Really enjoying my smart new pc and the joys of BF3 , but was surprised that friendly fire was off and just wondered what peoples thoughts are on this?

A bit of a meh for me tbh. While i love the idea of ff on because it will stop all the rpg spam, i would not like it on because on times i see my screen red or white (torches/infra-red beam) and i open fire, also sometimes people run round the corner on you and natural instinct is to fire.
Then you have the age old thing with ea that mines will probably cause ff also and people will just run over them regardless.While i love the idea of ff being on i also think it will cause more frustration than good.
I’ve had a few games now on hardcore servers where this is on, and I’ve experienced nothing but frustration with it. My experience hasn’t been less RPG spam, or less mortar activity, though you’d think that’d be the case. In effect the rockets and mortars are actually more powerful, and even if you pick up the occasional TK, the hardcore damage settings mean you die if a rocket even looks at you. I also obviously try and avoid TK’s when playing with FF on, but even with normal weapons they’re just unavoidable, and they’re so frequent that I’ve actually given up typing “sry” now.
It’d be interesting to see what FF would be like on a normal damage server, but the problem with that at the moment is that by turning FF on, we drop onto the custom server list and it becomes very difficult to populate the server. I’m keeping a close eye on the Rackage forums regarding this in the hope EA adjust how servers are listed, but atm it appears to be that any middle ground between normal and full hard core = empty server.
Personally, I think its a good thing. My only gripe with BF3 so far is, it’s a little “quake-y”, lots of noob toobin’, bunny hopping etc.. I think this game is about realism, and sorry, but if your hit point blank by a high explosive shell from armour your going down like a sack o’ shite end of. I think it would make the game much more tactical, tense, and ultimately lengthen the interest if FF was on. Now, I’m not suggesting hardcore, but when I play on other servers I tend to go for the hardcore ones. There is granted more sniping, but less frantic running around with RPG’s which I hate.

Sorry Matt, but I disagree. I played Bazaar on HC, 30 odd players, and it was fucking amazing, much more creeping round the tight streets, and quite jumpy. But I suppose its what floats your boat. I think that on that particular map, the constant RPG battles at Flag B just get tiresome after a few rounds.
Generally speaking though its how you play the game will ultimately dictate how you like the server you play on to be setup. I remember it didn’t take long for us to change to HC on BFBC Vietnam, and the server was well populated. As ever this is just my own preference, and happy to play and pay for what ever the majority are cool with. 🙂
I’m talking specifically about FF, not hardcore settings overall.
I played RS remember, so I’m well aware of the thrill when you can potentially die to one or two shots. I prefer BF games to play along the same lines as BF42 though, but I’m sure we’ll have a HC discussion as well at some point.

If that is not popular though… i think it is crazy that we have FF off. Take the point re populating server… but once we have that sorted – get it off!!
I would also like to go hardcore at some point. FF Im not too fussed either way on. I realise the settings are the way they are as we’re looking to keep the server populated however we’re starting to pick up a lot of regulars so we may even get away with it in a week or two once we’ve consolidated ourselves as a popular server.

That’s got nothing to do with it. Try vanilla game, then decide what needs improved.
Would it be possible to have a hardcore night (ohhh Matron!) maybe just one day a week ?
I dont know how easy it is to do on a one night basis with regard to the server admin program.

Should be done on a weekend night when most are on so it has a proper chance tbh. Fridays sound bloody great to me because i work until 12 pm 😀
Only great if you like it messy, and I’d vote against a friday or weekend night, as that’s when I have most game time and I honestly detest hardcore. I can live with finding a random server or occasional games on a Monday but I suggest trying it first then having a month long discussion about setting it up as a regular thing or setting the server on hardcore more often.
Very easy to setup CC btw, just click hardcore on the admin program and restart server (may not even need a restart).
