those plugs dont work if you have seperate circuit mains, IE upstairs and downstairs, like on my house

Thats all there is to it…. but the argument is… cable is cheap… why run one when you can run two? It is sensible future proofing.

The sky questions have been answered I think (BTW – that is why I told you to run 2 coax everywhere.)
My nas has all the media… it outputs only to monitors in my house (I dont own a TV!) but a lot of modern tellies let you connect to networks anyway dont they? Xbox or playstation would certainly do the job if your TV is an old one though.
For internet radio – you can just install squeezebox on your NAS..

If they are not required then i assume all i need to do is connect the router to the switch panel. Run separate lines out from the switch to the data points. Connect the NAS to the router (or switch?) and then hopefully have interweb/network access at all points?
Thats it basically – you dont need the voice panel that I have there – or the data panel (though it keeps things nice and tidy.) You could just go straight to your switch.

No – you are better buying a proper Krone type punch down tool for cat 5 connections – it isn;t quite the same as punching down plain old telephone wire connections (I think.)

I’ve decided to get this switch:
to which i will connect my router. I’m going to run 2 lines to most points as doc has suggested and am contemplating 3 by the main TV to cover myself for a console, internet ready TV and media streaming device. I’m not going to go the way of having a NAS instead i’m opting for the mede8er unit which i will use as my NAS and have a second one in the extension streaming any files from the main one.
Regards my sky tv, i’m not too fussed about having a separate feed for my sky in the extension as that would entail an additional box with another card at an additional cost monthly. Instead i may just piggy back the signal from the main box into the extension and use a magic eye type device to change channels with a 2nd remote. Failing that i’ll just run a line from the antenna in the loft via a booster and just use freeview.
Coincidentally today i received through the post a catalogue from screwfix titled electricfix which has everything i need to finish this off; cable, connectors, plugs and outlet plates so once i’ve ordered the switch i can get on and get it all wired up.

Like I said the med8er thing will probably work… but it is frickin expensive. I got a ready nas duo with 2tb for cheaper than the 1tb version of this thing. You are paying a lot for a flash interface.
lol about the pcworld comments. I did a quick search for the netgear and it came up as pcworld surprisingly being the cheapest; normally i wouldn’t get anything from there simply because they are generally so much more than elsewhere. Saying that, now i’ve seen that switch you’ve posted, i may need to redo my searches 😉 The thing i like about the netgear is the size, it’s only about 4″ deep so will fit into my cupboard in the hall where i’m now planning to site the switch and router. The pluscom will fit but once i allow space for the power lead and the lines it won’t fit in the cupboard!
Regards the media player, i may hold off for now until i’ve got a new TV etc. The main thing is getting the data outlets wired in and all connected, any media device i decide to get (if any) can be bought once i’ve more idea of what exactly i intend to do. If i go the way of a NAS i will still need to factor in a media streaming device such as the WD, console or squeezebox , that too will be an additional cost.

Been giving this some thought this week.
I’m going to get a NAS as well as a switch and have those and the router based under the stairs. I currently use the space for storage for tools, hoover etc but once the work is done I’ll have additional space for that stuff so it seems an ideal place to keep all my “data” gizmos!
I’m looking at something like the sqeezebox now for my music streaming; something that’s independent from the TV (the mede8er would have mean’t the TV being on every time i wanted to listen to music) and easy to locate anywhere. I would like to have music streamed into the bathroom but i think the only way i’ll achieve this is to place a squeezebox type device on the landing and put some waterproof/steamproof speakers in the bathroom ceiling! I like the look of the squeezebox touch and may eventually have some of those around the house; one in the kitchen/diner (extension) feeding into my logitech z5500’s would certainly liven up making the dinner though at £250 a time i’ll have to make those gradual purchases 😯 .
I understand that if i use squeezebox i’ll need to install some software onto the NAS, i’m assuming it’s not difficult to do this?
Regards the sky tv. I’m just going to run a single line from the box to the extension and utilise the RF2 on the sky box to feed the picture to the TV in the extension, i think with a magic eye type device i could still change channels as and when i want. What i am doing is running co-ax from the Aerial in the loft via a booster to all the rooms, that way i can at least hook up a freeview TV where i please. Also, i’m going to put an FM antenna in the loft and run down a single line to the TV as that is where my AV receiver will be and they normally have radio tuners built in. That reminds me, i need to take some power up to the loft so i may “cut” into the ring circuit in the bedrooms and take a leg up there (keep it as part of the ring circuit rather than as a single spur) so that i can power the booster and possibly any speakers i decide to put in the bathroom ceiling.
When i go to buy my AV receiver, dvd and TV, i’ll going to see which ones are capable of being connected into a network and see if any are capable of streaming media from the NAS, that would be the perfect setup as i wouldn’t need a standalone product such as the mede8er to play any films i have on storage.
I currently use my Z5500’s as my main speaker set up in my front room and they’ve been fantastic (cheers pharty) but i’m hoping to have an AV receiver and connect up a 5.1 or 6.1 speakers when all the work is done. What i’m thinking of doing is having the speakers at the side of the sofa connected via a outlet on the wall; that way i can run the speaker wires under the floor and terminate them in a plate both by the receiver and by the speakers, it would then be a case of plugging the speakers into the wall outlet and the receiver into the wall outlet.
Apologies for the rambling but at least if i put all this down somewhere i hopefully won’t forget what i have to do and i may also get some useful feedback from you chaps who know about this stuff much more than i do!
