Hello all –
We know there is a lot of interest in the merges, so we want to keep you as up to date as possible. I’ll be positing here as we make more final decisions. Here’s what we know:
We’ll be merging the following servers:
Woodman + Miller
Ceres + Cobalt
This combo was determined by various factors, but the main goals were to prevent excessive queues while maintaining a robust server pop and extending prime playing hours
We’d like to run MergeSmashes similar to the one we did for the previous merge
We’d like to let the name be decided by the MergeSmash event (i.e. winner keeps the server name)
Here’s what’s left to be determined:
When the MergeSmashes will be
When the merges themselves will happen
I’m keeping this thread stickied and locked, and I’ll update it as more official decisions are made.

First of all, I can’t see it happening until after the Merger smashes which are scheduled for this weekend between Woodman and Miller, and two weeks later between Ceres and Cobalt. After that we have some decisions to make.
Firstly, lets try not and worry too much about 48+ meat grinders on each lattice lane, I’m hoping some of the base designs right now will accommodate them better and that hossin will absorb the majority of players, however they’ll definitely also change the limit of continent locks to 1 at these times (after today’s patch it’s already a dynamic system based on population), and that may still spread people around enough to facilitate our preferred types of fights. We’ll see how it goes though, but we shall also have the continent lattice and battle islands hopefully within the next few months to help spread things out a bit more, although tbh we’re probably as well not holding our breath on that one.
What we may want to consider though is how to use this to our advantage. Between Miller and Woodman TR, I can see the main Miller outfits absorbing a lot of players from the Woodman crap, in order to organise them better, so as far as our plan to make an XDC outfit on Woodman goes, I think that’s a non starter right now (although I want to see how things pan out initially). On Ceres and Cobalt though we may have more options. If we open XDC up for recruitment there we might be able to boost our numbers to a level which might permit an evolution in our current playstyle.
We’ve found a pretty good niche right now in that we can be extremely effective at delaying and even preventing base captures when badly outnumbered, but it’s incredibly difficult for us to do the same in attack. The reason for this is that a 4 or 5 man squad just can’t be everywhere at once when attacking a big base, and when you need that many people to lock down a flag on a smaller base, all it takes is one mistake and a loss of your sundy/beacon, and it’s all over. If we had 2 or 3 squads of the same size working together, we could a lot more when we need to. I’d love to see us able to keep our current squad setup, and size, where we’re working well as a close unit, and if we could find a few able randoms able to fit in with the style, we could become a real force without the need to become too zergy or resorting to simple macro management of 48 player platoons.
Anyway, given that a server merge between Ceres and Cobalt will also see some player movement, and the outfit recruitment tool was updated recently, this is probably an opportunity for us not to miss, but are we up for the work it would require? For example, we’ll have to get to know a ton of new people in probably a short period of time while trying to integrate them into our current style (which is a lot different from standard outfits), and we might end up having to mix current xdc members up with randoms to ensure the squads work right, if we’re ending up with too many people in one place.

The core of us that play are all getting pretty adept at spotting the kind of fight we like to play and with 2-3 squads, on a continent, we could almost ensure we never lost a lattice to anything but a big push. And even with that big push, if we pooled our 2-3 squads, we’d have at least 10-15 people actually trying to push out of spawn, hopefully encouraging the rest.
It could work and I’d be happy to lead a squad when I’m on, I tend to do it anyway when Matt and Alex aren’t about and it’s not bad finding decent fights. Don’t mind indoctrinating new people, so long as they understand how we operate and follow direction. No point in having a split squad across a continent that i see all the time in randoms. I guess it comes down to a well written recruitment piece.
