ParticipantSo is it stuff like making vocational training available?
I’m pretending that I know what I’m doing as a network security bod at Lancaster Uni. They also give me a 4×4 to tool about the Lake District and climb radio masts so it’s quite varied.
What are you planning on after the degree, further study, job or world domination?

ParticipantOooo Wipers works at Southampton I think… you could have university network chats!
You asked for it so…its about empowering through community education – but they have their wires crossed. Basically modern community development revolves around community involvement – so they have tried to do that within the neighbourhood colleges – giving the power to the people to ask for the courses they need, to improve their employability. However, 60% or so of the enrolled students are retired or employed, and have different course demands than those who are unemployed (wanting recreational courses like arts and crafts, family history etc, rather than accredited courses in teaching, numeracy, it etc). As they are much more enclined to speak up about their demands, the courses are being provided, and the poor unemployed people are getting fucked over.
The conflicting empowerment theories revolve around the Liberational model (Linked to the writings of Paulo Freire) whereby community involvement allows people to amass, and fight social exclusion (basically – its actually alot more complicated than this)… however, the fundamental aim of the project is to get people in to employment… which is more akin to the consumerist model – empowering people so that they can make informed decisions within societies current structures (ie gain employment). So its all about raising social capital or human capital – are you more interested in the general improvement of the area on the large scale, or empowering people on an individual basis to gain employment, on the small… both doesnt work!
There!
Btw… we rent a flat (Off =XDC= Munkee’s father) just outside of Grange over Sands… such a beautiful part of the world.

I am looking in to an ESF funded scheme aiming to improve (via empowering) the employability of socially excluded people in Gloucestershire.
Basically it is working to some degree, but they are fucking around with conflicting empowerment theories and so its not working on a scale that it should be…
Its all a load of red tape gayness in the anus.
