Hey guys
I have just bought and installed an ATi Radeon X1950XT 256MB AGP gfx card by GeCube.
I am wondering about its performance
Basically this card has gpu speed of 648mhz and 702mhz(1404mhz) ram
Now I have run 3d mark 03 on it and I only got 9896 3d marks 🙁
By contrast my old Radeon 9800 128MB agp gfx card got 4889 3d marks.
My friend who has a similarly speced machine got 10356 3d marks for his GeForce 6800GT 258MB gfx agp.
Now I am right in saying that my new card is meant to go against the 7000 series and not the 6000?
Also I saw others with this card posting like 18,000 – 19,000 3d marks on 3d mark 03!. so something is not working right here.
My pc is
P4 3ghz 800mhz fsb
1.5GB DDR 333mhz ram
Ati Radeon X1950XT 256MB agp
on board sound
120GB ATA133 7200rpm HDD
600 watt psu with 30amps on the 12v rail
Catylist 7.10 driversgfx card is connected by 6 pin pci-e power connector plus 1 hdd connector as it has a crazy big heatsink duel fan thingy on it lol
Another note is that the catalyst driver says my card is at 38’c and this is straight after running a 3d game. The other gfuys were all talking about it running more like 65 – 75 ‘c under load?
It also runs a slower clock of 500mhz gpu and 600mhz(1200mhz) ram speed when not in a 3d game. may be its not ramping up the speed when in 3d mode?
Any ideas? I just expected this card to be a bit more than just twice as fast as my ageing Radeon 9800 lol
October 23, 2007 at 6:46 pm #60803SeedubsParticipantRough guide comparison here:
October 23, 2007 at 8:47 pm #60804MugworthParticipantWell that just confirms something is not right.
GF6800GT on that 1st chart shows 30fps and the X1950XT shows 71fps. so it should be miles faster!!
I am going to uninstall the catylst 7.10 drivers and install the ones that came with the card and see if that helps. noticed this before sometimes with cards and had it for a while with my old radeon 9800 and had to go back a few versions to get the full speed as the new drivers broke the old gfx cards lol. stupid ati. mind the X1950XT is not exactly ancient is it??
October 23, 2007 at 9:08 pm #60805XDCiNSANEParticipantI could be mistaken.. but I’m sure the 6800’s were against the 1900.. either that or I know compaired to 2 x 6800’s in SLI mode the single 1900XTX was quicker.. I think the 7000 series came after the 1900 series
thinking back they were.. Mas had a 6800 and i got my 1900 after him but 7000’s wernt around then from what I remember
that all said.. the 1900 still owns the 7000 series so its all good 🙂
October 23, 2007 at 9:30 pm #60806TurksMeisterParticipantIs there a way of telling what the limit a PSU can take is? I need new graphics and RAM but dont want to find I need more oomph too… At the moment I cant even play videos without major lag… cant even find XP drivers for my ATI Rage 128 Pro (32mb!)
October 23, 2007 at 9:35 pm #60807dodgeParticipantIve had to roll back my drivers. Was having problems with the 7.10.
October 23, 2007 at 9:58 pm #60808MugworthParticipantOk well I have uninstalled the 7.10 drivers and installed the ones that came with the card.
I have also downloaded 3d mark 06 and run it
Now this ran with 4x aa and 8x af at 1280×1024 as per the charts in toms hardware.
I got 1491 for SM 2.0 score with an overall score of 3357. There is one other system on 3d mark 06 lol which is running a P4 3.2ghz with DDR2 ram against my P4 3ghz with DDR333 ram. his score is 2248 for SM 2.0 and 4919 overall.
So I am losing out somewhere it seems.

October 23, 2007 at 10:19 pm #60810xdc magickerParticipantsomething is wrong – get 3dmark latest – run tests and use the online comparison tool to see what others are getting with the same system you have
1950XT were top of ati range till the new cards were released a few months back
October 23, 2007 at 10:50 pm #60811TurksMeisterParticipantOk… Sorry to yabber on, but my current card is so bloody slow, its doing my head in! Just to confirm – would an ati 1650 be faster than an ati 9800xt?
Or even better – is there somewher I can prchase a new fan for my 9800 xt?

October 24, 2007 at 6:56 am #60812XDCiNSANEParticipantget your own post or we’ll ignore you even more
sorry mate never heard of a 1650 card :/ it sounds poor.. but then again its recent.. and surely they wouldnt release a new range card thats slower than a 9800XT
Muggles.. I’ll run 3D ghey on my PC later if i remember and let you know what I get.. I dont normally give a toss about numbers, i just go by what settings the game plays at, and more often than not its schmooth, I’m on oldie single core too
Remind me in a PM later this eve or something

That was my own post – Noob! *Titter*
October 24, 2007 at 7:40 am #60814MugworthParticipantOk thanks insane.
Well yeah I agree with you, try playing the games and if all is smooth and ok then no problem. i am not a benchmarking person really.
But it seemed to be struggling so thats why i ran the benchmarking thing to find out if something was not right!
I need to run the 3d mark 03 test again i think, and possibly the AA and AF are on all the time by default it seems with this new card where as it was off previously on my old radeon and the gf6800gt tests which would have an impact on performance.
I checked online with 3d mark 06 and there is 1 other person with the same gfx and similar pc to me (but its updated m/b with socket 775 P4 not socket 478 P4 like mine and he has DDR2 ram, I dont)
I have uninstalled the 7.10 drivers and installed the ones that came with the card and got the below:
3d mark 06 score is 3451 for me and he got 4994.
Does anyone else have a gfx card which slows itself down during 2D and then runs at full speed during 3D? may be the card is not ramping the speed up?
October 24, 2007 at 7:46 am #60815LensmanParticipantMugs – It might be worth checking that you’ve got the full AGP bus speed. If your card can do 8x, for example, but your motherboard only supports 4x then that will throttle the transfer of data between main memory and card and kill your benchmark. Or maybe your motherboard can do 8x, but for some reason has been set to a lower speed.
Poke around the display information dialogs to dig this out, and maybe your BIOS settings too.
Worth a check anyway, just to rule it out.

Ignore the Saphire card the 2 HIS ones are better. The main difference is the amount of ram 256MB or 512MB. The 256MB version looks to be clocked higher also which will give a few more fps.
Apart from my current queries about performance, the card I got The X1950XT is better than the Pro version in that it has the same GPU as the X1950XTX (RX580 instead of RX570) and it has 48 pixel shaders over 36 and its clock speed is 648mhz over 590mhz and the ram runs at 1400mhz effective which is in the same region as the Pro. (probably becuase the use the same type of GDDR3 ram)
Now back to my questions!!
