Alex (automatic meat) and I have been getting back into this recently, after kicking our world of tanks habit, and I have to say we’re having an absolute blast again, rustiness aside. It’s disappointing more XDC haven’t picked this up because it’s potentially the perfect game for a group like ours, who’re generally focused on teamwork, but I suspect the futuristic setting put many people off plus we had a rough time of it when learning the game during early beta which didn’t help either. The game’s brilliant though, and while it’s quite different from BF in how the battles flow, the developers are entirely correct to call this Battlefield’s bigger brother in their recent adverts, which you might have seen on tv. You can play the game like BF games, running and gunning, or you can play any number of supporting roles where your efforts are just as important, if not more so than any similar role in BF3. For example an engineer in this game is actually useful as a team player, rather than an alternative combat class as it is in BF3, and a medic’s role is essential to a group’s efforts, in contrast to just being a secondary ability for assault in BF3, yet both classes have great guns as well in PS2 and can hold their own in a fight as well as they can in BF3.

I could go on all day tbh about this game, but as this is already a longer post than I planned let me just point out again that this game is free to download and play from here : https://www.planetside2.com/ and you literally don’t have to pay a penny to play this. It’s the perfect pick up and play game as well which is kinda how Alex and I have treated it over the last year since it was released, and it’s constantly under development with many new features coming in future patches. If you do want to join us, give me a shout on steam or ts, but if I’m not available then the servers we’re playing certain factions on are listed below:

    Vanu Sovereignty – Ceres
    Terran Republic – Woodman
    New Conglomerate – Miller

Now is also the perfect time to try it with BF4 just around the corner, so you could use this to kill the time until then, although you’ll likely still find me on this game even then as BF4 is really not looking too attractive atm to me (never thought I’d be saying that).

go on then, been playing a few different games recently in the void between BF3 & 4…..far cry looks a pretty game, but it’s just wank

I may try it again, just thought the Beta was a bit wank and it put me off.

Really?? 😯 The beta of BF4 looks and plays better imho, then any previous version plus commander mode is back – im suprised mate.

Unfortunately (and ironically) i’m allowing my experience of the beta to affect my priorities right now but i’ve also just moved into a house where those i’m sharing with are constantly streaming shit which is bearable in ps2 at times but would be intolerable for bf4. If the performance issues are sorted out in bf4, and I get a second line installed here for my own internet, then i’ll probably get it.

Once you have this installed beer, give me a shout on ts or steam and i’ll help guide you through the setup and show you roughly what’s going on. The game is simple but it can seem a little daunting at first

Oh and if anyone does try this and can’t wait until others are about before jumping in, make sure that when you select a faction to also pick the server we’re playing on, as listed in the op. Unless you do that we can’t link up. As a guide maybe to what faction to choose, note that new conglomerate are hard hitters at close range with low rate of fire and inaccuracy as trade offs for the extra punch, vanu are the opposite, and are probably the best gateway to the game for a bf player (at least in my opinion). Terran are a half way house and totally playable for a bf player with recoil control already learned and this is what alex and I have been playing most of lately, although we both have mid level vanu characters as well and i’m certainly happy to continue along with that faction.

In summary, we play vanu on ceres, terran on woodman, and nc on miller.

I’d add that Terran seem to be in a fairly good place at the moment balance-wise, while NC are struggling.

We also joined a pretty large outfit on our Terran chars which means we’re usually in a (semi) organised platoon.
