I know there are a few Civ fans about here, so just a heads up that Civ 5’s due for release in September. May be old news for some, but I just noticed it advertised on Steam 🙂

None of the above is really relevant to me as I’ve never been let down by a Civ title, so I’ll be getting it regardless. The only concern atm seems to be that there will be DLC available to buy, but so long as this doesn’t affect multiplayer, I don’t care.
Anyone else likely to get this?

Whats MP like?
May 8, 2010 at 7:33 pm #76251AlzirKeymasterIt’s pretty hard from what I played a long time ago. Previous versions weren’t really optimised for online play, and used gamespy which had a lot of problems with people playing behind a router. This one is the first release in quite a number of years, so I’ve great hopes for multiplayer. It’s the sort of game you need a few hours to play though. That means it’s always difficult finding players willing to stick it out, especially when they start badly, but the AI’s always provided a good challenge (and it takes over when a player drops), and even coop online is pretty good.
May 9, 2010 at 10:13 am #76252TurksMeisterParticipantIts turn based, which can get boring when playing multiplayer… I had it (Civ 4) on the PS3 (now stolen!) and it was pretty good but the AI was pants, and it got really boring towards the end of the game when constantly moving troops around the map.
May 9, 2010 at 1:49 pm #76253SilverSidesParticipantAlzir i had no idea civ5 was in development, nice one.
Doc Civilisation is basically fancy pants chess, you need time and patentience. If you have both and like statagy then the Civ games are the best out there imo, i’d rate the original Civ game as an all time favorite, but it did make me an unsocial bastard for days on end 😳
Just last week d2d website had the entire Civ4 collection including Colonisation remake on sale for a fiver which i duely bought, an absolute bargain.
infact….

Playing multiplayer there are a number of options which deal with this, the most common being simultaneous turns, which can be set with a time limit, or otherwise. Normally online games progress at a decent pace since anyone playing online is comfortable with the game.

If you’re struggling for a challenge vs the computer, you’re either playing on Chieftain, or you’re a much better player than I’ve ever come across. Get yourself a copy for your PC, try Deity, then come back and say it’s not a challenge 😛
and it got really boring towards the end of the game when constantly moving troops around the map
Possibly you’re a lost cause, but normally you don’t have so much surplus that you’re moving units about with no purpose. The end game, when you’ve got modern units, is the best part of Civ 4.

I’d recommend you try Colonization Doc. Similar but I always preferred it to the Civilisation games and they updated it a year or so ago. You could probably get it on the cheap to see if it’s your kind of game.
May 10, 2010 at 3:07 pm #76256AlzirKeymasterI could also possibly (assuming my burner works) get you a copy of Civ 4 to try Doc, we could fire up a game online as well (maybe also with Turks?) since the new version’s likely to be similar.
I’ve never tried Colonisation, but might do on Silver and SOIA’s recommendation here. I was about 10 when the first Civ was out, and it was great for it’s time (remember Cavalry killing battleships ), but it’s steadily improved over the years, with the culture element they added in Civ 3 and the improved combat being the best changes. I was too addicted to Civ 1 in it’s day though to even contemplate getting Colonisation, even if I could have persuaded my folks to fork out for it.

I believe Civ 4 for the PS3 was a simplified game – It was piss easy on hard, as the CPU barely ever attacked. The maps were huge, so the end game involved sending hundreds of troops all over the map, and watching as they attached individually – v boring!
Would be up for getting it on PC, but games are too long and my gf uses up all my time! Need to get a cheap TV for my bedroom so she can watch shit on tv while I play!
May 10, 2010 at 5:04 pm #76258AlzirKeymasterBloody consoles, no good for anything other than football games, and I guess they have to dumb down games like this for the console market.

i used to loose whole night and never knew what happened.
June 17, 2010 at 1:26 pm #76261AlzirKeymasterSame here Andy, and no doubt it’ll happen again with this one. We’re on Civ 5 now, and none of the other titles in the series disappointed, with significant improvements in each edition. The combat system has always needed some loving from the developers though, and it’s good to see this is one of the key areas they’re marketing the game on.
September 18, 2010 at 9:34 pm #76262AlzirKeymasterJust preordered this on Steam. It’s out on Friday 🙂
September 20, 2010 at 2:21 pm #76263TurksMeisterParticipantAnd the second series of Glee is out on Tuesday – an excellent week for entertainment!
