‘ArmA’ Armed Assault: Noob Guide

Here’s some Controls and voting/admin info for ArmA noobs. OFP players may or may not know it all already. Worth checking though, right? 😉 Voting/admin skillz are essential in ArmA; forget about EA Games voting.

CONTROLS

Apart from the basics like forwards, fire, lean and walk/run, the following controls should be considered essential.

* Next
* Previous
* Perform Action

“Help, I’m stuck in the car!” and eleventy-billion other panics:
You need to activate the context menu which appears in the bottom right of the screen when you press any of the above keys.

* Evasive Forwards

Temporary sprint. Can’t keep up? Got a long way to go? Clearing a town and u need to dash over the road?

*Car Fast Forwards

Like sprinting but with a vehicle. I set it to the same key as sprinting. One key, two jobs 🙂

* Freelook

* Lock or Zoom

Most of the time you can Zoom to peer closely into the distance, even when scoped on some weapons.

* Gear

Your inventory.

* Toggle Weapons

Cycle through your gear for main weapons and satchel charges.

* Switch weapons

Switch between two main weapons e.g. rifle and binocs, or rifle and bazooka.

* Switch Gun / Handgun

Quick access to the pistol. The pistol is effective. When u run out of ammo on your main gun in a tight situation, you ARE Clint Eastwood.

* Hold Breath

For those long-range shots, not for swimming. If you swim, you risk having to (automatically) drop heavy weapons in the water.

*Next Channel
*Previous Channel

Comms channels. The dead players (seagulls) can only communicate on the Global channel. Often the living players will be in Side or Team channel and the dead guy can’t read their messages. It can be very lonely that way. You only need one of the Channel buttons cos it cycles round. Each channel has a separate text colour.

*Chat

Default is the / key. Half the new players can’t find it 🙂

*Toggle View

Required for checking out the XDC logo on your vehicle. Some vehicles have 3 view modes instead of ‘normal’ 2. Keep pressing that key to get where u want to be. In conjunction with *Freelook control, gives different behaviours. Simple 😀

Lifestyle Control

Not essential, but add these in when you’re comfortable with the essentials. You’ll feel left out during those ‘hurry up and wait’ periods if u can’t jive with the homies.

VOTING – YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS

* Number One top tactic: –
If you’re having hassles on a non-adminned server, join an empty one and make yourself admin before anyone else joins.

If a server gets stuck or whatever, an admin can usually kick it into restarting or whatever. If it’s gone wrong and there’s no admin, chances are the voting mechanism is tits-up and you’re wasting your time there.

Voting and adminning is done in chat. Commands are preceeded by the # character.

Normal user commands

#userlist
shows u player IDs. They can be simpler than typing in complex names.

#vote admin /
vote for a decent admin, who knows what’s what. If you’re in-game, you can’t tell if the vote was successful. The clue is when you find that any further voting doesn’t register on the server.

#vote restart
The mission is fucked or some last-man lamer has gone joy-riding to another town…

#vote missions
Everyone wants to change mission (that’s ‘map’ in SuperMarioField2142)

#Vote reassign
Like restart. It may move the server onto another mission if it’s set to cycle. Then again, it might be restart that does that sometimes…

#vote kick /
Yeah!

Admin commands

The only safe way to stop adminning. Leaving the server whilst admin can trip it up.

When patch v1.05 comes out soon, the server stability should be markedly improved.

RADIO

I haven’t got a clue about the radio 😳 but it’s important, especially if you need a medic, ammo or repairs. An AI or player might help ya.

Function keys, Backspace and the numbers control the radio. There’s a tutorial on it but I haven’t done it yet.
