tell my xbox leave mates I can’t play FIFA just yet as I’m on Battlefield!
That one map on which they were kicking our ass…that’s the only thing I’m not sure about really. I mean fair play they did such a great job of pushing us back the choice then becomes spawn-die straight away, or don’t spawn till the tickets go down. I think on Rush or Conquest firing into uncap is still a no-no, more so on Conquest.
Glad you all pretty much agree with the RPG stuff. First chopper I shot down last night was well chuffed.

I think I got a bit shouty about that, sorry!
