KeymasterI’m getting seriously fed up with the tech support from Virgin media, and lost so much patience with them that changing tv, phone, and internet is starting to look like the easier option. I’m going to give them one last try though, but I want some ammunition to use next time I call. The problem is not with the download speed, which is fine, but the quality of connection is rubbish to game servers. My ping is regularly spiking, and at the best of times I’m experiencing door lag on UK servers. I daren’t even try even Euro servers because games become unplayable.
Now Virgin have run tests on my line several times and can’t find a problem. I’ve taken my router out of the equation and hardwired myself to the cable modem, with which they also can’t find a problem remotely. They’ve suggested spyware and viruses, but my computer’s clean, having been reformatted several times since this problem first came up. I’ve reformatted and reinstalled windows so much recently, that I’m blue in the face, and if they tell me it’s a virus one more time I’ll cancel my contract there and then.
Anyway, I’m running winmtr atm to google and virginmedia.com, and both routes are showing regular spikes across all hops, resulting in average pings across the board of 70ms. The best ping per hop is 15 on each hop, and the worst pings are fairly consistent per hop, ranging between 360 and 560ms. These results are typical of several routes I’ve traced over the past couple of weeks.
Now I’m not an expert, but does anyone else agree with me that this looks like an issue with their network? Also are there any other tests I can run to demonstrate the problem to them in terms they might actually understand?

KeymasterShould also add that packet loss is zero on all hops, with 2000+ packets sent per test.

KeymasterThere’s a limitation in winmrt in that it only shows the range of ping spikes, but doesn’t show the frequency of them. Does anyone know of a program that might show this, maybe in handy graphical form?

ParticipantI pay £10/month for 20mb broad band, with O2 (£15/m withought an O2 phone). Plus £10 ish for BT line.
It works really well.

KeymasterYea I’m considering other options, and while I’ve heard O2 are good, and I’ve got an O2 phone, I’m looking at Be There instead because they appear to be the best across the board atm (going by think broadband comparisons). The only problem is that I’ll have to pay an installation fee for a BT line which ever provider I choose, and I can’t really afford that kind of lump sum while in a flat I could potentially be moving out of soon.
Speaking of think broadband, Virgin Media has really dropped in standard according to their ratings lately, which is supported by my own experience with them. Their customer service too is awful, something that I might rate 1 out of 10, reflecting how many calls I had to make before I got someone who could tell me something useful.
