Ok – Ive got my new netgear rangemax next (using the n protocol) router working. Speeds seem good and no drop outs so far.
Having issues with some sites however – usually things that need buttons pressed to ‘add to cart’ etc – making me wonder if it is some java issue. The speedguide link on Sprogs thread lets me test the download speed – but hangs on the upload speed – which I think is a flash plugin.
Am I right in thinking that this is a router firewall issue? Its not very clearly explained IMO – and Im fucked if I know which ports you would need to specify to let things like that through.
It seems such a hassle to me… am i better trying to open all the ports and justrelying on a software firewall like I used to do? I dont like how this router seems to block things – but doesent tell you they are being blocked… just gives the ‘error loading page message’ that could mean anything.
March 13, 2007 at 11:31 pm #48585AnonymousParticipantI normally have mine set to respond to pings and disable the firewall, if I bother using a firewall I monitor it myself and use a software firewall as you mentioned. I’ve never really had any problems with my router, but I wouldn’t have bothered going for a rangemax unless I planned to use the matching rangemax transceiver to make use of it’s ‘n’ protocol. I don’t think changing it to b&g would make any difference to your problem, but then again it seems like you have a problem with java/flash anyway. Are you on the latest build of Java? You do know the Macromedia has been bought by adobe and the latest versions are on Adobe.com? IIRC you shouldn’t need to open any ports though (I could be wrong) but as they’re going through a browser and the browser is typically on port 80 which is usually open, then they’re probably using port 80 too, being a browser plugin? I have actually had a problem similar to yours recently since NTL rebranded to Virgin Media – my connection randomly goes to shit, sometimes when you try to reconnect you can’t see their DHCP server for hours and when you do connect the DNS servers like to drop 1 – all packets when pinging… and have a shitty latency =/ Don’t suppose you’re on Virgin Media?
March 14, 2007 at 8:46 am #4858611thSignalParticipantmight be the MTU amount, you might want to check it out although in experience that stops you getting onto sites completely not parts of it.
March 14, 2007 at 9:44 am #48587XDC wild egg tamerParticipantuse this tweak test………
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
then d/l the proggie Drtcp
http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
and you should be able to make the relevent settings to hopefully improve your connection issues.
good luck.
March 16, 2007 at 12:08 am #48588xdc the docParticipantLegit why would I buy a rangemax N router and not the adapter? 🙄
Anyways…. thanks for that link WET – didnt really help, but worth a try. Solved a major issue 5 mins ago though – found that the reason games/ music were stuttering every couple of minutes was an issue with windows zero config serrvice running in the background.
Now… this is why I hate PC’s. Its taken tech savvy me 3 days to unearth this very important nugget of information. How the heck does your average man on the street work his home PC? They are so fucking unreliable and un user friendly. Grrrrr.
Anyway – I now have a wifi speed of 270MBPs…. sweet 🙂 Seems pretty solid at the moment.
Only weirdness now is…. I cant log onto XDC in firefox??? I put in my details and it just takes me to the public forum screen like it didnt notice? WTF? In IE I can log in but it refuses to remember my password even when asked. Anyone able to enlighten me on this loveable little PC quirk?
March 16, 2007 at 12:35 am #48589XDC-snellParticipantFirefox knows your from scotland 😯

Quite a lot of people just buy the rangemax router and use their non-rangemax cards built into their laptops or whatever.

lol – you know a lot of these people do you? Why would they buy a router twice the price of other wi-fi alternatives if they wont be able to use its main feature?

I can field this one if I may. What us normals do is generally spend a couple of hours shouting “FOR FUCKS SAKE!” at the PC, the cat, the missus before punching the nearest object until you hurt your hand quite badly and then snapping the offending part into 200 bits and throwing the shrapnel all over the house in a blind rage.
Then you put your old parts back in your PC and make do.
Hope this has been of some help.

Because they’re the same tards who don’t attempt to indicate, check their mirrors or pay attention when driving ;o
Some of the bigger chain stores around here in those retail parks (comet etc) have a badly maintained shelf of various routers and more often than not the only things left by netgear on there are the rangemax. There is the odd router from belkin and other makes too, but the shelves are in a piss poor state of display so they just grab whatever netgear they see because of a reccomendation. A lot of people are more often than not baffled by the various standards and speeds and don’t really care what they have or how much it costs, so long as it works with what they’ve got or what they’re gonna buy. They could always ask the staff which would be best for them but more often than not the staff are salesmen and not necessarily ever used any of the equipment.
I have seen a lot of these people too as I’ve been out in the wild fixing this and that for various people – friends, friends of friends, then friends of friends of friends and their families!
March 16, 2007 at 3:32 pm #48594xdc the docParticipantOk… if anyones interested (sice you are all useless feckers) I solved the problem myself by clearing my cache and cookies.
Next technical problem please? Im on a roll! 🙄

March 16, 2007 at 4:15 pm #48595XDC Erratic-SpaceParticipantYeah about time I tried out RO having finally picked it up the other day.
