Participanthelp me!
I have had COD4 and crysis for 2 months now – unable to play either. After installing them neither will even load the startup screenn various error mesages (usually a no disk error for crysis, an application exception error for COD4) Strangely when I look in event viewer I cant pinpoint where the problem is coming from in either game.
All my drivers are now up to date (nightmare on dial up – thats why its taken me a while to get round to it) basically updated the graphics, audio and chipset. Turned off anti virus and firewall.
Graphics are ATI 1950, chip is intel core 2 duo. Windows XP MCE
Looking at the crysis log there seems to be something about cry render not working.

ParticipantPretty much the same problem I have with 2142/Crysis unfortunately for me the only solution I have is to load a earlier sets of Nvidia drivers when I want to play 2142 and if I want to run Crysis I have to install the lastest drivers, Crysis was/is preety wank so I stick to the earlier drivers. Anyway sounds like gfx probs to me mate go back a couple of revisions and see whats happens.
Try upping your page file a bit if it’s lower than 1024mb
The newest drivers are not always the best.

ParticipantCheers dudes.
Reinstalled Dx 9 – no help. I havent downloaded that large patch yet Insane – i was kind of working on the basis that the game should have still worked pre patch anyway.. and the fact it affects two games was suspicious. You are right though… its worth a try – I will try and get it.
I have tried two different revisions of my creative and ati drivers – no help.
I was especially suspicious of creative – seeing as every driver they have ever given me has been a buggy pile of shite… but its not clear cut in this instance.
I can play all my other games fine – bioshock/ World in crisis etc 🙁

ParticipantThanks for that – theres one suggestion there i havent tried – will give it a go. Failing that it looks like a complete reinstall is the only possibility! I hate f’ing PC’s!
Now…. if I do a complete reinstall… and I dont have broadband… is there anyway to avoid having to download all the microsoft hotfixes from the internet on reinstall? They must all be on the computer somewhere… but Im buggered if i can find a way to track them down so that i can save them and install them once i am all booted up again.

ParticipantMy last ditch efforts have failed… I even did a bios update last night as a final try.
Come on guys – help us out!

ParticipantHave you checked the memory on your laptop, using memtest86? You can download for free from http://www.memtest86.com/
A lot of people ran into problems with 2142 because it used uber amounts of memory – more than any previous games – and so encountered RAM defects which had previously gone unnoticed as that area of the ram chip hadn’t been used much. I imagine alot of the newer games are using more physical memory too.
Its a long shot but worth ruling out.

ParticipantI noticed that the error message could indicate a RAM problem wips – but kind of discounted it as a possibility given the fact my other games worked fine.
You are right though… these 2 games may be putting more pressure on the memory than the others so I was maybe a bit hasty to reject the idea. Will run memtest tonight!

Participantmem test gave the ram the all clear… I’m not sure if I should be happy or sad 🙁
so….. backing up service packs/hotfixes… possible?

KeymasterHave you tried reinstalling windows?
If you have, and I know it’s drastic, but is there a way to put all your shit onto a portable drive/dvd, then reformat?
