Please spec me a fully working PC which I can buy new for less than £279, which will play all these games in DX 11.

I am using this top range PS3 as comparrison. I am sure I can find one cheaper, but think you need as much help as possible.

Extra points if you can get a Blu Ray Player in there.

    Many thanks in advance

You are right, you probably can’t get a top of the range gaming PC for £280, that’s why I said £350 and that the prices were comparable (factor a few games in) not exact. Squabling over £70 is a waste of time, considering the product you’d got for £350 is worth far more than the extra £70 you pay over and above a PS3.

Whilst I conceed the point that for people not willing to splash out an initial £70 and would rather be raped far far more for game within the 1st 6 months probably would be better with a console, anyone who has any sense would buy a PC. It’s gotten to the stage of the argument that no matter how many valid points both myself and Matt make, you both are too stubborn, as we are, to accept each others view point. I know me and matt are right, the prices are comparable, especially with a few games. I know me and matt are right that the PC is far better value for money. I know we are right when talking about the graphical performance you would expect per £ spent.

I unerstand if you want to chill in front of the TV, play a few games with mates, the PC is not the solution. I understand that devs are pouring more money into the lowest common denominator that is the console market, but that doesn’t mean it’s a superior platform. I’m sure if we hadn’t got to this stage, you may even be tempted to admit that.

Anywho, you arguments are all crap. When you pay for a console, you get 4 year old hardware producing 7 year old graphics. Pay a little more and you can get a modern gaming machine that is far more flexible.

I am still rather confused as to how you can make a top of the range PC for £350… I spent twice that last year (and tbh really couldnt see much difference in what I had before!).

At no point have I said that a console is superior, merely pointed out that:

    A) Its cheaper. Yes games are usually around £5 more expensive, so I would have to buy 14 before I hit you £70 extra expense threshold… although you mention you have bought most of your games on Steam – good luck selling them! suddenly the 3 games I own are worth more than all yours put together! I assume (but may be wrong) that a PS3 holds its value more than a PC does too

    B) Consoles are more userfriendly – its no secret that I am a bit of a retard when it comes to computers (blew my first one up on the second day of owning it!). I can sit down, start the PS3, be playing in minutes – no problem. It took me half an hour to get my mic to work the other day. Some stupid TS3 option where I could alter my inputs… surely in this day and age it should literally plug and play?

    C) More social – Good entertainment with mates round and beers

    D) Quieter

    E) Less intense

You have largely agreed with A and C, (while B, D and E are based on personal preference). I cannot see how you can conclude that my arguments are crap!

I would also like to add the following which are preferable for me:

    – Everyone has the same kit: you dont get some kid with an ultra fast rig capping all the flags before you enter the game
    – Less likely for games to be hacked (although I understand it is possible)

    Thanks for reading 🙂

Well first of all we’re not talking about an absolute top of the range PC in this thread, we’re talking about an alternative for those on a stricter budget, such as would be the case for someone here considering a console over a PC for example. Also let me stress that this is a very quick search, based on the research I put in when specing my own upgrade, but below is a complete package in the range of £350:

CPU, Motherboard, and RAM – £131

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-640-3-0-Quad-Core-CPU-2GB-DDR3-Motherboard-Bundle-/360312919170?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item53e452d482

    GFX – £105

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Point-View-GeForce-GTX460-768Mb-Cuda-3D-HDMI-BNIB-/260700388968?pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item3cb2f43e68

    PSU – £15

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/600W-Quiet-Silent-ATX-PC-Power-Supply-Unit-PSU-600-Watt-/360322829983?pt=UK_Computing_PowerSupplies_EH&hash=item53e4ea0e9f

    Hardrive – £32

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-206-SE

    Case – £30

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mars-Red-PC-Gaming-Case-Side-Window-Dual-Fan-Cooling-/220699146760?pt=UK_Computing_DesktopComponents_RL&hash=item3362b1ba08

    Blueray player – £42

    http://cgi.ebay.com/LG-4x-Blu-Ray-Combo-BD-ROM-Player-DVD-Burner-SATA-Drive-/260587479148?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item3cac39606c

    Total – £355

Now I haven’t taken postage into consideration for the total cost, but allow me that because this was a quick search, and I deliberately choose brand new products to avoid any arguments about quality. I also chose buy it now prices but think you could get some of these components cheaper if you had the patience to enter an auction (I saw an auction on ebay.com earlier for the GTX 460 for example at two thirds the cost above). I’ve also chosen products that will give you the best bang for your buck (the gfx card in particular), and you could chose cheaper options for less longevity. It’s also worth noting that most people here would have a capable PSU, Case, HD, and DVD drive which could be used to save yourself what amounts to a third of the overall cost. The above rig will run everything today at top settings.

Your points regarding user friendliness are valid, but again we’re talking to a competent audience here, and as we’ve said before, if you can do it, anyone can 🙂

Your point about noise, I just don’t get though. I’ve never had an issue with the sound my PC makes, and it has never struck me as being louder than any consoles I’ve heard on. Clean your fans I think.

The intense statement is bizarre. What is it you mean by that? I take it you must be comparing some first person shooters, and perhaps it’s an intense level of concentration you’re referring to, but there are simpler games out there if that’s what you’re after.

The last two statements are also reasonably true, but you really need to be lagging far behind in technology for a high end machine to have any sort of gameplay advantage over you. Most decent games these days also incorporate a timer at the start of a round, which allows for slower PCs to load before the round actually starts. Games do get hacked, but that’s a cross platform problem, and while it’s probably more prevelant on the PC, you’ll not have any real issues if the game’s well supported.

hmm maybe we should each take our own transcript of this debate to a pub, show it to all the birds, and see who gets the most sex.

You could probably calculate that on the PC better than the PS3… I will give you that much!

Lol, I will stick with my original plan for picking up loose women in pubs. All i need to do is take screen prints of my creations in minecraft and sit and explain to the women how complicated they are and I’m basically garaunteed sex. They will be gushing torrents as soon as I show them the screen shot.

Agreed, Minecraft could be seriously awesome if and when they get multiplayer working properly 🙂 I can’t wait, but they need to make it properly adversarial with a huge focus on pvp.
