this is one of those books that i have been meaning to read for years and finally got around to it.

    wow

this is an amazing book – naturally i have picked up most of the plot outline and sound bites as so many parts of this book are now part of our culture but it was good to read it properly.

given that it was written back in 1948 it is impressive the developments that Orwell saw coming. I think what would have scared the crap out of him the most is the realization that a lot of the ‘bad’ things he saw coming have come about in under a democratic system of government and not under a communist regime. in particular the use of Double-speak just about sums up our approach to politicians. they know they are lying, we know they are lying but we will move forward as if they were telling the truth! madness.

Superb book – agree 100% Should be required reading for all school kids. The most amusing part for me is his ‘crazeee’ vision of a nightmarish surveillance society.

“The average citizen in the UK is caught on CCTV cameras 300 times a day.” Source – BBC.

Excellent book, I watched the film for the first time a few weeks ago, and despite the male full frontal nudity it was still a bloody depressing film. It makes me want to read Animal Farm again – but I don’t ever want to watch that film! Is it really a film, or an urban myth?

I watched part of the documentary, but it was a bit toooo weird a story for me to watch it all, very fucked up.

i take it you’re refering to the “other” animal farm film there Tess ? It does indeed exist and though i haven’t seen it and have no intention to do so, a few mates have and the things they’ve told me about it is enough reason for me not to bother……….vic may be interested though 😀

I would have read 1984, but I’m not really into historical dramas.

I like to hold a book as I read it, I have never really managed to read much of anything online, I always end up printing things out.

It started out as sci-fi, does that help? 😀

Sorry Stan, just stealing somebody else’s joke about the comic ‘2000AD’. 🙂

I’ve seen the movie Brazil (one of my faves) so I’ll stick with that version of 1984. 😉
