Watched this last night. Well worth watching. True story about a drug dealer who becomes bigger than the mafia in the seventies. 9/10

October 26, 2007 at 5:13 pm #61086dodgeParticipantYes denzil at his best again. 😀
October 26, 2007 at 7:54 pm #61087SeedubsParticipantNot Bad 8/10.
January 13, 2008 at 10:39 pm #61088XDC Erratic-SpaceParticipantEnjoyed it, well worth a pop. And not really what I was expecting either. A lil’ different to the normal gangster crime movies you normally get.
January 13, 2008 at 11:11 pm #61089XDCJuDgE-MenTaLParticipantYea I quite liked it not a bad film at all.
Personally I think Denzel is slightly one dimensional and generally out of his depth in villan leads (see Training Day), so I would suspect his inclusion was a “bums on seats” decision rather than a “justice to the role” one. Laurence Fishburne would have done a better job I reckon.
Yea best stick to your quirky cop/lawyer roles mate.
January 14, 2008 at 8:11 am #61090XDCiNSANEParticipantHe was ace in Training Day.. top film
January 14, 2008 at 1:20 pm #61091KippoParticipantI did like this film, but I didn’t think it was as good as all the hype suggested. I say the same thing about the Godfather though 😉
Martin Scorsese does the best gangster films, Goodfellas and the Departed rocked.
January 14, 2008 at 6:56 pm #61092XDC Erratic-SpaceParticipantYeah I felt that about The Godfather. Went out and brought the trilogy and kinda wish I hadn’t. Although someone else pinched it and I’ve not got it n’more. Goodfellas on the other hand is a class film I’m able to watch again and again. It’s gotta be one of my faves.
January 14, 2008 at 11:57 pm #61093XDCJuDgE-MenTaLParticipantexactly why Denzel was out of his depth in this role, look at any other gangster films such as
Goodfellas
Casino
Once upon a time in Americaproper gangster films with actors that can do a proper “evil scary bastard” the same goes for The Sopranos..sorry but Denzel is about as intimidating as a blackcurrant jellybaby and the role demands otherwise (also applies to Training Day which was ok and not ace) :).
Robert de Niro, Joe Pesci, James Gandolfini even Gary Oldman, = 😈
Denzel Washington = 😡January 15, 2008 at 7:48 am #61094XDCiNSANEParticipantAh I see.. I didnt realise he was supposed to be an Italian Mafia boss.. In that case, yeah he does suck!
Oh and I cant believe all your camp points and not one mention of the best gangster actor in history.. Sir Al Pachino
Hang your head in shame.. or even better, stand infront of this assault rifle…
January 15, 2008 at 6:36 pm #61095XDCJuDgE-MenTaLParticipantMy point wasn’t that he should have been Italian (although Frank Lucas was at one time part of the Sicilian Mob), I was using those films as examples of more convincing actors playing villan roles, in this case Gangster…..thats it…..nothing else.
Gary Oldman isn’t Italian and Al Pacino goes without saying…..btw. (hang your head in shame for not even spelling the mans name right)
evil cnut
Mr “one trick pony” Nice guy
January 16, 2008 at 8:03 am #61096XDCiNSANEParticipant*Hangs head in shame*
Ah.. seeing his real piccy.. I see what you mean *hangs head in shame for not googling image*
Laurence would have been good for looks fo sure.. maybe forrest whittaker also.. he can play a mean mo fo 🙂I still dont think DW is a OTP.. Man on Fire is one of the best films in history and he was brill in Training day etc etc
January 16, 2008 at 6:37 pm #61097XDCJuDgE-MenTaLParticipantYea I’ll give ya Man on Fire, did like that film. 🙂
Yea Forrest Whitaker too, dunno if anyone watches “The Shield” but he was awesome in Season 5, totally stole the show.
