Are we really that secure against bots ?
Lately i’ve been receiving some emails, normally 2 or 3 a day all laid out in the same way, i’ve no idea where they come from but wonder if anyone else on here has been recently getting similar emails……….perhaps we’ve been targeted by someone for some reason.

But, since you raised the issue I assume that youAs you can see, all very similar but completey random text in the content……..It would be interesting to know if others are receiving similar as then we clearly have a problem with bots being used to extract our emails from the site and also post random bollocks in our forums….

I am receiving spam at a level I haven’t seen for years, right now. This is both to my work and home emails. It is all coming in recognisable template formats.

The short answer to your problem involving auto-registering bots is to put a graphical login validation….
Meaning… that when someone attempts to post a message, they will be displayed a random group of five characters. The ‘user’ or ‘bot’ will have to type in the displayed graphical key in order for their message to be saved or posted.
Humans can read graphics and type in the displayed graphical characters… whereas STUPID BOTS get stumped at that point and are unable to post because they cannot input the correct randomly generated graphical characters to allow their message to proceed.
You should be able to find this at the phpBB web site.
Another short and simple dirty trick you can pull on the BOTS is to alter the word AGREED that is used in PHPbb to another word like AQUEED. This is explained over at the phpBB web site where you have to make the four or five changes. The beauty of this trick is that the stupid bots that ry to auto-register on to the web sites are pre-programmed to use the word ‘AGREED’ in their auto-registration attempts. But if your phpBB doesn’t use AGREED and instead used AQUEED the bot will simply get a 404 error page ( because as far as your web server is concerned the BOT has attempted an invalid command. This is such a simple trick to pull on the BOTS and there isn’t much they can do about it without changing the coding to match your site.
I noticed on the Multiplay forum that you can’t put hyperlinks in until you’ve posted at least 15 times – This may help here also
but you already have to add the pictures of the text to get an account…. i will look into the aqueed thingy
ok i have installed a number of mods which will allow me to look after and manage bots
so hopefully this should be an end to this crap
