OK I managed to get a beta key today for both Ben and myself (thanks Queeks and Jar for the help with that), and got it downloaded this afternoon.
Now the game is huge and already strikes me has having a learning curve typical of most MMO’s, but even still we managed to get to grips with roughly what was going on and launched ourselves into the thick of some action. In terms of game mechanics it’s very similar to BF3, but because of the futuristic setting, there are elements of the game that won’t suit those of us who prefer a realistic feel in a game. I tend to judge a game more on it’s tactical depth though and in that PS2 is certainly on the same level as BF3. It’s also fair to say there are a lot similarities with TF2, particularly when it comes to the available classes in game, and the way each plays.
From what I’ve gathered so far the classes are Recon, Light Assault, Engy, Heavy Assault, Medic, and they even have a class called “MAX” 🙂 Right away I’m comparing these to the same classes in TF2 in how they play, with the likes of light assault representing scouts, heavy assault playing the all round soldier, and the MAX being similar to the Heavy. It’s not exactly the same obviously, with one difference being that each class has particular abilities such as a temporary cloak for the Recon (pretty much how it works for the spy in TF2), and a forcefield for the Heavy assault (which is what I’ve mostly been playing so far).
The guns are similar to BF3, with the same sort of recoil system, reload times, hip fire and ADS accuracy, and rocket launchers are comparable with SMAWs and RPGs in BF3, rather than how they play in TF2 or quake. Vehicles are also similar to BF3, but you see a lot more of them, both on the ground and in the air. I haven’t seen enough of vehicle combat yet to comment on it, other than it strikes me currently as being well balanced, and operating just like BF3.
The squad system is a bit different, in that you don’t spawn on squad mates (though we’re still getting to grips with how the spawn system works), so I’m unsure what the actual benefit is other than features such as inbuilt squad VOIP, squad waypoints you can set, and the ability to identify squad mates easily on the map and overview. With 12 man squads possible, it should be a lot easier to get together in this game than it is currently in BF3.
There are still a number of bugs in the game, and graphical glitches, but nothing that you wouldn’t expect from a beta, and nothing that takes away from the overall experience.
Overall I’m feeling quite positive about how this plays, and I’m looking forward to getting involved in some epic defences or attacks, which we only got a small glimpse of during an outpost attack this afternoon. There must’ve been 100 people involved in that particular incident, though it wasn’t too epic due to a weak defence, but even still it was some sight running across the plains into the fight. The base had a huge tower in the centre, surrounded by some smaller buildings around it’s edge, and our infantry were rushing it from all sides. Huge galaxy transports were orbiting the tower, guns blazing in support of the infantry, who were also being supported by a column of armour. With the enemy using all the turrets on the tower, there was tracer fire, and lasers darting across the whole scene, which reminded me of some of the land battles in star wars. Our infantry on the ground cleared the outlying buildings while the galaxy craft landed squads on the main tower’s roof, which proceed to clear it out floor by floor. An overwhelming victory on that sector of the map, but there’s always somewhere else where the fight’s swinging the other way. Good fun so far though 🙂
Anyone else interested in joining us btw?

September 1, 2012 at 10:25 pm #83473AlzirKeymasterpm’d you one, and sadly that’s all the keys I have used up now. Get that 30 meg line working tomorrow and I’ll join you for some action after the football tomorrow 🙂
September 2, 2012 at 1:40 pm #83474AlzirKeymasterPlayed a bit more of this into the wee small hours last night, with line and max, but it was a frustrating experience. We had squadded up but even then we found ourselves seperated a lot of the time. When we were together we had seemed to acquire the knack of either turning up to a fight when it had finished or running into and overwhelming force, so most of the night was spent running about and I finished up with doubts over how engaging the game will be.
That bwing said, I had much more fun this morning. I had a conversation with voo on steam before calling it a night and discovered he was playing this as well in the eu beta 03 server and he directed me to a stream showing some coordinated action which was pretty epic. What was happening isn’t really relevant other than to say that that is where the game is, so this morning I joined a random squad. Now the one I chose was rubbish but I tried to link up with some guys who were at least focusing on the fight and got myself into quite a hard column of armour on a wrecking mission across the map. We ran into a variety of defences, steamrolling a few, and hitting a brick wall against a few others, however the teamwork on display was much better than the night before. I think that going forward today we should get ourselves into a squad first, then make it public so as to grow our numbers then make an attempt to coordinate and attack or defence. This isn’t a game yet for small squads, or lonewolfing, but with more numbers we should start seeing the game’s potential.
September 14, 2012 at 7:35 pm #83475sickofitallParticipantI’ll be playing this when it comes out so if there is going to be an XDC squad running on it post up the server you’re on.
In the first game there were about 5 ways to capture a base so once you learned the basics one squad could make a big difference. So hopefully they’ve kept it similar.
September 14, 2012 at 7:46 pm #83476AlzirKeymasterSquad play is certainly the name of the game in the beta, but how you adapt to the mechanics, which are ridiculously similar to BF3, will determine how you enjoy the game.
If you’re in or get in beta, we’re on EU beta 1, playing NC, but for the full game I’ll let you know.
October 18, 2012 at 6:39 pm #83477RecoilUKParticipantHi guys

October 18, 2012 at 6:48 pm #83478AlzirKeymasterIt’s in beta steve, with release expected by the new year but the official date will be confirmed within the next week or so. If you have time to really give it a go and join us on ts, I can arrange a key for you.

October 18, 2012 at 9:32 pm #83482RecoilUKParticipantHey
Yeah downloaded team-speak on my Samsung S2, that works pretty good.
You weren’t on though, can you pm me the code?
From the videos, it doesn’t look a lot different from the original, did you play it?

October 19, 2012 at 10:23 am #83483AlzirKeymasterYea sorry mate, last night didn’t quite go to plan and I didn’t get on, but I will be on tonight and will be on for several sessions of bf3 and ps2 over what will be a long weekend for me. Keep an eye on your pm’s around lunchtime today as I’ll need to access my email to get the key for you, and you can hopefully then download it during the afternoon. If you plan on playing the game this afternoon note that the beta servers are not available 24/7, with them closed between 8am and 3pm BST during the working week. They’re available most hours over weekends though, if not all day.
I didn’t play the original but I’m pretty sure the gfx have been updated significantly since then, and they’ll likely have kept the same style. The beta hasn’t yet been fully optimised and you’ll find it very CPU intensive, which means most of us play on low gfx settings. This could be why they don’t look great on video, but youtube also reduces quality quite significantly. It’s certainly not BF3 standard gfx though, but then you’d expect that with them having to manage a much larger environment in PS2.
October 19, 2012 at 11:11 am #83484AlzirKeymasterEarlier lunch than I expected but you should have the key now. I also discovered another email from the devs dated 6th october with another key, in case anyone wants that.
October 19, 2012 at 12:18 pm #83485XDC SpaceParticipantHave you got a key for this? Like to try now that I’ve released this is FPS and not some dodgy WOW type game as first thought.
