http://ps2alerts.com/Alert/8860 – LOOK at that population disadvantage!

Many times you can overestimate your contribution to an event in PS2, and while you can’t discount the efforts of the 48+ Vanu squads on each lattice lane during this alert, this was one result that would not have happened without us! It was so hectic at the time and I was so keen to run off to watch the football afterwards that I’m not sure you guys actually realised how good an effort it was.

Every point along the line with NC was under pressure, so first of all it was a brilliant spot by Ben that this was open to attack, however I hesitated because attacking anything with 4 guys on Indar is often impossible, even without an alert there! Still, the accidental galaxy spawn worked in our favour, along with some gameplay which highlights exactly why I wish more XDC played this game. The 4 of us instinctively took up overlapping positions on each staircase in the building beside the crucial flag, covering each other as we were rushed by ever increasing numbers of NC. These were not random NC guys either, they were HIGH Battle Rank and amongst them was one of the best NC infantry players on the server ( https://www.planetside2.com/players/#!/5428039961790422817/), yet I was watching in awe as even Gary owned him as a level 4 or 5 sniper in CQC! I don’t know how you do that Gary 🙂

Ok we were overrun eventually but this was a proper “battlefield moment” because I first saw a random galaxy of TFDN (the VS zergfit) arrive just as we were being pushed off, and then out of the blue PADDY arrives in a galaxy and that allows us to drop back in, clear a building full of try hard NC (which was hectic as fuck!), and hold the flag long enough to cap it!

My only regret is that I didn’t clear my HD of PS2 videos before this session because, as awesome as all the recent sessions have been, these were some of my best moments in game (just because of what it meant, as well as some stupid killstreaks against the odds!). We won the alert when the territory control between TR and VS was apparently 38%, but I guess we added 0.5 to the score which tipped the balance 🙂

Anyway, XDC play battlefield for “BF moments” which occur once every few weeks in my experience…..I only really remember a few BF moments though and they are from years ago (including BF3)… My BF moments are running into an area and special forces style (aka Max) taking everyone out, then capping the flag, or doing something crucial to a win on ticket points. It happens often enough in BF to keep me active in BF games when I’m into it, but if you imagine the most extreme BF moments, that’s actually what I get every day in PS2.

Anyway, with next week’s patch, the move we made tonight would have a massive “XDC was here” on the map 🙂

I have to say, as someone who was never keen on PS2, for a long, long time, I’ve really taken to it in the last few weeks. Every time previously I’ve tried to like it, the gameflow and HUD has been far too confusing, I’ve never understood the base layouts and I’ve struggled to perform to anywhere near by BF standards of play. I especially remember the night that we got an 8 man XDC squad and that turned out to be a total bust as we just couldn’t find a fight worth fighting.

In the last week, I’ve really started to like the game. Im coming out of sessions with a KDR of around 2-3, which by Matt’s standards is poor but by my standards is pretty good. I also really feel like I’ve had a real impact on the factions territory control and this is as a 2 or 3 man squad.

The last fight last night was properly heroic. With you me and Gary on the ground, we killed at least 30 (think I got a 13 streak before there were too many targets to shoot at) NC before we went down to an actual zerg. They had to deploy around 5 times our numbers at least to dislodge us and the push we made alerted our faction who sent the cavelry once we had got a foothold. A few of the earlier fights would also have been lost if it hadn’t been for us pushing out a spawn camp to distract the enemy and allow the rest of our cowardly team to push out.

Yeah, really starting to like the game after being possibly one of it’s greatest critics. (unless this is alex reading this, then I actually still hate the game).

Hope we can drum up enough support for another XDC night as I think we can find better fights next time.

    It was pretty enjoyable.

The main issue I have with planetside is that you cant just try out different builds on the fly to suit your situation or mood because of the cert cost of the weapons.

    My ideal build?
Infiltrator with a rifle capable of 1 hit hill headshots at range
    Decent sidearm for close quarters.
Thats a 1250 cert investment as far as I can tell. Just for something that is basically a starting point in battlefield.

I can’t believe I’m finding myself in a position of defending PS2 already but I’m going to anyway.

If you were to take the £50 you spent on BF3/4 whatever and invested it in station cash, you could have that build and much more from day 1. Your setup would likely cost £7 or £8 if you wanted it.

I recently invested some real cash in the game. I got a 1 month “membership” for £9. It gives me +25% xp and 500 station cash. I used the station cash for a 1 week “heroic boost” that gives me an extra 50% xp on top of that. I then played a 5 hour session on Sunday and netted over 800 certs in 1 day.

I guess it’s a free to play game and it’s no worse than world of tanks.

