For the first time in my life I’m considering buying an OS, since my LeGit-esque copy of XP is slowly dying and my build disk isn’t playing ball. I’m thinking about getting an OEM copy of Vista (I’m not sure about ultimate or business), is it worth it right now? Basically I’ll be rebuilding the machine in the next week or two.

I’ll be sticking Linux on it too, but I’ll need an M$ OS for gaming etc.

    Advice appreciated.

No.. wait till ServicePack is out that fixes it 🙂

From the looks of half your posts your always having issues with your PC, therefore I would avoid Vista for that reason alone, It probably wont help

Well my ‘LeGit’ copy of XP doesn’t allow me to do automatic updates, which is an awful pain, so I doubt that my current OS is up to speed, which is probably a major contributor to my problems. Alas, now I’m a married man I can’t spend hours online tracking down all the latest patches, so I’m resigned to letting my OS do that for me.

I could buy XP OEM, but I’d rather future proof my system with an OS that’ll be around for the next 3 or 4 years. Any idea when the service pack for Vista will be out?

I find Vista perfectly ok nowadays I have just as many problems with XP as I do with Vista so to me there’s no real difference.

Yup, mine works a treat, had no issues with it, from what i can see – most driver fixes are there, etc,

Cheers Signal & Ryzo. Another thing to consider would be 32 or 64 bit?

Trouble is my PC is so out of date I think that half the problems I have are from bizarre hardware conflicts. I used to upgrade my PC every six months, but these days I just don’t have the money.

I might just splurge on a new system and to hell with the debt.

If you do ever come to the choice of 32 or 64, i would of said 32 – as with 64 – the OS can benefit from higher ram modules, but, 32 – you know that most games, programs, etc are going to run usually (and hopefully) without a Hitch, where as on 64 , im not sure on compatability – some games just dont like it, same goes for XP – but dont quote me on that, as i say,i hvnt used 64, so i stick with 32, more comofrtable with it mate

I’m going the opposite way to Ryzo as I’ll vouch for 64bit, what’s the point having a 64bit processor and not running a 64bit OS??.

Yes you have to download different versions of programs but I use my pc for Gaming(when BF2142 runs) and mostly films music downloading the usual stuff and I’m running Vista Ultimate 64bit and don’t have any problems.

Some older games/programs don’t work but to be honest I can’t be arsed with most of them and if I ever felt the need I would just repartition and stick a copy of XP on anyway and run a dual boot.

    Anyway that’s me tuppence.

    fnarr fnarr.

Seriously though, if you people can’t even pick up on that and make puerile jokes about porn and the internet then there is no hope.

F’s all round, and that includes you nerdy studenty types as well.

    Must try harder.

I have to sadly agree with Insane here 😆 For the time being I would opt for 32bit XP SP2. I have vista running on a laptop with not problems at all however it is not compatible with all games and some just point blank refuse to run even some of the newer ones. I use the laptop for Apps etc and although I do have few games installed that is not the primary use of the laptop I have an XP PC for that and most games are written with XP in mind.

With regards to 64bit Processor / OS debate this is fine if all your applications are written to utilise the 64 bit processor sadly whilst some are written specifically to make use of the processor the majority are written for XP 32bit which is by far the uniform platform on most peoples machines. Same for Games there are very few that make use of 64 bit processors.

You could also and the dual/quad core processors into this too as a general rule as most software will only utilise a single core although you can tweak some apps to utilise multiple cores is you want to. Multi Core CPU’s only really come into their own when you are multitasking with several apps running simultaneously and utilising the additional available cores. Some newer titles coming down the line will make better use of Vista and Multi Core CPU’s and GPU’s- Crysis springs to mind but there are others too.

However unless you hardware is pretty much bang up to date then your not going to see the benefit.

Stick with XP until SP1 for Vista is out (end of this year I think?)

I agree with Lammie I think once SP1 is out hopefully Vista will be fairly good and were also waiting on Nvidia and ATi correcting and fully implementing their video drivers, that is where a big part of the problem is from what I have read. I am upgrading my pc next month and would love to put vista on it, but probably have more joy and everything work correctly if I just stick to XP SP2 for now.

As to Neo’s thing about windows update not working. There is a program which you can get of the newsgroups/torrents which is released each month and it contains every single windows update for XP ever since it was released and you can look at each one and choose which ones to install. Obviously updates like Windows Media player 11 and IE7 require the std actviation but you can get cracks to by pass that easily enough.

I cant remember what the program is called though 🙁 sorry. somethign like Windows patch update or something. may be one of you guys have come across this program.

just download and install a dodgy copy of vista and see how it goes – i belive you get 30 days trial even if you dont crack it – then you can try your games / apps out and see if it is a goer.
