ok so I am so stoked that I can finally play BFBC2 that I spend most of my spare minutes playing… which kinda put off the little nag in the back of my head that said “If your main graphics card just narrowly avoided death by over heat you should really check the other graphics cards”
so.. Riley is playing spore.. which for the 1st time ever BSODs on him… he is not impressed.,, at which point the girls decide to own up that “yeh it did that on sims the other day” WOMEN!!
so i reboot to take a look… at this point we are not getting artefacts on the bios screen… oh oh
sure enough after attacking the gf8800gtx with a screw driver the air intake for this is also blocked and i am guessing thermal protection is not one of its strong points… it looks like it is dead and I have so very grumpy kids.. no one wants to use the 3rd PC (p4 2.8 / ati x800) cos it is so crap and now the 2nd pc is dead.. it is going to be a grumpy household till i get this sorted..
moral of this tale CHECK YOUR GPU COOLERS FIR DUST NOW FOLKS
Lol – my crappy case design meant I had to remove my GFX card to get in to the hard drives – and there was a fair bit of dust over the fans and intakes – not as bad as your dual card on your main PC mind 🙂
My next PC is gonna have proper airflow and dust catching vents in it.
Liking my new 10000rpm hard drive though…. next best thing to an SSD for sure.
a can of compressed air is every pc gamers best friend. once a month blow out all the coolers/fans and air intakes and it will be fine. the can of air will last about 6 months and costs around £7 which in my book is a cheap way of looking after your pc.

Hah – I did buy compressed air once – using it on the innards of an old PC it suddenly started dripping liquid on the motherboard!!!! Must have been the propellant leaking out. Never used the stuff since ( though obviously if you just stick to the vents from the outside you should be safe enough.)
Usually i am pretty good at cleaning my PC’s – but the case on this one is a bit shite.. not helped by my latest PSU which has stupidly thick and badly placed power cables fucking up the airflow.
sounds like you had a dodgy can of air Doc.
also if you do use compressed air you should make sure everything is powered down and wait 10 minutes befor you turn it back on.
i cleaned my pc last night and the amount of dust and crap was ridiculous. it doesnt help that i have 2 cats and i smoke but hey 🙂
Hehe, I’ve seen some pretty filthy PC’s in my time. The worst one was my previous liquid cooled one. I put it in a Thermaltake armour case (never buy another thermaltake case) with £350 of watercooling equipment for my CPU and GPU, was awesome, overclocked my Q6600 to 4Ghz and my 8800GTX about 30% extra. Was really fast for the time. I built it with the idea I would use less fans, but ended up have so many fans in it, to cool the radiator, I had fans to cool the ram so I could run the FSB at 400mhz etc. Had even more exhaust fans to keep a negative air pressure inside the case etc.
Anyway, when I came to dismatle and sell my PC, the inside of it was thick with brown dust (I was a filthy smoker for a number of years). From then on in, I’ve spent the money for good cases with filters etc. Currently running a antec P182 case, with noise reducing materials and filters on all intakes. Just needs to wash the filters once every few months.
Cans of compressed air do drip liquid if they are nearing empty or if you use them in any other position than vertical, and yes, make sure the pc is powered down, no need to wait 10 minutes though, the liquid evaporates in seconds.
Once every 12 months is fine, unless you smoke a lot in the room, then i,d say every six months.
