hey all..
I currently have a 7900gt, do you rekon a low priced (~£60) dx10 card like a Radeon HD2600Pro would be any good for crysis?
demo is out on friday so will give it a whirl on the 7900, but dont want to miss out on all the shiny stuff that comes with dx10.
October 24, 2007 at 1:54 pm #60862LammieParticipantPersonally, If you really want to get the best out of the game then you need a high spec fully compliant DX10 Card/Vista.
I have played this game on XP/DX9 with a very highend machine at i31 and it looked amazing.
With regards to HD2600pro not a bad card, but if you can afford it I would opt for the 8800 Nvidia.
This game absolutley hammers your hardware so unless your machine is reasonably upto date hardware wise you are going to struggle because this game really does raise the bar and is deliberately aimed at the High End market. This in itself is a shame given the hype an anticipation being generated.
This seems to be a strategy some developers/publishers are doing down at the moment to highlight the benefits of keeping on the bleeding edge of the hardware curve.
Whilst the majority of titles will cater for wider scatter of hardware requirements they are increasing looking to exploit the advantages of DX10 Hardware and software.
So whilst the card would probably run it OK on maybe low to medium settings and some of the eye candy turned off other hardware components maybe serve as a bottleneck and wouldn’t really do the game the justice it deserves. If you are fortunate enough to be on the high end of the hardware curve then this game will look awsome Crytek2 Engine.
From the Crytek persective this is always how they intended this game to be played at the bleeding edge, but obviously they have to cater for some degree of backward and DX9 compatabilty.

The rest of my system is…
Athlon XP 64bit X2 4200+
2gb DDR RAM (nothing stunning, probably all corsair value select, in dual channel)
errr.. HDD is nothing special. certainly not solid state or a raptor!! 😆… oh dear.. im gonna have to fork out on new kit already!! DOH!!
maybe ill just stick with what ive got for now as going for say faster ram would mean a new mobo (for ddr2 ram) and new processor..
Having said that an 8800GTS on OC is £180, so its not all THAT bad..
whats the current thinking on whether pci-e will remain the standard for graphics cards?… i.e. if i go the whole hog on a graphics card now (intending to upgrade the rest later) will the standard have changed by the time i get round to it?
(what am i talking about.. of course it will!!)cheers.
Chaos.October 24, 2007 at 2:11 pm #60864LammieParticipantPCi-E will be the preferred architecture for the time being mate, no doubt something else will come along in the next couple of years to supercede it but at the moment PCi-E is the industry standard.
October 24, 2007 at 3:25 pm #60865XDCiNSANEParticipantfuck me.. what you been eating today Lammie.. or has someone hacked your PC.. cant be Legit as the posts are making sense!
I was going to upgrade for Crysis.. but the whole alien bollocks and ghey alien weapons put me right off it.. I’ll wait for something else thats DX10 which will stay true to the cause

There are some Sci-Fi Weapons as you so eloquently put it but there are also amuch more of a range of more conventional and fully customisable weapons too.
With regards to the posts today? well it’s quiet at work at the moment and seeing I have almost 15yrs hardware background I knows a thing or three 😉
October 24, 2007 at 4:57 pm #60867XDCiNSANEParticipantI’ve had 17 years but I’m not as boring as you 🙂
ok how many levels are there before the ghey aliens come into it…

October 24, 2007 at 6:34 pm #60869XDCJuDgE-MenTaLParticipantWell here’s my $0.02c My mate just bought an ASUS Nvidia 8800 GTS 640 OC and I bought an ASUS ATI HD2900 XT and mine dicks the 8800 for less money…
check out the benchies for the new Unreal Tourney

cutting to the chase
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3128&p=4
simple math pricewise and see which is the better buy ???
When the HD 2900 XT (R600) came out it produced disapointing benchies (all beit on beta drivers) Now that ATI have sorted out the drivers for this card (fuck me it’s taken them a while too) it’s a force to be reckoned with for the money IMO. Paying the extra for the 8800 Ultra seems a bit pointless, but paying extra for the 8800 GTS is insanity 🙂 I read complaints about it being a ‘noisier’ card too. Apparently thats the ‘highpoint’ version I haven’t heard a peep out of the ASUS flavour.
There are many other factors apart from FPS that make a good GFX card but I think the ATI’s image quality is marginally better too. (Yea we did a comparison on Medal of Honor Airbourne and even my mate had to agree about the image quality even thought there’s fuck all in it really). Either card will do the job well and you won’t be disappointed with either so for me it came down to bang for buck because the BFG Ultra Nvidia was beyond reach for my budget.
Plus you get the Valve ‘Black Box’ (TF2 Half Life EP1 etc and Stalker with it :))
October 24, 2007 at 6:49 pm #60870XDCiNSANEParticipantyou been on the lammie feast today also 🙂
good review fella.. I’ll consider the ATi as i do like em.. but your changing me mind again.. esspecially where cost is involved
cheers
October 24, 2007 at 8:56 pm #60871RyzoParticipantGetting the BFG 8800 GTX 768 OC version for around 354 quid, and getting rid of my current 7950, got to keep up with the times
October 25, 2007 at 6:37 am #60872XDCiNSANEParticipantEither 2 much money and no sense or you just didnt read Judges post 🙂
£354 for an extra 6FPS.. bargain 😆
October 25, 2007 at 7:52 am #60873MugworthParticipantheh well the X1950XTX is not far off the Geforce 8800GTS 🙂 on that chart 🙂
October 25, 2007 at 8:15 am #60874Cha0sEngineParticipantta Judge…
i rekon the XT is way outta my budget for the time being…
but the “Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2900 Pro SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3”
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-160-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=922might not be.. and if you believe the reviewers posts it can be oc’d to perform like the XT.
I read a review of some of the budget cards (~£60) and theat mentioned that more ram seemed to be better than faster ram. These 2900’s seem to have 512mb ddr3 (so its more AND faster) which cant be bad.
Course.. you fall into the trap of… “if i spend just a little more….”
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-159-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=922
…. i get 1024mb DDR4!! whoot hooooottt… 😈 😈Insane… didnt you play Halo2?? killing aliens is the only way to fly!!
i mean.. reality is overrated. and the level editor that comes with it will be fookin nice too.. have you seen any of the vids that tell you about the technology and sheite.. (ok its all hype.. but nothing compared to they hype generated by xbox game launches)October 25, 2007 at 8:33 am #60875XDCiNSANEParticipantyeah played Halo2 and Halo 3.. both are toss 🙂
BF1942, BFV, BF2, Turok, SOF, Stranglehold, Max Payne, FH, CS, DOD, COD3, Red Orchestra.. nuff said mate regarding realism.. there where its at and always will be
I dont doubt Crysis will be good, I was gonna upgrade for that game alone.. the beginning levels look amazing.. but.. it got all ghey with the aliens and what not.. lazers dont do it for me .. unless in films.. in films they rock 🙂
