ParticipantHas anyone got one? are they any good? was just wondering what the minimum you can spend on one is? I already have a case, 2 hard drives with 100gb between them, and an audigy 2 sound card…
Was hoping to hardwire it to our router in the lounge, and then send any moving me or my flat mates download to it over the network, would that work?
We have also got a fucking enormous tv, but its pretty old (perhaps 5 to 10 years – came with the house)… are the plugs standard- think its got a scart…

ParticipantHello Turks
I used bits from an Old 1.3ghz Duron pc to buid a media pc 🙂
Got a book pc case for it, although you can buy a DVD player looking case if you like!
Fitted a massive HDD onto it and installed Windows XP Lite, (boots mega fast) and installed loads of different codecs.
Have a Mitsubushi Megaview 33″ presentation screen for my tv. It has BNC connections on the back of it. so got a VGA to BNC cable and get a nice big flicker free 1024×768 screen to read.
I also spend £35 on logitechs wireless keyboard and mouse which also has a remote control.
This also comes with their Media centre software to watch your videos, music and so on.
Very pleased with it.

ParticipantToo be honest young Turks, any PC can be used as a mdeia PC, it just depends on how much it can do. I’ve got an old AthlonXP PC wired up to my TV for playing MP3’s and watching divX movies. I plan to install a TV tuner card so that I can start recording stuff, but that’s a long way off at the moment.

Participanti use media portal but very cpu intensive,,,,absolutley great bit of kit…..record, pause tv, weather in ur area, tv guide (colour co ordinated), play ur mp3s, access ur mail….list goes on…lots and lots of user addons..
for a weaker cpu try gbpr same sorta thing just not as pretty…
make sure you dont put anything other on ur media centre…ie fresh install of xp and the necessary codecs.

ParticipantHi guys
I have an MCE Media Centre, its actually pretty good.
Got a Terratec 2400i Twin Tuner PCI-E card in it, so I can record and watch at the same time.
Got an A8N-VM CSM which is a pretty good mobo, and the onboard graphics are more than enough for Media Centre usage, but I use a NVidia 6800, coz I have one and still wanna play games.
Got any questions then give me a shout.

ParticipantI use an old P III 500 MHz with 200 mo ram a geforce 4400 and a small HDD then transfer my media thru router as well.. the CPU is slow but it s enough to play divx or DVDs or even surf the interweb from the sofa…
I used windows XP LSD (which is a very light version)
got the case painted in black and here you go……………plus it s even more quiet than my old philips DVD writer….
a great improvment for the living room!!

ParticipantThe thing for me with media centre pcs is that they cant be in those big cases lol.
Mine is a book pc so pretty much all is onboard. would be nice to be able to record from my sky box onto the pc though, buty i think i would need a card for it.
although i supose you can buy half height encoder/decoder cards to do this?
Its only a 1.3ghz AMD duron with 256MB ram and WinXP Lite on it. runs well fast. better than my gaming pc upstairs but it doesnt need to do much except play music and vids 🙂
