I saw the ad last week Clerks II was being released on DVD on Monday and it looked interesting, but I didn’t know the original Clerks was made in 1994, so I got the pair.

Clerks starts off (in B&W) with some nice guy in his early twenties working a shitty job in an off licence of some kind. It basically follows the adventures of his every day life in a shit job; the muppets loitering, the advertisers, fussy customers, weirdos as well as the usual problems with the missus. Oh yeah and his friend who albeit funny, cheeky etc. has a way of getting him into shit 😛 Midway there is an interestinmg Star Wars debate… It ends on a bit of a funny but weird note, I don’t want to spoil it for you though!

Clerks II is set pretty much a decade later, with much of the same cast except with a different girlfirend this time… Same shit, different day – but this time in full colour and in a macdonalds style fast food chain. Muppets are still loitering, fussy customers are back and the weirdos just get weirder. Midway there is another interesting debate about another geeky film, this time it’s about Lord of the Rings. Another funny ending I don’t want to spoil – it was hard to top the last but they did it 😛

They both seem like low budget indie films, but Clerks II is definitely a fair bit more professional. I’d say you could watch Clerks II without ever watching the original and still enjoy it, there are not really any references to the original which need explaining, so you could just as easily watch it as a standalone. They’re not to everyones taste, there is a fair bit of swearing and talking and not too much actual action, but there is a fair amount of comedy provided you’re not easily offended 😛

If you liked the Clerks films you should check out Mall Rats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, but avoid Jay and Silent Bob strike back. All decent Kevin Smith films.