Oh and there is a “VR place” I think, where you can test out all the gear in the game as well as small trial periods for each weapon you can use it in fights for free.

All valid points. Not at the point where I want to invest any money tbh. funny thing is, if planetside 2 wasn’t f2p i’d have probably bought it anyway. I guess I should just enjoy playing it for free.

Also, I just jumped on for a bit tonight and actually answered the starter questions rather then dismissing them and it gave me a bolt action so theres that. Max optic I can mount on it is a 4x but its still nice to have that option, was having some fun cqc sniping with it 🙂

Nice, I initially picked up some station cash to buy that £1.99 starter pack with the infil SMG in it. I also just realised that although I bought that 7 day boost, I didn’t activate it, so it’s not started yet. Could have had 1200 certs on Sunday if I’d activated it 🙁

There is, and you get to it via a continent console at a warp gate (down at the bottom – VR training). You can test out anything there for free, and you can also trial any weapon in live play for about 30 minutes I think per month. Luckily Gary seems to have found a gun via that newbie questionnaire because otherwise I’d be stuck for suggestions regarding sniper rifles.

    Decent sidearm for close quarters.

The beamer is the default Vanu side arm and tbh I really don’t know whether I prefer it over the two sidearms I’ve unlocked (commissioner and underboss – which are the most popular). There are others maybe worth trying out but when checking my internet numbers the other day, I was surprised that despite carrying the commissioner on almost almost all classes, on almost all my characters, for much longer, I still have more kills with the beamer. It may be that when I started playing PS2, I was that used to BF3 that switching to a secondary was much more instinctive than it is to me now, or maybe I’ve just got really bad at using pistols 🙂

I think I’ll check out the VR training to test some stuff. The weapon I got for free yesterday is the ghost which is the 250 cert rifle I thought was the cheapest bolt action but its not and the 4x scope really limits it. There is another at the bottom of the list called the XM98 which only costs 100 certs and can mount the high powered optics. Theres also the nyx which is a DMR style gun but that’s 750 certs.

As for sidearms, the beamer always seems lacking to me and doing some googling the general consensus is that its the worst starting pistol of the 3 factions. There are 3 that all look good but they’re 1000 certs each so i’m only going to be getting one for a long while, better make the right choice! Everyone seems to recommend the commissioner but I think I’d like the underboss better, seems like a magnum vs rex situation from BF3 and the rex was my favourite pistol there. There’s also the cerburus which seems to be more of a 1911 and can mount a silencer which might be handy.

    So my upgrade list is:
    XM98 – 100 certs (+ additional scopes if needed)
    Underboss 1000 certs
    Nyx 750 certs ( + additional scopes)

That would give me a weapons selection I’d be happy with but its a hell of a lot of certs to spend on just weapons.

Yea definitely try those sniper rifles out in VR before certing them out, that’s a pretty big investment. Pity you can’t gift certs to people because I have them coming out of my ears atm. 100 certs isn’t hard to get though, and since you’ve completed that newbie questionnaire, the next time you plan to be on for a session, remember to equip the 24 hour XP boost which you should also have got for free. With that you should be able to earn 50-100 certs per hour (or more), depending on how well you do.

I think I also got the ghost with a questionnaire when they first released that newbie thing, and like you I didn’t like it….but then I don’t really snipe so that probably doesn’t mean a lot. I do seem to be killed by it more than by other sniper rifles though.

Oh and one thing to maybe consider when unlocking the underboss is that if you unlock it with station cash, you’ll have it available on all characters on your account (i.e. NC, TR, etc). I was lucky enough to get it as part of a bundle for quite cheap a while back, along with the commissioner, and it’s always good to have it account wide.

The magnum vs rex comparison is spot on as well btw, it’s exactly like that, but don’t let PS2 public opinion put you off the beamer, it’s far better than many people make out. Like the masses though I personally never feel like I can use it properly (I just know it’s good from some players who’ve used it against me), so despite my stats saying it’s my best pistol, I tend to stick with the commissioner (I always opted for magnum in BF3, so naturally prefer it to the underboss).

btw Gary, the underboss is currently available via a steam sale bundle: http://store.steampowered.com/app/218241/

Along with other ps2 bundles like:

    http://store.steampowered.com/app/218240/

    and

http://store.steampowered.com/app/218242/ (includes commissioner and costs 79p)

Edit: A tip from the forums says:

Tip: When you buy bundle, click on “CD Key” and you’ll get a code to redeem the bundle.

I’ve not tried this, but the internet says so (only consider this if steam doesn’t recognise your account, or however it works having PS2 installed on steam).

Hmm that commissioner might be worth it for 79p

It is, 1000 cert grind saved for a little more than the cost of a can of coke. You don’t need to hate me Ben 🙂
