Elite Squad 2

I was trawling the net the other night looking for something new to watch, and came across this title on IMD. From the title it struck me as the sort of low brain power action flick, which I could just have on in the background, but I was curious why it had scored so highly (8 or so on IMD). I looked up the synopsis, and read about as far as “elite police squad, Rio de Janeiro”, and that was me sold, so I managed to get hold of a copy. Having number two in the title, made me look for the original first, but this was surprisingly difficult, so I settled for 2 and I’ve just watched it through this morning.

Now I don’t want to give too much away about this, but this is a gem of a movie. I’d like to know whether it’s a take on real life events, or whether it was a “what might happen” type film, but either way it was a great watch. It you want a comparison, it’s a bit like a cross between the Godfather and I suppose The Departed, along with maybe the political intrigue of the tv series The Wire.

The only “down” side is that it’s a Portuguese film and you have to put up with English subtitles, but really you couldn’t have English speaking actors perform as well as the cast of this did. If you liked City of Angels, this is as good, and just as with that, you’ll not realise you’re reading subtitles after a while (unless you watch the first half while you’re in bed and half asleep like me last night).

I looked up the wiki on it, and have just noticed it’s going to be in UK cinema’s next month, so put this down as a must see (although whether that means mainstream cinemas, I don’t know). It looks like it’ll be released here under the name “Elite Squad – The Enemy Within”.
