Well I was after a critisism of the mixdown not neccesarily the song as its old and was made as an album filler. Although you do have a point insane and those Ows are a bit too many but the problem is they bought the tune like that so Im limited to remastering the original and not really pissing about with it too much. (Ill take some out of the middle instrumental I think).
LeGIt not liking it was the best critisism I could possibly get from him 😛 . If it grows on you m8 then thats probably why the ad agency chose it. We have had an agent out in the states since we signed to Ignition back in 2000. The only other thing we almost had was a tune in a Vin Deasel film called ‘A Man Apart’ or something like that but this sock it to em tune was used on the superbowl recently so i presume it must be up there with the american marketing tastes. Its a shame that Ignition never did their job properly but at least this agent has.
Tune was done with Akai s2000 a pc running cubase vst 3 for hard disk recording and good ole fashioned instruments ;). The main samples came from a tape I made when I was 15 of the Monteray pop festival off the radioheres a newer mix:

Can’t describe really how, maybe it’s tinny or metallic (the element not the genre) whatever you want to call it, but it doesn’t sound half as good as the first you posted 🙄 It seems a fair bit quieter too… and maybe the tempo has changed by 0.0001%? 🙁 The loudness of the other had a punch like brass instruments should do!!
I think the problem is as the times have changed maybe your tastes and styles have changed too, so you can’t replicate the mindset you was in when you originally made it for a remaster that would do it justice.
They bought it as is, don’t be a George Lucas bastardising things which were acceptable; you already got their cash so no need to break your balls updating it?
October 18, 2006 at 3:10 am #35535xdc the docParticipantFantastic work m8 – you must be proud as punch.
October 18, 2006 at 10:08 am #35536XDCsPUNKerParticipantbe proud when the cheque comes in m8 😉
As for LeGit. The last mix is the most ‘Every stereo I can get my hands on’ friendly whereas the other one would get too distorted and the whole point was to give it more deffenition. The americans can always turn the tone down a bit if its too tinny (they also wont be getting a compressed mp3 version of the song!).
And my tastes are the same now as they were then. If anything Ive gone back to listening to more garage punk! 😉October 18, 2006 at 3:25 pm #35537XDCMunkeeParticipantseems grainy round that bass line, the frequencys seems to be clashing here and there. maybe run it through some decent eqs and try and clean out the frequencies, remove a bit of the distortions on the bass and trim your high hats.
you got any decent valve compression emulation software?
dunno mate its hard to see how to improve it without knowing whats going on with the perticuler parts.
listning through again.
yeah the main issue seems to be the grittyness to the sound of that bass, some of the levels seem a bit off as well and there seems to be some clipping but im not sure.
the low bottom end might need clearing up, listning through headphones though but the sub end the frequencies seem muffled.
il check through my tonnoys later. 🙂
October 18, 2006 at 3:31 pm #35538XDCsPUNKerParticipantwhich version u talking about munkee the 1st one i posted or the second?
October 18, 2006 at 3:32 pm #35539XDCMunkeeParticipantfirst
diddnt know there was a second, er hang on
October 18, 2006 at 3:34 pm #35540XDCMunkeeParticipantok lets start again 🙂
ok second version is alot clearer.
gonna listen a few times see if i can pick anything out 🙂
October 18, 2006 at 3:40 pm #35541XDCsPUNKerParticipant😉
October 18, 2006 at 3:41 pm #35542XDCMunkeeParticipantok, the track seems slightly biased to the high frequencys this time, you cleaned it up alot from the last version but maybe a bit too much.drums could maybe be a bit more punchy in the mid, thay sound ok in the intro though so there might be a slight frequency clash with somthing else in there when the main track comes in.
big improvment on the original clip though. you tried running it through some tv speakers? if it sounds sharp and clear through them you should be fine. maybe run it through a valve compresser or valve emulation vst. it should bring some of the warmth back into it.
the levels seem alot better,
somthing seems to stutter at 3.38, sounds like a misstimed hit.
October 18, 2006 at 3:42 pm #35543XDCMunkeeParticipantyou got an analoge mixer or anything?
October 18, 2006 at 3:49 pm #35544XDCMunkeeParticipantam i ok to have a little play with some of my eqing software?
October 18, 2006 at 3:54 pm #35545XDCsPUNKerParticipantI think its the sample at that point that has beats behind it and as its spartan and I didnt want to butcher it too much you can notice because of the high tone. I could add some warmth back in to it but I didnt want to risk getting it muggy again and they can reduce some tone and get some form of warm eq when they do their sound mix. Its like it is in the sound bussiness; better working with something that has been recorded too quiet than something that has been recorded too loud. same applies with tone. To be honest apart from the sennheiser headphones IM actually currently working with the crappy logitec pc speakers as monitors as my yamaya sn10’s are packed up in a box somewhere and I aint been able to find em yet 😕
will perhaps do a slightly warmer mix once I reinstall everything again after my crappy crash tother day.
thanks for the crits so far 😉October 18, 2006 at 4:00 pm #35546XDCMunkeeParticipantno probs mate, just had a little play useing the eqs on my emu 1212. got it ssoundinga bit fatter but for some reason i carnt get it to rout the output to soundforge properly, it dosent record the eqing 😕
if you can get somthing like t racks you can add a nice bit of emulation valve compression, not as good as the waves plugins i dont think but nevermind.
Always wanted to get myself a powercore but never had the money, thay come with really nice eqing vsts. might be worth a look when you money comes through.October 18, 2006 at 4:03 pm #35547XDCMunkeeParticipantiv got the clips now, was chaining the send at the wrong point. 😳 2 secs and i’ll get the clips uploaded.
