Ok we’re not missing the boat this time, bf3 is going to be big and from the 25th October, iirc the release, we’ll have a server. Now the question is who will be helping support it initially. I’m renting via rackage, because they’re good and will also give us a match server free along with initial sub period. I’d like to take a twelve month lease but it might be too much for one go, but six is definitely doable. Ultimately the period will depend on how good a vibe I get from the beta but who can commit to helping will also affect the decision. It’s safe to assume we’ll recruit out of this but we have to see what we can support for now. Approx cost per month for a thirty two man server will be thirty quid a month. If you can help towards this let me know. If you want to keep the amount private, pm me.

I’ll edit this later when not on my phone.

So, BF3 kicks off in just over a week. Any decision on if we are gonna invest in a server and if so from where?

This is on the todo list for this week. At the moment I’m just home in Belfast with limited time to spend online, but I intend on having this sorted within the next few days, as I’ll be back in Edinburgh tomorrow and off work until after the weekend.

When I made this post I was on verge of just renting a server but I couldn’t decide how on how long a lease. This thread hasn’t really helped much with that decision, so what I’ll do is check what’s in the bank when I’m back tomorrow afternoon, and work out what’s initially affordable from that.

I’m already decided on using Rackage as our provider, as they’ve been the most reliable for us, and the service Gonzo provides us is second to none.

I need to work out how to best manage donations for this as well, which is why I’ll pick up the initial bill, but will then take donations towards it’s running and keep any surplus until the initial lease is up. I’ve a few ideas how to manage the donations but I’ll have to work out the best way when I’m back in Edinburgh with all my banking details to hand.

    OK, fair enough.

Had a gander at the servers from rackage. 3 month contract, 32 player server with 15 slot TS3 server (you get a 10 slot server for free…..but is it enough), works out at :

    £72.00
    Teamspeak 3 Voice Servers – 15 slots @ £0.20 £9.00
    Free Teamspeak 3 Voice Servers discount – 10 slots @ £0.20-£6.00
    Order discount @ 10.00%-£7.50
    Total Charge £67.50

I’ll commit to buying a month worth, so a 3rd of the total cost upfront, then we can see in 3 months time how to proceed or even if it’s worth carrying on the contract.
I guess if we get enough interest/contributions we could go for the cheaper per month 6 month contract, which works out at £21.50 a month.

The plan was to fork out for it over the weekend, but I forgot to take into account Sod’s Law. I had fraud on my bank account, my card was cancelled, and I decided against putting the payment on a credit card in the meantime. I have however received my replacement debit card today, so stay tuned for more on this later tonight.
